Presses

Do any of you use hydraulic presses in your work? If you do, what do you use the most for tooling? I built my own press and have been building a few tools, but am interested to see what others are doing.

Does anybody know how many tons it would take to cold strike a silver six pence? Many thanks Ed

Trying to understand the differences.

She stands 6' tall 1' inside, 5" cylinder 5 horse motor with a 13.5 gpr pump. She squishes steel like crazy!!!!

I am totally new to this site and it looks like it has lots of great info. from a lot of expeirenced people. Anyway, I am thinking of building my own press like many others on here have. My first question is, What tonnage of a cyclinder should I get for it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi All, My denbeigh no3 press has been working great untill this morning. After drawing out billets 1" x 1/4" billets for 3 hours its starting to seize up! Oiled up the ram/triangular bit and no real difference. Took out the side leveling plate to see if anything is creating friction. Nothing there and the resistence is still there so I am assuming its in the screw? The screw goes up and down and I can't see anything that could be causing the resistance. Or how anything got in as there is a collar above the screw. Do I have to take the whole screw apart to clean out the screw box section? What else could be going on. I need to do a load more work in the next few …

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I need to know the approximate weight of a number 5 and 6 fly press. I just need to know if my small trailer will handle the weight or if i need to borrow a bigger one. Many thanks chaps.

I love my #6 C frame fly press and it sees a lot of use in my work. I've come to the conclusion that the #6 is about the maximum size for use by one person to operate manually on a regular basis. Although there is an amazingly large amount of force generated, it still is a hand operated tool and only so much power is available by arm strength alone. Is there a source for new or used motorized screw presses in the Western US ? I'm looking for one probably in the 50 to 100 ton range , single phase.

Hey folks, Well after being inspired by the different mini presses I have seen...(many thanks to Mr. Kelly and Mr. Toler ) I decided to just grab it and growl. I designed this one to be just a bit bigger and allow interchangeable dies. Used four uprights rather than two. A bit taller as well to accommodate other tooling such as cutters, punches, or drifts between the horizontal members. Just finished it up ...well, actually still need to mount two return springs between base and middle horizontal member. Also need to shape the drawing portion of the dies. Hello everyone, Here is a picture of my new Mini Press I built. I made a few mods to the other designs I have seen, but nothing major. I also have built a foot pedal for the bottle jack that is not seen here. So far it's cost me about $170, maybe less.... Can anyone tell me if an arbour press is any of any use in a blacksmiths shop or art blacksmith shop? There is one on ebay. If so, would it need to come with some sort of press fittings, shapes? Do you have one? What do you use it for? Allan's Workshop

A post from Grant a while back about fly press tooling got me thinking about this one. Thought some of you folks would like to see this. Made up this bottom tool to go with my ring turning insert for the fly press. Adjustable, bottom pins roll as you slide the workpiece along, a little easier, a little less marring of the stock. I plan on making different shaped bottom tools too, especially one set with a deep groove for bending flat stock the hard way. It clamps onto my big tooling plate that is currently not mounted to the press, but you get the idea.

parts so far Scored a 5" cylinder with a a 6" stroke and 1" shaft on ebay for $10 (usd), plus shipping. It has two 1/2" ports. Mac 4-way valve with 24v solenoid. Has cyl A and B outputs, input, and exhaust. All 1/2" ports. Ordered some surplus 1" linear bearings to run on some 1" shafting I already have. Got a bunch of 1/2" fittings in copper and brass (biggest expense so far). the plan Plumb 1/2" copper straight off the tank of my 2-stage 80 gal air compressor. It makes about 160 psi. I know black pipe would be better, but I'm trying to keep the cost down. Keep the air friction for the 20' run between the supply and valve to a minimum with wide bends. Shock mount…

There was some discussion a while ago about building a fly press or a machine that functions like a fly press. There were ideas about cams and/or cranks to accomplish this most of which were shot down. I had posted a question about alternative uses for a punch press for blacksmithing purposes to which many raised safety concerns. Then I had a revelation. Howdy fellows, I have finally got all the parts and pieces together to complete my press. Question #1) What type of switch do yo recomend for a 5 horse 220 motor? Question #2) Is there a simple layout plan for the hydraulics piping? Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I searched e-bay on a whim with Screw Press. Came up with four presses. One for around $750 only problem is the seller wants to ship with the stand which brings the weight to $650 or around 600 shipping. Other wise it might be a pretty good deal.

I've seen an number of Air over hydralic jacks around. Has anyone experimented with adapting one for forging? The reason I ask is that it seems like it might be intermediate between regular hydralic and and hand press like the excellent mini press described here.

Hi, I would like to know if the # of the flypress is the capacities in tons. I'm looking for a 8 tons flypress. Does it mean #8? and is it okay for forging hot mild steel? John_zXz

Hi, I was interested in buying a flypress, but I live in Canada and the only ones I saw were from USA and it will cost me too much on shipping. Then I saw this manual punch on Euroforgings.com The price is very affordable for my budget. It has a capacity of 20 tons and can punch 3/4" hole through 5/16" thick mild steel or 5/8" hole through 3/8" thick mild steel. I want to know if it is possible replace the punch or weld a plate to the punch to do flatenning, drawing out or bending hot iron like the tools we use on a flypress. The bottom die can be replaced by a thinner one. The usual size of stock I work with is 1/4"to 1" mild steel. Would it be enough powerful to forge…

Hey guys. I'm looking for some feedback from those of you that forge with hydraulic presses. What size cylinder and pump/motor do you use? How fast do you think the ram should move? What size steel can be forged using a 4"-6" cylinder? Thanks a lot.

I just dug this new toy up from a local scrap yard. It has been there for at least 25 years and probably a good deal more. It had several truck axles on top of it that I had to cut off. One of the axles was embedded in the middle of a full grown tree! If you look close you can see it in the first photo. It took 4 hours of pulling, cutting, and hoisting but I finally managed to get it out and the scrap yard guy gave it to me for $50. Not bad, if I can get it working. It weighs at least 230LB I would guesstimate and is in pretty good shape for being in a scrap yard for 25+ years. Can anyone tell me about this new toy and what the best way would be to go about cleaning it …
