I'm thinking that leather stitched on the holder parts to protect the guitar would add nicely to the look.

Yes. For sure. But beyond my ability. 

It doesnt have to be finely stitched. I have done it with just leather scraps cut to just fit around what I'm wrapping, a hole punch and leather cord laced through it with a square not at the end. 

 

You can also make leather pads and cement them on with contact cement. I did a gun rack with RR spikes that way and they have held fast for about ten years now. The pads could also be made from clear plastic tubing split length ways to slip over the arms, shouldn't detract from the great look.

That was my thought as well. The stand looks amazing, but I would have been afraid of damaging my guitar. Even just wrapping it with twine or just leather shoe laces should work and not look out of place. 

I ended up wrapping the stand with leather. 

Not the best job but acceptable.
