Spent a couple of nights working in the shop. I have been making some pieces to donate to local charity auctions. The cross with the copper ring is for a fund raiser for the Nebraska Bowhunters Assocation. The other cross is for a Cystic Fibrosis fund raiser. The dragon fly is 50th birthday present for my wife's friend.

I made my first attempt at a forged rose out of Mark Aspery's excellent book, The fundamentals of Leaf work. I had some trouble with the forge weld at the base of the flower. It wouldn't seem to take. I hammered very lightly at a welding heat but to no avail. I think the 1/4 inch stock had some scale and wouldn't let a complete weld take place. Anyway here it is.http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=18779&stc=1&d=1258424256http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=18779&stc=1&d=1258424256http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=18778&stc=1&d=1258424256http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/at…

Here's an example of some of my experimenting. I took a 2" schedule 80 pipe and necked it down on a power hammer, teaching a student to make a candlestick holder. The result looked like the end of a scorpions tail...so I just kept going. With the remainder of the pipe I made the spider and Mig'ed on some hair. I mounted the two on a piece of Black Walnut about 50" long. I haven't finished yet. I want to forge a cactus with a copper flower on top to put in between the two. (I love insects and arachnids as sculptural forms...they're like little aliens all around us!!) So what do some of my fellow smiths think?

This is more of a machinist's subject but you gotta admire this kind of dedication to detail! All operational details function (flight control surfaces - cockpit controls etc.) and are manipulated by using tweezers. The fella's name is Young Park - a retired dentist who's been a model builder since he was a kid.

New to forum here and forging as well. I took a weekend course and this was the piece that started my new obsession...lol. (Never quite finished it, but one of these days.) After quite a long wait, my shop is now almost ready to go! This is a great forum and I'm looking forward to spending some time here. Paul

The leaf on the right was forged in four heats. Had to try the horse head under the Bradley, thinking about forging a large corse bolt into a fuller to use on the mane. All were forged from 1"x2".

These lower budget RFQ are great for someone trying to get their foot in the door. Could be an opportunity for some forged or fabricated metalwork. The City of Campbell is excited to announce a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) from artists interested in creating, fabricating and installing public artwork for the Stojanovich Family Park Project. The Stojanovich Family Park Project is a new proposed park in the City of Campbell within a high density residential area. The property is currently vacant and has never been developed, having been part of a fruit processing and drying facility supporting the City

First of all, let me apologize if this is in the wrong forum, or not appropriate to ask about here. I have poked around the internet, and really struck out in finding any info about this type of metalwork. My grandpa, who passed away many years ago, did several iron boat sculptures - a picture of one of them is attached here. The main boat structure appears to be wrought-iron, and the details are done with twisted wire that appears to be bronzed into place. The photographs don't show up very well, but it is a very detailed piece - this one is about 10" long. Some of the later models he did were larger and included floor stands, and tooled leather sails. I'm just c…

Here is a fence section I did for out in front of the house a bit over a year ago. It has weathered nicely and is almost ready for a linseed oil treatment. It was done to practice and help exercise my technique for tapering points and curling rat tails. I also practiced some twisting. The big letter "B" is for our last name. If I'm going to do more fence sections like this, it will be after I get my power hammer constructed. Spears.
