I had fun with this one! The bowl is forged from 1/8" steel plate, freeformed on the anvil & a swage block. It is about 5" in diameter. The base is 4 pieces of 3/8" round, drawn & tapered then forge welded together. I 'bundled' the parts together using Brian Brazeals method- It makes for an INCREDIBLY easy forge weld. I am not sure if I am done with the bowl or not- I might do a light acid etch to clean it up a bit more before I clear coat it, but I kind of like the texture that it has now.

Hello all, I posted a number of my pieces for this show a while back. I'm back from Europe and thought I'd show folks how the booth looked. My client did quite well, the show was incredible. Hope we get back in! tefaf.com The highlight of the trip was seeing Horta's house/atelier in Bruxelles and Guimard's stuff (had already seen it, but it was still awesome) in Paris. It's been hard being back in the land of Wal-Marts and Applebee's! Luckilly I have plenty of work to keep me distracted... Bonne journ

After spending a day or so digging for foundations and pouring concrete, we chose a beautiful day to fit the gates. The client was delighted with them and is now eagerly awaiting his next set!.

This a steel table I made recently, the top was made of a 7 mm thick steel plate that had been laying around for over 15 years, so the rust nibbled in a nice pattern that appeared as I ground and polished the surface... Nelson.

This is a grill project that I made the beginning of this week. It is 34 inches long and 15 inches high. There is a long bar in a restaurant in town and the grill is to define a small section on the end for the waitresses and their computer. The grapevine is all forge welded then bent to fit into the frame (mortice and tenon frame). I tacked the vine into the frame using a mig on the 4 points that the wrapping goes around. The grapes were forged individually-I think 22 of them- then made into a bundle which I tacked with the mig so I could forge weld them at one time (I've done it before without tacking by just holding 2-4 together with tongs then welding, then taking sev…

I had a few small pieces of damascus I forged and formed them into tear drops for my sister to use making jewerly (the pieces are about the size of a dime). My problem is drilling a hole in them. I used a NEW 3/16" colbolt drill bit and it did not go through. I used cutting oil on the drill bit but after about 10 sec. it started to squeel and smoke. I did not heat treat the damascus after forging but did annealed it. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help. William

Well last week I got the coal forge together as noted in my last thread. After doing more tapers and twists I wanted to see what was involved in doing a horse head or dragon. Though I didn't really get either I sure learned a lot on my first try. This was 3/4 X 1 1/4 colled rolled. I am happy with it but I need to make a few more punches and chisels to get detail and I think a carving block to support it like is described on anvil-fire would help alot. It was very hard to keep it in line when punching and chiseling. Does everyone doing this use a carving block of some kind to put within the vise to hold it? Dick

Hi it seems roses are popular so I thought you might like to see this one I made for our lass for valentines. I dont have a gas torch and the flower could really have done with brazing on to the stem, but given that it just sits on the mantlepiece. I need to work on my hammer welding though I hate the way ground mig welds look.

As some of you might know I was commissioned to produce a wall sculpture for a very up market school. I wanted something the kids would enjoy so I made a moon out of 2" plate, 3 stars cast out of aluminiumn and a sun cast out of brass from a forged steel original. The school owner was absolutely delighted and asked me to see him in his school office at 12.30 today. Bemused I went along. There was a camera crew from China Central TV who filmed me and the work! So that can't be bad can it? I have plans for a comet and a planet in the future (if he will cough up). Once the stuff is installed on the wall I shall post some photos.

I have had good results making roses using 3 or 4 metal discs of 3mm about 60mm diameter. I drilled a 4 mm hole in the middle to enable me to screw the finished pieces together. Each disc is the cut into 5 secments roughly 72 degrees, leaving 5 mm from the base of the slot and the centre hole. I use a piece of wood and marked the points so I just needed to mark out each disc once. I have a metal cutting disc in an old saw bench which makes cutting the slots easy. I rounded an old ball peen hammer head and use it to spead the five segments into petals. I use a small plier to roll the edges and make the outside first, then reduce the next disc by pushing the centre into…

Hello All, It's been a while since I posted, moved house and had a long delay in getting broadband sorted at my new place. Here are some pics of work I've been doing- The gates I finished months ago but never posted a finished pic. Boxing Hares and Ear of Wheat went into a local exhibition, the Red Squirrel was supposed to join them, but is now living happily in my garden!

Hi there! I have never had anything to do with metalworking in the past and only wanted to forge blades when I began reading about forging etc. But my first project should be of a different kind because I wanted to make a special birthday present for my girlfriend. So my first try was a rose after I had everything I needed. I got an anvil from a retiring metal worker who closed down his shop. I got it really cheap (60 Euro for approximately 60 Kilos) and he never used it himself before so it was in good condition. I built a forge from materials I do not know how to translate in english and use a hair dryer that "can blow cold" for air supply. I also used a weld…
