November 27, 20196 yr You're making me really miss my moms ham bean "soup" with dumplings. We called it ham popeye lol. Wasn't a pie just a thicker "stew" in a way. I think the ham bone in it was the secret. Haven't had it for years now. Maybe I need to beg for it lol. Atleast get the recipe.
November 27, 20196 yr Sorry Its Not ham and beans But I got a temporary mount tabbed for my leg vise. I am not sure where the permeant location will be so the saddle bolts to the plate and the plate bolts to brackets on the fab table. The wedge needs to be moved to the other side of the spring with it there I don't have as much push, so the vise doesn't open on its own more than 5 inches. But that is an easy fix.
November 27, 20196 yr Just about finished a new set of tongs today. Warm up was this leaf coat hanger and also fenced in my striking anvil so I can use the hardy. Had a spike through it holding it to the stump. This is much better. And I can flip it over to the sacrificial side when splitting.
November 27, 20196 yr Heat treated my latest project. Kept thinking it was gonna go sideways. First forge weld. First oil quench and temper. First cord wrap. Cut through some 1 1/2” vines one swing.
November 27, 20196 yr Good job on the projects. Old Crew, I'm not sure your table is stout enough to hold up to the vice Yesterday my wife asked me to make a gumbo with the left over turkey from thanksgiving. She always buys the biggest one she can find to make sure we have leftovers for gumbo.
November 27, 20196 yr Going to a fondue party later so I thought it'd be funny to make a fondue fork to bring.
November 27, 20196 yr A good fondue fork has rearward-facing barbs to keep the food from sliding off in the pot. Might want to modify it before you go to the party!
November 27, 20196 yr I made a full-size one for my 11th grade English teacher when we were studying Moby Dick.
November 27, 20196 yr I once made a crossbow and did a presentation on them for a Senior/graduate level course on Medieval Studies. Much more fun that writing a term paper and I already had the research to hand...
November 27, 20196 yr Railroad spike tongs mostly done yesterday, but mucked up the rivet. Finished them up today. Also started a spring Fuller. Needed to stop playing and start cooking for tomorrow. I hope y'all have much to be thankful for, and remember, life is uncertain, eat dessert first. Dave
November 28, 20196 yr Greetings Golfishunt, A pineapple twist on your spike would be fun . Looks like you are havin fun with your new equipment. Have a great holiday. FORGE ON AND MAKE BEAUTIFUL THINGS Jim
November 28, 20196 yr Got to use my new coal forge today made up a fire poker (twist isn't the best, because I still need to remount my vice) and some hooks.
November 28, 20196 yr Made a belt hook for my ax. Second forge weld I’ve done. Made for a nice sturdy hook and a stable belt hold.
November 28, 20196 yr Nice work everyone! Alas, I haven't done anything in the shop. I've been too busy being the "domestic goddess".
November 28, 20196 yr I received my EMI filter today, wired it into the shop LED fixture, flipped on the switch and ... the light came on. TADA!! (But the radio is still full of static.) Gonna try better quality LED's, they should arrive soon...or maybe I'll try and fix one of the myriad fluorescent fixtures lying around in disrepair. I'm packing up the new fixture and taking it back.
November 28, 20196 yr Ain't that the truth. Still cooking and it's raining cats and dogs. So much for clean floors! But I know lots of folks have snow and very bad weather. Everyone be careful if you have to get out in all this today
November 28, 20196 yr A little overcast and hovering around 40*, not to bad of day. Yesterday was winds around 50mph. I would like to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. Be safe and be merry to day.
November 29, 20196 yr Rather unusually, did a bit of goldsmithing in the shop today. More precisely, I sprained my ring finger (my big chop saw fell on me as I was moving it from its old casters to its new rolling base), and I had to cut off my wedding ring before the swelling cut off my circulation. (After, it must be noted, giving Lisa a heads-up that I was doing this. Didn’t want her to get the wrong idea.)
