Warren Nakkela Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Now try this on for size: I take this 30 ton powered hydraulic press and screw a punch into the end of the ram. The punch is of hot working steel shaped to the inside bore of the hole desired. The nose has a narrow chisel point transitioning into the oval/elliptical punch. There is a stripper plate over the work to strip out the punch. I would use Hofi's magic moly graphite dish soap lube. How wide should be the cutting edge? Smaller than the hole? By how much? Will 30 tons punch 1 1/2 inch steel? Yellow hot, of course. Best Wishes, Warren Quote
Glenn Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Try to keep the heat of the metal of the hammer at not more than 1800F degrees or 1050C degrees. It takes only some 10 tons of pressure to form the eye in the hammer. BP1003 Hofi Hammer Eye Quote
Frosty Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 That's a 75-80 ton (metric I assume) press, not 10 ton. A 30 ton might do it though. Speed is a consideration, too slow and it's going to stall and gall. Frosty Quote
Glenn Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 The Hofi press is a 75-80 metric ton hydraulic press "denison" made in England. But he says only 10 ton is needed to drift the eye. Quote
Frosty Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Makes sense, he wouldn't make it work to capacity on a full time basis. Just read the actual pressure off the gage on the face of the press. You can see it in the picture of the machine. Frosty Quote
