After this we start to see blacksmiths turning to other professions on a more regular basis as the writing on the wall was becoming clearer.. Gen 1 is a forged wrought iron anvil with a steel plate Gen 2 is the start of the Rhino horn and these are the ones that are forged out of Crucible cast steel top to bottom but have wrought iron feet welded on at the waist.. I purchased this from another member on this site. Anyone have any additional information. I cannot seem to find any Trenton anvils with this badge. It is a 200+ # and in really great condition. Has a few small chips along the edges. To me that would add character so in my opinion I would not belt sand the them out? Any additional information you experts can tell me. I think someone on this site said it is from 1939 or 1940.

I’m in the market for a 60-75lb anvil for museum outreach demos and I’m eyes these 2. They look almost identical except for their numbers, and the side on which they are stamped. Anyone know what the difference is between them? The darker one has a nicer looking face, which is my preference of the 2. The other is covered in chisel marks. I was considering a pig anvil because I love the look of them, but the idea of having to custom make and bend all its hardy tools to fit the curved hardy hole doesn’t impress me at the moment. Maybe in the future when I have a better skill set. Also, does this brand have hardened steel faces? Should I worry about easily denting…

Hi All, I have just found this anvil on our family farm and wondering if anyone can give me some information. How old? How common? Worth$? And any other interesting info.My Great grandfather was a saddler and blacksmith and grandfather was a saddler, so we suspect we know where it came from. Cheers Mick

An anvil just went up for sale near me and oh how the anvil envy Has set it. I don’t need it and won’t buy it because I have a 150lb Henry wright but it is a beauty. 490lb peter wright in pretty darn good shape for 3000$

Hello-Im very new to blacksmithing. I bought this Trenton anvil. I see the Z and 153 was told its maker and weight. On the other base across from that stamp is a visible "A" but then strange markings with maybe 3 digits. Any ideas about when it was made or about the scrambled ID? Any help is greatly appreciated.

This is an Anvil of my fiancés grandfathers his thinking. It does have a Trenton name inside a sideways diamond.(best way to describe it) the picture is the numbers on the foot.. when I darkened the picture you can make out the letter “a” before the 152 or 158.Other number looks like a worn out A86695 Could anyone help with information about this anvil? Would be greatly appreciated!

So this is my first post. I've read stuff from this website. Just finally decided to make my own account. So I was checking out some anvils a guy had. When I got there I had never seen so many 500+ pounders in my life. None of them were for sale of course except the arm and hammer. He was 4 grams for this thing. The brand is still visible. So is the serial number ect. The anvil was produced around the time of world war 2. When they were welding the waists. The only other arm and hammer i have found that was close to this big was a #527. (Found reading different forums on this website) and I fell in love with it. But 4 grand seems so steep. Opinions?

I recently picked up a armitage mouse hole anvil, a blowhorn stake, and a pair of tongs for $150.00. The anvil is in rough shape but its perfect for newbie with five hours of blacksmithing experience.

After a long while of searching the internet, facebook groups etc... i have finally came across an anvil, 300 USD for it, it is a peter wright so i take it to school and wire brush all the rust off (1hr and 30min later) and i coat it in a linseed oil to protect from rust (boiled linseed oil) but here’s the thing there are so many dents on this anvil and I’m not sure if taking a flap disk to take them out would ruin the temper please help me with my problem, there is a little sway in it I’d say about 1/8? My neighbor is now willing to let go of her late husbands anvil after seeing how I appreciate his wood working tools. It is clearly cast so I tapped a small cross peen laying nearby and it seems fairly dead. So I'm guessing cast iron but could sitting on dirt hide something? After brushing the waist I could read made in sweden. To the left of that there might be something but I can't make it out. Any idea what I might be looking at? She said to make an offer.

Hi all. This being my first post, please be gentle I bought the pictured anvil as a Bradford and Kendall 314lb from a yard sale in Ipswich QLD. Which is about 2 hours drive inland from Brisbane. Went there to buy an old dining table. After looking through some old post on the BK anvils I am thinking mine is not as the only markings are the weight stamps and it has no lugs. What do you guys think? It is a great anvil either way and the rebound is around 75% with a nice quiet ring.

