I made this for my dad today. He has been grain farming since he was young, and I try to help around the farm when time permits, so I thought wheat would be suitable. It is made of 1/2" round stock, with old band saw blades for leaves and 1/4" X 1" bar for the base. It stands about 5' tall.

My friend has harassed me to make him something since I started blacksmithing a couple of years ago. He has just finished building a new house, so I thought this would make a decent housewarming gift. It is made entirely out of 1/4" round with a 1/4" plate for the base.

We are having quite the party tomorrow, and the Mrs. asked me to do some yard art to add to some I had previously done, she liked it and said I should post some pics, nothing special, parts and pieces fitted together for my muse, one she thought looked like Garfield the cat, so she painted it, one I thought looked like the evil Gremlin, in any event, here are some of them.

O.K. I was trying to make a skull, the first time, I saw it failing, cut my losses and left it like you saw in the everything else section. Two more try's and it turned into the skull you see here, the rest of it will have to wait until next week, when I hope to figure out the back of it, I would like to make it all one piece.

As usual, my ambition is preceding my ability. With that in mind- I have some furniture ideas I want to work with and one design is for ball and claw feet on a table. I have carved them in wood but that was so long ago, I forget how I did it.... Anyone know of a tutorial that I can struggle with? I'd like to use a Bronze ball with forged talons made out of one piece of bar. Here is a picture of a picture of the ones I did almost 30 years ago. I like the extreme offset of the ankle and would like to reproduce this in steel....

This is a sculpture forged this past weekend of stylized birds. The material is 2.5x1" and 3x1" mild steel. The ht of the birds is 44" and the fabricated base is 40". Joinery on the birds is tenon/rivets. The birds are finished w/black Guilders paste, and the base is painted black. Both are clear coated w/satin lacquer. John Emmerling Gearhart Ironwerks

Ever since I set up my meager shop a couple of years ago, my sister-in-law has been dropping not-so-subtle hints that she wants me to make something she can hang on her wall. I finished this for her today. The frame is 1" square tubing, the curvy 'stringers' are 1/4 X 1" bar, and the wavy elements on top are 1/8" aluminum plate. I tapped threads in the stringers and frame and fastened the aluminum with stainless allan-headed bolts. The frame measures roughly 4' by 20". I took a flap disc to the steel and a scotchbrite disc to the aluminum to give it a little bit of a distressed look, then I clear coated everything. I kind of winged it with no plans in place.…

Hello All, Been a while since I've posted up anything on here, but thought I'd put up a pic of a Stargazer Lily I did a while ago that came back from the galvanizers recently. I took advantage of the lovely snowy but sunny weather to take some pics! Flower is forged from 1mm sheet and stands 160cm tall, flower head is about 60 cm across. I did three more of these flowers slightly smaller, this one was the test piece. The others were powdercoated (customer's choice) and now in the hands of the customers. I didn't manage to get any pics of those ones yet as the ground was frozen so not possible to install the sculpture... Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the result and …

The temp was 95 with heat index of 112. So what do you do? I forged a cross for an up comming art show. It is 18 X 10 made out of 1/2 in sq bar and has 6 copper acsents. The scroll work is made fron 1/2 round bar I hammered in 1/4 sq. I buffed the steel then blued the four cross points and heated the copper untill it turned a purple/ red. Not exactly what I envisioned when I started but thats what I like about this hammering steel thing you never know what twist the hot steel will will take.

My ex-wife is planning on doing an art placement (concept sketch attached below) at BRC for this year's Burningman event - she needed to forge up a straight forward tapered spike about four feet long for the armature so I invited her up for the weekend to pound out some iron and get her hands dirty. She did a super job! She took it all in stride and had a great experience trying out a power hammer for the first time. We tried a couple of different directions for the look but she decided on slender and sleek. I'm looking forward to seeing the pics of the finished piece installed on the playa. Between working some iron, the GF keeping us fed and refreshed and having a great…

Candle stand made for local church. I twisted the 12mm round cold with a homemade twister ,a car diff with a 3 foot crank. I think I may have reached the limit with this size twist and will have to gear it down as it was a real struggle as the twist got tighter! Then forged the cross and legs.
