Here's one of the recent things I have made, on the last day of Mark Aspery's Fundamentals class back in October. I'm a newbie, but enthusiastic about it. :-) Texture on the petals is from cold-peening. The petals were forge-heated then formed with scroll tongs. A small collar (not visible in photo) is forge welded onto the stem to support the stem-as-rivet. Paste wax finish. The base I made after the fact... a chunk of 3/4" plate, chamfered and textured in the forge, with a hole in the top to hold the rose stem. I brushed it while warm with a brass brush, then paste wax to give it a cast bronze look. -Rick

Having had swine flu for the past 2 weeks i was quite surpised to actually get some work out! But as the clients were getting desparate and starting to shout louder i had to venture into the forge! I still have to punch the holes for the door knobs and paint the letter plate so will add them later. Anyway was glad to actually get into the forge and do something.

I have been wanting to do some sculpting using carbon arc. I have racked up several hundreds of hours using this process at work. I was wondering if anyone has tried this process in doing sculpture and if anyone has some suggestions on techniques. I have been really putting this experiment off just because of the expence of materials. I was thinking of using the carbon arc in the same sense as a stone carver uses a hammer and chisel. I believe it would give some very interesting texture from the puddling of metal. If anyone has any information or experience please let me know as I think this would be a great way to make some neat art!

I love pounding iron but there's just something about pouring molten metal that can't be beat! I got to digging through all o' the old photos and came across some from a few of the bronze pours I've done with Jim Hansen in his studio. Jimmy and I have been working together for 10+ years now and at 84 y/o, his enthusiasm and desire to create and expand on new work continues to amaze me!

One of two of my latest works. Working on this project proved to be a good refresher because I haven't done purely traditional blacksmithing work in a while. Also, this is a small version of a similar large-scale design of mine that will be created at an upcoming forge-in in Co. Roscommon, Ireland. I'm looking forward to it. Mostly made from flat steel lengths and a square section for support to base. 190cm tall and streches about 40cm The finished work has brass patina. The black and white and the blue sky photos are before patina. I'm always looking for critique, suggestions, comments, or questions so fire off :)

Bout 2 years ago, my neighbor, who is a concrete contractor, poured a 5' by 30' sidewalk for me at no charge. Been trying to figure out how to start paying him back. He recently built a 10' octogonal aviary for some morning doves that were given to his wife. I think this will be an appropriate start. No blacksmithing involved, but it is metal. About 4' tip to tail. They haven't seen it yet, and it still needs paint. What do you think?

This one of the two twin lamps made of wood/steel for a country restaurant. The lamps were made as close as we could to resemble the old west wagon wheels that I could only see on images found on internet. nelson.

This is a sign I just finished installing on Sunday. The uprights are 8 x 8 - 10 foot long The top log is a 12 x 12 - 12 foot long - it weighs over 500# All the log joints are mortise and tenon. The sign is free-hand cut from 10 gauge plate. The rim around is 1/4 inch by 3 inch strap. The sign is 6 foot tall and 7 foot across. There is right at 1,000# of concrete in each footing for each post. I drilled and set 1/2 inch bolts into the concrete to hold the posts. Now the kicker.....the lady of the house loves the sign....but doesn't like the location. I called yesterday evening to see what they think...and she wants to move the sign. Oh and did I mention …

A few months back I posted pics of my first attempt at tongs. They turned out pretty well, were functional, and I used them a little but they were built for a specific purpose..."art supplies" for a project I was working on...my "junk smith". The small pair is the smith's tongs in his left "hand" and the large pair I used for his left leg. In addition to the tongs , he's made up of wrenches, RR spikes, shovel head, horseshoes, misc farm junk, etc. The anvil is made from RR track and is "as found" (in other words, I didn't do anything to it)

I just finished this up today. I just winged this one as well. The base is made of 1" bar, the 'spindles' are 3/8" bar, and the top is 1/4" plate. I'll be sending it off to the fellow that sold me my big leg vice. He seemed really interested when I told him I was setting up a blacksmith shop. He went through a lot of hassle to ship me a 170 pound vice without charging any extra, so I'm trying to return the favour. Feedback welcome. Please be gentle as it's my 3rd piece Thank-you.

Hi Guys, Here's the latest bowl I have made, it's from 10mm (3/8") MS plate and is 160mm (6 1/4") dia. All hand beaten, sunken into a wooden block, then raised on a ball-stake. I donated it to be auctioned at a local festival to raise money for the bushfire recovery efforts. Hope you like it. Cheers, Paul
