Have not posted in a long while and frankly not been able to do much forging as of late(ended up being able to get a lot of equipment, and as such needed to build a place to house it, and thanks to the weather took a few months) but made the time to make these steel lilies for a friend's funeral. Ended up having to shim the petals with copper wire due to not being able to get the stem riveted on tight. Not sure where I messed up on that but first time trying to make flowers to begin with. Still, learned a lot doing them.

With Valentine's Day right around the corner I would like to make my wife some long lasting roses. I've seen some beautiful roses made by Daswulf, 58er, and some others. What are some thing you do to make your roses stand out? I like the detail of the peaned peddles and textured stem. My current skill level isn't very high, but I'm always looking to try different things. I have never tried to make a flower or rose this this could be an epic fail, or should I say some really fancy scrap iron.

Show me things that move, mobiles, sculpture etc. First thought is wind chimes, or wind causing movement of certain elements.

My second tree shaped sheetmetal sculpture, (probably also second sculpture Ive ever done) made as gift. I work in auto restoration so we are constantly pitching replaced body panels, the cars are chemically stripped before we start metal work so the steel is perfectly clean, free of paint or rust, so this was once part of the quarter panel of a Dodge Polara convertable, sheared up into random shapes, hammer textured, roughly shaped and stitched together with a mig, picture fails to show surface detail entirely, texturing and mig welding is patterned together to create vines running up, I have 100' of led fairy lights inside so it has a remote control with multiple brig…

Out in the So. Cal. ( Anza Borrego ) there are a lot of metal art pieces done by some metal artist that are really unique. I put my dog with the pieces so you see how big they are. Between the spring bloom and the metal works it was a good drive

Finally got this big ol' scorpion together. Started with a large plate off some sort of shredding machine and added the rest. The legs are claw hammers with harrow spikes. The tail is a chain from a corn sheller and the sting is a file handle welded to a tow ball. The head is a thing used to carry cables on a high voltage power line - needed a lot of zinc removal. I decided to add the motorcycle chains as a texture for the body. It is finished with Rustmasters, but I'm thinking of a gloss black spray paint. It has quite a weight to it - definitely a two person lift. I put the spray paint can beside it for size comparison.

I have used a few stones in sculptures, but I thought I would try to make one that looked like a stone-curlew. We get these on our property all the time and they especially like wet weather when they dance around in the rain with tails up and necks outstretched like mad things. They like to freeze and squint their eyes at you if approached, hence the tank screw eye. Wanted to keep things as simple as possible. Head/neck is one half of multigrip pliers. Feet are a bit exaggerated for stability. In retrospect I should have welded a big blob at the bend in the legs, as stone-curlews are often referred to as thick-knees. They are quite endearing things, although the…

OK, forged or welded, whatever. I have tried forging frogs a couple of times with limited success. This one is an attempt at a green tree frog (big head, slender body) and the starting stock was an old railway fish plate bolt about 100mm long. The skirt on the head of the bolt is peened back and flattened, and the threaded section split to forge the back legs. Had to weld a bit of light rebar on for the stumpy front legs. This is a first try using the bolt; I can see where it needs improvement and I think I can do better next time. Anyone else given it a go?

Heres a couple of pics of my second dogs head I made out of a track pin. The first I made, as much as it looks like my dog (bit rough though he's a short haired pointer) did not work out on the camera. This was actually going to be a bulls head, the horns turned out to be its jowls, but as I have learned (am learnign) funny thing about heated iron push it one way it goes another (should of listened to my ceramics teacher) anyway my friend has a boxer so maybe a nice gift for het to place in her pot plant prior to her boxer digging it up cheers.

I came across a few bits of scrap which suggested an owl. We don't have horned owls in Australia, but I gave it horns anyway. The owl sits on a 1" diameter wrought iron bolt bent in the forge. I like the rough layered texture of wrought and it almost has a tree bark look. The feet are the claws of two hammers and the wings are some kind of blade with the marking Planet Jnr, USA. I have not sealed it yet but will probably give it a coat of Rustmasters or perhaps Rustoleum Clear.

There is no forging involved but here is an art piece I am working on. I typically make ideas that pop in my head and then end up entering them in art shows or competitions. We will see what happens with this one. From concept to partly finished. I still have to add one element and hours of sanding, polishing and painting. The cube and ball are stainless. The triangle is mild steel and will be painted. I also got really lucky today and had someone come over and commission/buy three pieces for over $1,000. I have to make two of them before Christmas so the next couple of weeks will be busy.
