Presses

Hydraulic presses, Fly presses, etc

  1. Started by MG-42,

Some where on the net I saw a hydraulic forging press that used 2 hydraulic pistons and built with an I-beam. Now that I have most of the material I can not the info anywhere. I have a 24" I-bean, hydraulic power system and the necessary hydraulic equipment. Any help would be appricated. thanks all.

Has anyone tryed welding pattern welded billets under a fly press? Does it work OK? Any tips or tricks to know about? I know the fly press is not the best choice for drawing out the billet, but it seems like it might be a good choice for the initial weld.

I'm following this fly press on an Australian auction site http://www.graysonline.com/lot/0009-57517/engineering-and-toolmaking/fly-press-single-post-approx-75mm-square-with-150mm-stroke-on-mobile-stand . It looks ok but appears to not have a checknut, is there a way around this?

Zeh & Hahnemann No. 10 I just got it up and running late today, didn't have much of a chance to use it, but it did give quite a wallop on some wood and aluminum stock I had. I made a few adjustments tightened some bolts and oiled it up good, also found under the bottom plate what seems to be a bolster of some kind. The bolster measures 7 3/4" in diameter and has a 1 1/4" straight hole through the center, and was not hardened. The top die holder is dove tailed and splits in half to receive a 2" pin in the center, pretty clever. I'm not sure if the contact wheel has the right material on it, leather seems to be too soft to take the abuse of the drive wheels, I would…

  6. I have been looking around at presses and I was wondering what would work well for slitting and drifting. There are lots of different types but what do you think will work best and what are some prices on them? Thanks in advance. -Andrew

how do i tell how much tonnage the popular flypresses at oldworlds anvils will generate? i need i think i need 50 tons. i have been working on a jack press that goes to 100 tons but it is way too slow. thank you

Hi all, I have been looking at hi-lo (two stage) pumps and have become confused of what size motor they require. Do you calculate motor by adding both sides of the pump together or only one side doing the most work? Looking at Batson he is giving lower HP compared to supply houses? Yours in confusion. To give you some idea of my dilema, a 8 gpm two stage pump stated as requiring a 5 hp motor to run. By Batson calculations the high pressure side runs at 1.6 gpm @ 3000psi needs 3hp the low pressure runs 4.6 gpm @ 900 psi needs 2.5hp. Batson has examples of 8gpm needing 3hp while the supply houses state that the larger (16gpm) need 13+ hp to run. I am restricted to u…

Greetings. I know, this topic is worthless without a picture, so, here it goes: I bought this flypress in the scrap yard. It cost me about 100 USD and I was not able to reduce the price. The guy was a tough negotiator! It weighs 100 kg and according to references that I saw in the website www.flypress.com for screw diameter, working height, and weights, it might be #2. I disassemble it completely to clean, and I intend to remove rust and repaint. The problem is that I looked inside the ram and I cannot understand how to remove it from the screw. Probably a die broke inside, probably someone played with a pipe and smashed it inside the ram, I do not know. Please guys,…

a year or two back i got a little press from the scrap at school, and today i managed to finaly get looking at it and i thought i would need to replace the screw. started to disassemble everything to take an assesment on any damage, once the grime and rust was loosen it turned very nice and the missing threads on the screw didnt bother it, greased everything up and re-assembled then started debating how i wanted to use it. i settled on making a holder that it can fit into and put a hardy shank on it then make another holder for mounting on a bench 320.JPG]

I have a Iron Store Giant C-frame power hammer that is missing almost all of its parts. I am considering converting it to a hydraulic press. My question is does anybody have any idea if it would handle the pressure forces without breaking the frame. Thanks for any thoughts or information.

I am building a 2 cylinder 50 ton forging press I have 2 5 inch x16 inch stroke cylinders and a 7.5hp motor I was going to use the 16gpm two stage pump or would it be better to just go with a single stage pump I am doing closed die forging in it. I need more speed the press that I am using now is too slow.

