  1. Hey all, I'm back again. Quite possibly biting off more than I can chew this time. With the post drill project still in process I am seriously considering taking this on additionally for the winter. Now I have to explain that I have no experience with these drills but I believe I possess a fraction of common sense, a hair of mechanical ability and the annoying habit of asking too many questions of those who know better before I get my fingers where they don't belong (still have all nine). I have never owned one and if I'm lucky that may change. This appears to be a Rockwell 20" There aren't quite enough photos for my liking and the definition is not quite what I would like so I am going to take a trip to look in person. If anyone has any input as to what to look for, suggestions, experiences parts that are commonly damaged or missing etc. let er rip please. I know to check babbitt bearings, the frame for cracks and damage, gears for excessive wear and missing teeth, maybe take a dial indicator and check for run out on the quill. I believe the motor looks like it may be a 3 phase. No photos of the tag. It seems I read somewhere someone had a Rockwell with a 1ph. Maybe repowered? Does anyone have any idea of age or when Rockwell quit making the 20"? Oh I may post this thread on other forums in search of information so please don't be offended if you see it again. Thanks so much for everyone's input. You all are great
  2. As an update, one machinist friend of mine forwarded me to a company called Motion Systems INC in Michigan who he spoke highly of. I spoke to a helpful fella and this may be a viable lead as they offer repair and re work services. I made contact and they were quite pleasant. Of course cost is yet to be established as I have not begun the disassembly process. I need to send the gears to them for evaluation, which is a logical request. I have another acquaintance who is a machinist at another local shop I need to check with before I send the parts off. I will keep you guys and gals updated.
  3. Thanks for the welcome and the catalog. Nice drill. I have a question for some folks. If you look at the reverse gearing, the teeth are stripped pretty bad. The forward gearing is fine. Any input in reference to having teeth rebuilt or having the whole gear re made? Not being a machinist I have seen both done but I have no idea what would be a more logical inquiry. I haven't had a chance to touch base with the few machinist acquaintances I have.
  4. Thanks. I'll take a look. I may have found an answer. It looks like a 94. If anyone has pics of a 94 so I can verify it would be a tremendous help
  5. Good to meet everyone. this is my first post. I picked up this post drill a while back and have recently gotten around to messing with it. I was hoping someone could help ID it. Only thing I can find on it is "Champion Forge Co, Lancaster PA" on the right side if facing it and "Warranted" on the left side. No model I can find, at least prior to disassembly. It resembles a a 96 but there are some distinct differences in, what I believe, is a quick return system. I have scoured pics and period ads for these and have yet to find one that exactly matches.