I bought this anvil recently and even though it was a little over $3.50 a pound, I couldn't pass it up. It's in relatively good condition with good ring with no dead spots and almost 100% bounce using a 1.5" steel ball bearing from 12". Does anyone have any idea who may have manufactured this beauty or any info that might help me identify it. The guy I bought it from got it from an estate auction several years ago and was told it was 385lbs, but I haven't verified it. It's 35" long x 14" tall. It's ok to tell me if I took a bath on it, but the deal is done and I'm putting it to good use :-) Thanks Deke

Hi all, I just came across and bought an Arm and Hammer anvil. I'm a major noob but from reading what people are saying about this brand, I'm pretty excited. The serial number stamped on the foot is 37117. Would anyone know roughly when it might have been made? (I don't have the AIA book) It is also stamped with "99" under the logo; is that a reference to the weight? The seller said it was around 100 lbs. Thanks in advance!

I have bought many anvils over the years and sometimes whole shops just for one or two specific tool. I had a habit of also obtaining mini anvils in the process and kept them. Would love to see everyone’s collections. I assume since they don’t serve much use being so small I won’t get too much grief for not using them.

I was asked to identify this anvil and I’m stumped. Only info I have is there are no markings and it’s an anvil. Looks German to me. I’m wondering if this is a specialty anvil with that half round there because it doesn’t appear dovetailed like some anvils i could be wrong though. thanks

So I got ahold of this anvil from my friends at the farm, and they let me borrow it. I dont know what brand it is, I was thinking one of the Fisher varieties. It has some sort of red coat underneath the rust, I dont know if that has to do with anything. It has a big chunk taken out of one of the edges and the step is all beat up, but other than that the rebound is good and has a nice ring to it. I would like some help figuring out the brand name. I forgot to mention it weighs around 100 pounds.

I got a new new anvil!! Not only in this Cliff Carroll wide face anvil new to me, it's brand new in general. First impressions as I wait to build a stand for it, I do like it. I wanted a movable and new anvil as I think used anvils are kind of expensive and I'm just starting out. The Cliff Carroll wide face anvil has sharp edges on the main face that I will leave in for a bit to see what I think of that. I do like how the heel of the anvil has a slightly increasing radius from the factory on it. It is a Farrier anvil, so it does have a clip horn on it. Hello all, and thank you in advance for your help ... I acquired this anvil a couple years ago for a $ 100 bill, and it has since been parked in a corner of our welding shop. Finally had time to clean it up a little and would like your opinions as to its provenance. it is approximately 32" long, 13.5" high, 5.5" wide table, tips the scale at 306.5 lbs cannot see any obvious line between the body and table. Looked everywhere and the only markings to be found are a 2-7, first number being very difficult to read ; it could be a 3, an 8 , a 2 .... due to its actual weight of 306 lbs, I assume it is a 2 which would make it a 2-2-7 or 287…

You actually WANT me to talk MORE about my Soderfors Glenn? You be a glutton man. <grin> It's a 125lb Soderfors Sorceress #5, made in 1933. It's cast Swedish steel and will blunt a cold chisel without a mark. The edges are susceptible to chipping though it only has a few. The face is almost shiny smooth. It's the finest anvil I've ever used, bar none. What I know about it's history is hearsay from the guy I bought it from. He said he got it from the fellow who taught him farrier work and that fellow's father brought it from Sweden when they emigrated. My BIL just loaned me an anvil that he got in a house purchase. Best I can tell, It’s a 215 pound Hay Budden. Serial number is 191104. Can someone verify what year it was made? It’s also got several other numbers on it as well. The first one stamped on the heal. 105. I assumed that was the weight, but when I picked it up, I thought that “that’s the heaviest 105 pounds that I ever picked up!”. I did find 215 stamped under Brooklyn. To the far right side of the serial number, is stamped the number 2. Under the horn-the number 3 is stamped. This is the first anvil I’ve used. Thanks,

Ok, experts newbie here that needs some advice. Just bought this Mouse Hole and Hardy Tools for $250. Been looking for 2 years and this one fell in my lap.