Dear all , I am about to start making a forging press and have a few questions about pressure transfer and how long pumps and systems take to build up pressure . I have looked in the Batson book and on the pages of this forum and am left with a few questions . I already have a working press .A mills 200tonne and it is a powerful tool but slow .It runs at just under 1/2 inch per second and slower return. It is a one way cylinder with spring return . I can happily use it to squash stuff and for a single forging action it is great. However its slow nature means that all the heat is drawn from the steel in that one operation . I want to make a faster H frame press, h…

  15. One thing people hate about using a fly press is that the ram will drift down by gravity if you let go. I see folks with their shoulder against the lever or they put a wedge or a block under the stop nut. Well, I got to thinking and looking at mine and decided I could counter-weight it. The end of the screw had a nice tapped hole so I put a little eye bolt in and attached a 3/16 aircraft cable. Ran this up to a little pulley directly above and then over to another pulley near the wall. After a little visegrip-CAD I found that it took about 110 to balance the ram. Now I can let go of the handle anywhere and it just stays there, cool. Of course there is never a free lun…

  16. Hi all, a friend pointed me to this fly press he saw an ad for in my area. All we know is that it's 6' tall, weighs a good 700 pounds...and that's about it. I'm going to check it out this week. at any rate, if this is a good press, the price is certainly right, and I'm going to buy it. here's a pic from the ad. what are your thoughts on this press? is it a known brand, or does it look to be of good quality? what sort of things should I be looking for, and checking over when I check it out? if it helps, I'll be using it for heavier gauged repousse, slitting, drifting, riveting, and tasks like that. (mostly hot) Thanks!

Just wondering if you guys could point me at something that would give me a clue as to what is involved in building a press (prints, drawings, whatever) and a rough approximation of what it would cost to build one. I'd like to have one for pattern welding, as my hammer arm is getting along in years, or more accurately, I am sick of trying to find a striker who can actually hit straight.

Got a question for the hydraulic gurus here. I'm only running 1500-2000 psi on my system (gear motor on a 12hp diesel) have pretty good flow. I have been looking for a 6" cylinder to replace the 4" in my H press. Well, I came up with another 4" cylinder, that has a bigger diameter ram, and is a fair bit longer. The 4" in the press has a 4" throw, this one has like 14". I could get the specs on them, the one in the press is pretty thick walled welded, should take higher pressure. SO, if I ran the fluid out of the ram side of the longed cyl, into the pressure side of the shorter one, I would increase the pressure there, right? Could also have a "double acton" press, with a …

today i was in berkley ca and spotted a flypress for sale at omega salvage, it seemed to be in working order. the tag sayd $475. it was on its side on a pallet so i could not make it move. it seemed to have about an 8 inch throw and maybe 14-16inches wide . it seemed to have fast threads ... at least 2 inches per turn. it had an H shape to it the whole unit was probobly 3 foot by 3foot with weights in the neiborhood of 8 lbs each. anyhow i thought i would pass the word along, as i do not have space or skill to use one

I finally got time to make some tooling for a flypress project. I had a new desk made for my wife and it needed drawer pulls. this is what I came up with. Took 5 heats for each pull and 3 for each bolt. Whole thing took 1 1/2 hours. PS I made 4 sets in 1 1/2 hours

I just finished up this hydraulic press with the help of Harold, who did all the welding. It is a 50 ton air-over hydraulic bottle jack. It is going to a jeweler in Seattle who will use it for coining. Harold did an awesome job welding it up. He's a little bit too modest, but I really think he can weld the crack of dawn. Harold and I have been discussing a tabletop forging version. A 50 ton is way too slow, but a 20 ton works really well. He's got one in the works at his shop using one of my frames. he's going to use a 30 ton Enerpac cylinder and we're making some accessories for it now. It ought to be pretty slick, especially for knife makers. Anyway, here is the vi…

I just bought a used Manley press that needs some work for $75 It's a 40 ton with an arbor press on the wing. It's missing the reservoir which I'll fab up and the winch mechanism. It looks like the winch was built into the bed cause there are large holes in the out side ends of the frame and there is a paw on the front that probable engaged a gear. There are no pulleys at the bottom of the frame and I'm not sure how the cables wre strung to lift both sides of the bed. any help here would be appreciated. Thanks Oscer

I have a chance to pick up a Vickers hydraulic power unit for $250. It has a 3 phase 5 hp motor running at 1730 rpm. the pump is a variable displacement piston ranging from 300 to 3000 psi. It is only 5gpm. Would it be too slow for a hydraulic forging press? I am shooting for a 15 to 30 ton press. This unit comes with a 5" or 6" x 18ish" cylinder (exterior dimensions). No exact specs on the cylinder but I could always get a different cylinder. Thanks!
