Darious
I'm in Calgary out of the way. I have a few relatives who had to evac. to Edmonton from there. A lot of people around here are effected by the Fires. Just waiting for the restoration projects to start. A lot of Us are wondering what will be left by the time all is done burning. Frosty
I've been following the fires and am REALLY glad to see lessons were learned fro the fires in the PAC NW Washington down to California last year. I've been seeing people evacuating without much having to be forced. Some folk are just grabbing the kids and pets getting in the car and going. We're looking at another bad fire hazard year here, it was really dry all winter as well as warm so everything is dry. There was a fire about 15 miles NW of us yesterday and Forestry, State and Borough FDs pulled the stops when it was still less than 15 acres. Nobody starts flying borate bombers for a 15 acre brush fire, HAH not after last year and not when the wind is blowing it towards black spruce forest. I'm not trying to diminish how BAD it is in Alberta right now, I'm putting in words with higher for them. I'm just saying everybody is on a hair trigger after the last two seasons and it looks like our Alberta neighbors learned from some hard lessons others underwent. Frosty The Lucky. Wayne
The wife has relatives out Ontario way, they were saying how the forestry fire fighting budget in Alberta got slashed this past year, grim stuff. Stay safe everyone.
Prevenge
It wasn't the first Alberta city to burn down in recent years unfortunately. Luckily nobody was killed. I returned home to BC years ago so not really close to those fires but the Alaska highway is now closed north of Fort St.John , BC due to the fires currently burning up there. Darious
As bad as it sounds I'm going to say it. There was no better city for the fire to happen to anywhere in Canada if one had to happen at all. Fort Mac is an entire city of Fire and emergency specialists. The entire city revolves around the Oil Sands so everyone who lives there has training in how to deal with potential emergencies. I could have been much worse had it been somewhere else. Still wish it had never happened at all.
Darious
Just to keep everyone a little more up to date: The fires are still spreading throughout northern Alberta. The Athabasca Oil Sands Project 5 KM south of Fort Mac has been evacuated as well. the winds are blowing the fire more southerly as well. There is also another wildfire that has started in North Western Alberta just east of the BC Border. Crews are trying to contain the fires. If anyone has any questions I am fairly close to where I can get lots of information. Just ask.
