  1. Started by mkustom,

I picked up a 16gpm Barnes two stage pump and it has leaky seals. I can get the seal kit but am wondering if any of you have ever rebuilt a pump? I am not the best mechanic. Is this a big deal?

  6. Started by kbaknife,

I need a hydraulic press geek! I acquired all of the parts necessary for my press that included this Barnes pump. It seems Barnes was "absorbed" by the Haldex corporation and now the #s of the pumps dont' cross-reference. Does the "....16G" on this pump mean 16 GPM? Will a five horse 3450 rpm motor run this pump in tandem with a 5 inch cylinder? Just checking a few things.

  7. Started by kbaknife,

I just horse-traded for the materials to build a press, including the press frame. Everything here is in excellent working order, however, the cylinder is a 14" stroke and I need an 8/10 to accomodate my frame. The parts and frame I now have came from two different "directions" which is why the cylinder is too long. Anyone have the inclination or desire to trade? And I have a question, this Barnes pump has evloved into the Haldex and is now made in Sweden I think. Anyway, this model number no longer seems to be cross-referenced. The tag has ......-16G stamped on it. Think this means 16 GPM?

This my version of mini hydraulic press that was introduced to the forum by Ken Kelly. Thanks for sharing Ken. I didn't follow Ken's example exactly. I used what material I had around 2" angle for the uprights, and 8" channel for the base. It's not finished yet but thought I'd get everyone's opinions. More picture to come, as I make progress. Can't insert pictures so click to view Larry

So I have a good airhammer and am happy with that. I am looking into a more controlled approach for certain processes and it looks like a hydraulic would fill the need. It seems to me it would not be such an ordeal to put one together. I figure the reasons screw presses are popular are 1. no need for electricity, simple 2. Quiet 3. Good "feel" 4. Fast action Of the above, speed is the only real rub. I know a 2 speed press can be made, just not sure on the details. So what do you know? Thanks

Another version of the 20 ton bottle jack press. Decided to try an I beam version as i have worked on some full size heavy duty press made with huge I beams. I used a 6 inch I beam for the upright and 4 inch channel for the base. 2 piese of 4 inch channel are not strong enough and have some flex in them when under load. The beam seems to hold. The wood being crushed is 2x2 by 3 inch long pine. I have changed the upper bolts to 1/2 inch grade 8 and reinforced the base. The design requires the upper anvil to be movable on the beam for other uses. Your thoughts would welcome Take Care TJ

It's a foot operated press based on a flypress frame. Not very powerful but perhaps useful for veining and other fine detail work. The Denbigh Treadle, foot operated fly press on eBay, also, Engineering Tools, Industrial Tools, Business, Office Industrial (end time 26-Mar-09 20:07:07 GMT)

I recently acquired a Alva Allen 12 ton punch press for basically scrap price. It is in excellent condition with air clutch. I also have the pieces to mount punch and die sets to it as well as the punch and dies themselves. My question is what are some creative or alternative uses for these machines as far as blacksmithing is concerned. I understand the considerable safety concerns associated with these machines and that they are designed for cold work. I thought this might be a way to start a thread to exhange ideas on this subject. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

here are some dies that i made, and some rr spike that i roughed out. Converted log splitter to ram. I guess it took about 3 heats to do this, its a learning curve. and my arm doesn't hurt!

I have a drill press. It has a table which can be swung out of the way and also a base either of which can be used to place work on when drilling. A couple of years ago I bought a drill vice but never got round to unpacking it. I have now decided to fit the vice to the drill press. It seems to be stupid holding work by hand when I have got the correct tool! Question 1. Do I attach the vice to the base or to the table? Question 2. The base and the table each have slots cut to take a vice. These run from front to back. They don't mate up with any holes in the vice. The slots in the vice would allow for left and right movement. What should I do? I had thought about cut…

Kind of a nutty title, but what I am looking for is ideas for making an anvil for the bottom of my hydraulic log splitter for forming iron. I have seen some things using square tubing in tubing welding plates together and was wondering if anyone had some ideas on this. I am figuring its a ten ton press , so maybe 8" diameter? I am in the dark here on what is required, I will look for something that is already partly made. I will want to have it to take dies. thanks for any ideas and help in putting this together. kevin

  19. Started by Warren Nakkela,

Now try this on for size: I take this 30 ton powered hydraulic press and screw a punch into the end of the ram. The punch is of hot working steel shaped to the inside bore of the hole desired. The nose has a narrow chisel point transitioning into the oval/elliptical punch. There is a stripper plate over the work to strip out the punch. I would use Hofi's magic moly graphite dish soap lube. How wide should be the cutting edge? Smaller than the hole? By how much? Will 30 tons punch 1 1/2 inch steel? Yellow hot, of course. Best Wishes, Warren

Do they serve the same purpose? Does one have an advantage over the other? I assume the standard flypress doesn't have the size capabilities of the standard hammer. Has this been discussed somewhere before? Thanks

This was mentioned in the tenon thread recently and it is mentioned in the CBA Level III pdf as a tool to have. Does anyone have a picture of this? I'm not quite getting it from the description. Thanks!

All tooling has a 1 inch spiggot, a standard size for larger flypresses. So far I've made the bottom bolster, a set of fullering dies, a v bender and a punch which is fitted to a 1" to 19mm adaptor. I made the adaptor because I've got about 20kg of 19mm H13. Here I'm turning the spiggot for the top V block, it is an interference fit. The spiggot was left in the freezer for a few hours to shrink a wee bit and the block was heated to enlarge the hole. They're not coming apart again, ever. Here's some 19mm bar that I bent, I also flared one end into an angle shape. This may be useful for making gouges etc. I also punched a hole into a piece of 6mm steel. .

Ya, so I couldn't find a thread anywhere on here where The topic of Burns was brought up, and in the middle of swearing off one of my best, I thought it'd be kinda "cool" to hear some good ole' burn stories.. Personally I'm somewhat used to super heated gloves, burning slag, and speeding sparks, but every once in a while I get hit with a sweet one.. Today I did a dumb thing, and used the wrong tongs to hold my work in progress sen.. The yellow hot glob of metal flipped up and melted off my right hand pinky side palm.. kinda deep but I didn't feel it.. The scent and look of it was what was nasty..plus its starting to hurt now a little:rolleyes: alright guys, shoot!!

This is a link to a huge screw press recently listed on the Milwaukee, WI Craigslist. It is much bigger than the Hopkins #4 that I have, which weighs less than half of this press. photo click here Patrick
