  2. Trinity Nuclear Test’s Fallout Reached 46 States, Canada and Mexico, Study Finds https://www.yahoo.com/news/trinity-nuclear-test-fallout-reached-173809344.html Makes me wonder how many of us have been exposed and affected. I was 3 years old when the tests were conducted. My parents moved us from Ohio to S. Florida 2 years after that and never told me why. So many of my friends and acquaintances, myself included, have developed cancer and other life threatening conditions with no explanation as to why. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sails.

Well for those of you that are watching the news and seeing a major hurricane about to wander up the east coast of the US, let me assure you that I will keep everyone posted as it progresses so long as we still have power. I live in Durants Neck, NC (google or acme mapper it) and chances are that it will pass right over me. I am one of a few blacksmiths that I know of in this corner of NC but just about 40 miles to the north there is the Tidewater Blacksmiths and a few other groups. We don't have to worry about the anvils blowing away, just the buildings or in my case trees that cover them moving to the next county. Since I work a lot on the Outter Banks (beach) I may be…

After talking with Glenn and assuring him of what I was trying to do, and he agreed, I've got permission to re-post this topic. Here is the story, in short. Just over a week ago, after weeks of heavy rain, a hillside about 50 miles north of me cut loose. It created a zone of devastation a mile wide and over a mile long. It wiped out a number of homes and small farms near the town of Oso. As of the last I've heard there are 25 known dead and 30 still missing and presumed dead. This area is well known to me, I've hiked and camped and hunted mushrooms there for many years. There are plenty of qualified and able people on hand to hunt for the missing, but I woul…

'Significant' slurry spill blackens Kanawha creek 100,000 gallons escapes Patriot Coal facility CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- More than 100,000 gallons of coal slurry poured into an eastern Kanawha County stream Tuesday in what officials were calling a "significant spill" from a Patriot Coal processing facility. Emergency officials and environmental inspectors said roughly six miles of Fields Creek had been blackened and that a smaller amount of the slurry made it into the Kanawha River near Chesapeake. "This has had significant, adverse environmental impact to Fields Creek and an unknown amount of impact to the Kanawha River," said Secretary Randy Huffman of the state…

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Emergency officials in Kanawha County are now urging residents not to use their water due to a chemical leak. The warning applies to people living in Boone, Kanawha, Lincoln, Putnam and Jackson counties. Do not drink, use, bathe with, cook with or do laundry with water from West Virginia American Water. The only thing that you can use it for at this time is to flush the toilet or for fire protection. It was unclear how much of the product (4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol) spilled, and how much the company has stored at the site. The company has approval to store up to a million pounds of the product. The Elk river then joins the Kanawha…

The severe tornado outbreak in Southern Indiana was very close to me but missed my home. About 15 miles north of me however is a path of death and destruction. schools full of kids hit, several towns flattened. BIG tornado, on the ground for maybe 90 miles, followed 20 minutes later by another. Saw on the radar and TV 5 confirmed on the ground at once. I was in KY at work, putting my folks in shelter and seeing them head what looked like right at my house. Big lump, as the cell phone towers went down and could not raise the family. but mine are OK. North, of me they need prayers.

FYI The 5.9 earthquake whose epicenter was reported in Mineral Va, is 4-1/2 hours drive time and 283 miles away from our location. The earthquake WAS NOT felt in downtown Big Chimney. We had no knowledge of the event till we heard about it on the news. Thank you to those that contacted us to see if we were ok.

Life goes on and so does the pain. I been feeling more listless than usual, just thought it was the summer heat, so I hauled my rear over to the doctor and he ran some tests or course, well that's his job. Now it seems to add to my intractable migraines, bad back ( from top to bottom), bad feet, bad knees and gout, I have swung over to the dark side of blood sugar, diabetes. Mind you now it is just over the line, A1C of 7.1, any thing over 7.0 is considered diabetes. He said it has been a steady increase for the last six years by about one half percent and now over the 7.0 mark. Now I get to change my whole diet and daily finger sticks, not to bad I guess. Just one more b…

Louisville, and S. Indiana got extreme rain this morning. My area is getting drowned in rain today. Louisville has severe flash flooding due to 6.5" in 75 minutes. And the second round is just now approaching from the north. It is predicted to maybe bring another 6.6 to 7.5" this afternoon. My house is safe up on a hill, but many have backflowing sewage and such rushing into basements. My drive is severely erroded, and the short road is impassable as of this morning due to flowing water. I may be stuck at work tonight.

We are ok for now, because of the newly (4 years ago) raised dikes. But the neighborhood is closed off from most of the rest of the world, because of those same dikes. Part of the solution for our past flooding issues for the water here include barricades that install across the roads to seal the dikes another 5 foot elevation. I may have sand bag duty today. The call has not come yet. Our area is at the junction of 3 rivers, and as such only one lane for traffic remains in/out of neighborhood, and its under a bit of water too. Good thing we have a jeep. Such is life in a flood plain.... update: we are close to the 24 1/2 foot mark, 15% of the city is under water…

I am still without power, and they project 2 to 6 days for power to be restored. Been out since Sunday about noon. A very good hearted guy at work took me to his house and loaned me his generator and power cord, and offered his truck to haul it 46+ miles. We strapped it on my 99 Cavilier, and off I went. We saved the food in the freezers, lost everything in the refrig. My ladies are getting pretty desperate for a hot shower, my plan is that I will enjoy a LONG LONG hot shower when I arrive Thursday at SOFA. I hate cold showers, but when you are chainsawing one has to clean up. Cold showers are sure a water saver I have 22 major trees down, but have clear acces down the d…

Tio Pick, Tom Stoval and I are going to see a whole lot of wind and rain over the weekend. I will check in when it's over or we have the power back on, which ever comes first.
