Judson Yaggy
A post from Grant a while back about fly press tooling got me thinking about this one. Thought some of you folks would like to see this. Made up this bottom tool to go with my ring turning insert for the fly press. Adjustable, bottom pins roll as you slide the workpiece along, a little easier, a little less marring of the stock. I plan on making different shaped bottom tools too, especially one set with a deep groove for bending flat stock the hard way. It clamps onto my big tooling plate that is currently not mounted to the press, but you get the idea.
Nakedanvil - Grant Sarver
Nice! That design will work good but the other design will handle much more force. You could also make rollers with a large flat spot and they would hang correctly by gravity. Good ideas for other tooling. Keep us informed. Dick L.
Grant, I'm curious what the advantage of the flat spot is. I understand how they would hang flat side up by gravity but what is the difference flat spot or single line contact in this mount? regards, Dick
Nakedanvil - Grant Sarver
Dick: A small line of contact will dent the work, see this thread: http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f82/no-mar-low-stretch-bending-fixture-12890/
Dick L.
Thanks Grant, The reasoning is obvious now! regards, Dick
Nakedanvil - Grant Sarver
Dick: Yeah, what is not obvious at first glance is that we're not working with thin materials. The force required to bend thick materials often causes deforming if the tooling has insufficient surface.
