Managed to get out in the shop and do some forging. I have this thing lately for wanting to making a leaf. It hasn't been going well so I went back to basics and got some modeling clay and practiced for about 45 min. The next leaf turned out much better. I think my problem how is hitting the leaf square with the hammer. I did one on the horn and it spread much better. Ah practice makes perfect I suppose.

Here are a few of my latest projects other than making tools. They are selfstanding flowers that many people seem to like. I made a Calla Lilly, a Day Lilly, and a Rose. I have to thank dish network for the metal I made the petals out of.

Hello everyone, Just finished up a table for a client in NYC. I agonized over a lot of the design elements and in doing so generated several unused parts that will work great for my next project: a display stuff for a clients gallery/show booth. Good thing, all the work has to be done by mid February in order to ship to Europe for a show he's doing in March! Happy New Year fellow smiths! John

How do you texture your branches? I was thinking of making a couple for our house. Our living room is kind of divided in two by a post/beam that runs through the middle. (Where we added on) This forms four corners, one on each end of the room, and one on either side of the post. I was thinking a branch for either side of the post and some scrolls on the ends. Anyway, I don't realy have a "texturing" tool. The only tool I have is a chizel and a splitter. Would it look textured enough with just the hammer, leaving the tapers less rounded than normall? Thoughts??? Thanks!!!

Thought you guys might want to see the sculputre I just completed. After about a month I stopped counting how much time I put into this. Rosa Mortis : The Bloom of Death are a pair of pillar style candle holders. The house the 4 elements in oppositional expanding directions. Those famaliar with my work know that I often create or recreate occult sculpture and antiquities. These candle holders are for a large steel altar. They're comprised of steel and copper. The rest is airbrushed and weathered. In hindsight I suppose I could have actually done brass as opposed to painting them gold. But the steel is much stronger. There are countless coats of color and high gloss…

Hi all, Just finished a bunch of display items for a NYC gallery's show next month in the Netherlands. I had less than 2 months to do everything (not all pictured here) and after several 70 hour weeks I am ready to rest! There are a pair of the cabinets as well as another shelf and a pedestal for a large At Nouveau pot he will be displaying. Now I get to relax a bit and get ready to go install all this stuff in three weeks! Cheers, John

Hello All, been a while since I posted anything... I made this shoe rack after getting tired of tripping over all the multitudes of shoes and boots in the hall. (I should have made it a lot bigger!!) I had originally thought of it as a bench to store shoes under, but a friend of mine made the wood top from Ash- when it came back from his the other day I was so pleased with the result, the woodwork totally sets it off, it seems more like a table.. I think more projects together will come in the future! It's not really one for the purists, it's arc welded together - I wanted to do it quickly rather than spend a lot of time on it as it's for my own house rather than a c…

These are first pictures of my work. I'm more a farrier than a blacksmith, but the first picture is a door handle in our bunkhouse, the second is actually a structural plate. Someone was renovating an old (pardon me -- historical) brick building for an art gallery and upscale apt when they discovered a place with the bricks bulging outward. The normal fix is a steel plate with a long threaded bolt run to a solid structural interior member. This man didn't want a plain square plate on his art studio so this was my solution - the first blacksmithing piece I actually sold. The third and fourth pictures are the door to my shop (a 1930's milk barn). When I told my better h…

The hammer comes from a "German picture" (sketch) that is around 300 years old. Any idea of what this style of hammer is called or used for?. Thanks for any help.

I thought I might give a rose another go, came out ok, just don't have the photography equipment and know how to do it justice. And I just finished a bent leg table for the front porch, 2 inch oak tongue and groove top.

Hey All, Howardz, my forging partner, wanted me to post these because his internet is busted. He's been making Russian Roses for valentine's day and came by with the (almost) finished bouquet yesterday. They still need sand blasting and finishing.

My son wanted me to help him make a rose to give to his best buddies grandmother. He did the cutting, texturing, and coloring. We heated the copper just before it melted then shoved it in the water to get the bright reds. Here is a link to the pics, maybe Glenn will post a pic to the thread, I got kicked out when I tried. I thought I would post a photo of a bacis fire set I recently made. I was wanting some feedback from you. If you think it looks like it should be thrown in the scrap bin, let me know. Some one wanted a bacis set and this is what they got. They seemed very happy with it. And a "thanks" to my daughter for all my photos:) Thanks

This is a jewelry tree I made for my little sister for Christmas. The trunk is made of 1" Solid sq. the branches are made of various sizes round stock. Shes probally a little too young to appriciate it now but hopefully she will in the future. Its textured with a wood grain tool that I made for the powerhammer.

This is the latest project made for the clients i did the schoolhouse railings for. The wood is polished and oiled seasoned oak, with forged steel supports beneath to give the impression that the cantilevered wood is floating.

Finally finished the Wife's Christmas gift! She got it a little late because I had other orders to get done before Christmas and just run out of time. She didn't mind getting it late though as she says anything that I make for her is a labour of love.Just thought I would share it with people here on the site as I have gotten some inspiration from so many others who have posted here. I have been working on this thing on and off for several weeks. It is made of recycled past projects and one of the spokes from an old manure spreader my father in law gave me a while back. Oh, if it was not apparent, it is a boot scraper.
