Purchased this today from a boot sale. It uses standard type hacksaw blades. I used to use one similar at work years ago, you could also grind the blade thinner and use it like a scroll saw on metal plate. Cost me £40 I think it was well worth it

I'm interested in adding a low rpm cutoff saw to my welding/ blacksmith shop, but have been unable to find any reviews on this. I had to place a order at Grizzly yesterday, so asked if they had any reviews on the saw they sell, they did not. I have looked on ytube, but its hard to tell how well they work or don't? Mostly I cut mild steel for different projects and am not happy with the band saw cuts, Anyone have any insight or experience with these miter saws for steel ? Thanks Gary

Hi all I have only ever used bandsaws for cutting my stock and i am now setting up a workshop and need one of my own. But I recently came across chop saws that seem to fill the same niche e.g. : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Makita-240V-Metal-Cutting-Chop/dp/B00004YOLV/ref=sr_1_6?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1422035910&sr=1-6&keywords=makita+Metal+Cutting+Discs The claims made for the modern versions of these tools seem to be compelling - faster cutting, no burrs or sparks and more economic to run. Has anyone had any experience with these types of machines? How long did the blades last for you and how did it cope with solid stock? thanks Andy

Hi folks, After much deliberation over saw types I'm in the market for a new 6x4 band saw. I've read a good few reviews and forum threads to have an idea what their drawbacks are (mainly mitreing back towards the vice) but all in all I still think they're the best saws for me. The consensus seems to be that they're all made in China then repainted and rebadged, castings are good but assembly is poor. Basically all I'm after is some reassurance that I'm not going to be banging my head against a brick wall all day every day trying to get the thing to cut straight. If I can spend a little time setting it up when I first get it and reduce the cut drift to 1.5mm across 100mm I…

Finally got my band saw the way I want it. This is the Chicago Electric Variable speed portable. Vertical mount and table make this an invaluable tool in my shop, I just clamp it to my work bench. It'll cut just about anything I need. I did a build video on the table to add to the ones that are already out there, just for grins. You can skip to the 8min mark to see it working.

Hi looking for the feed teeth for a power hacksaw. It's a craftsman model 108 1502 I think made by Covel manufacturing. They look replaceable they are ment to be turned over to get a new edge all edges are broken. Would they be made out of machine steel? Thought about making them. Sorry no pictures have to work on that. Thanks Chris

Hey Yall!!!! Its been way to long since I have been on here, but I just got married 2 weeks ago and the bride and I are settling down in our new apartment (aka my old blacksmith shop office!!), along with building a house, getting my online business going better, and dealing with my Dad going legally blind after a stroke behind his eye. Anyhoo, I got a question, Have any of you ever heard of a Rutland brand metal cutting horizontal bandsaw? If so, what problems do they have? Are they good quality? My Black Bull 4X6 saw just went down after 4 years of heavy use, and I purchased the same type of saw from Harbor Freight Tools, and took it back the next day, bec…

What bandsaw blade brand have you had luck with. I pick up a 4x6 Buffalo bandsaw about a week ago. After a few hours of tuning it cuts straight. I'm using an Olson blade and it's working great for 1/4 steel tubing, Cost is a little high but not to bad. Here is a great video on tuning up a 4x6 band saw.

Hey guys, I'm looking to cut up to 8" 16ga steel tubing at up to a 45 degree angle. Needs to be a pretty precise cut. I was looking at band saws but am worried with something so big that the saw could easily get off track. Any suggestions? Thanks

I've been looking at cold saws for years but have not purchase because of the price. I recently saw a video for a dry cut saw that seems impressive, if true. The "Evolution" 14" chop saw. They have other mitered saws and sliding mitered saw that are 10 inches. Does anyone have experience with this company or saws. I've read reviews on their saws and not all have been favorable. I've looked at the Makita dry cut chop saw which seems similar in cutting and claims and has better reviews, all favorable.

I bought this from craiglist, and when I finally got to checking it out this is what I found So when the folks told me it was working, and that it had only been used for one job, that was a lie. OTOH, for $100, I'm not out much. Does anyone here have any experience with this? How should I attack it? The gearbox bolts to the saw arm and the shaft goes through to mate with the lower blade wheel. The worm gear is driven directly from the motor via a step pulley. I know I can get parts for it (HF is still making the saw), but some help in how to take this apart would be nice. Thanks Geoff

I know a lot of people don't like chop saws for various reasons but a 14" is usually my first choice to cut most bar and pipe/tubing. I had an old black label Industrial B&D that I bought new about 25 years ago and it finally wore out so I bought a new 14" Porter Cable last year. Unfortunately, the Porter Cable is already cutting way out of square with regard to direction of cut, i.e., perpendicular to the table. I have to put a 1/4" rod under the work to lift one side of the stock enough to have any hope of getting the end square. It cuts as though the bearings on the blade side of the motor are loose, such as might be seen if the blade is lifting and the cut wan…

hey everyone. So I've been pretty busy in the shop blacksmithing, welding, and building new shop tools and equipment. I'm gearing up the shop to go from light duty blacksmithing and welding to tool, and equipment building. one of the steps i'm taking is getting a new metal saw for the shop. I currently have a Black Bull 4.5" bandsaw, and have had it for 4 years. It has been a great saw, but I have had to jerry rig parts, and now the motor is now over heating and is making a weird noise. I am looking at 3 different types of saws the Dewalt DW872 multi cutter, abrasive chop saw, and a larger band saw. I will be cutting small stock metal (1/4", 3/8",1/2", 3/4…

Had to replace the brushes on my craftsman ten inch saw today. If we think coal is high priced try some small pieces of carbon for comparison!

Hi folks, does anyone have experience of using various cut off saw blades? I want to get an Evolution Raptor 355mm (14 inch) cut off saw, (not an abrasive chop saw), my only concern is that I regularly cut hardened steel and I don't want to ruin an expensive TCT blade. The guy in the shop reckoned that the stainless steel blade Evolution make to fit the Raptor is suitable for cutting hardened steel, could that be true? I don't have any experience of working with stainless steel but the cynic in me is dubious. Cheers

Hi folks, I need a bit of advice about saws, I've done a search or two for existing threads covering this but I can't find any. Basically I want to get a bench top saw like a chop saw or mitre saw to upgrade from cutting everything with angle grinders, (mainly for safety reasons), but I'm naive about power tools and I read conflicting reviews. Can anyone offer me any buying dos and don'ts? There's a few Evolution Rage sliding mitre saws on sale at the minute but some of them sound too good to be true...and I'm a cynic. Cheers for any help.

Whenever I need to cut some small metal, I have struggled with the crappy saw that I have. I'd appreciate any recommendations of saws (and blades) that y'all like. Just looking for a good saw that holds the blade securely, is comfortable to use, and cuts well. Maybe I ask too much, but let's see what the group says. Thanks for any and all advice.

Hiyah folks! Just got this brand-spanking (several decades old) bandsaw with all the nifty features: hydraulic lowering and oil cooled. Has a few problems with holding at its highest point, and the oil pump is crap, but this'll make life so much more exciting! Rah

Here's a cheap new addition to my shop that has made life easier. I took a Harbor Freight portaband and converted it to serve as a bench bandsaw for cutting out handle profiles and trimming blade profiles. Works a lot faster and with more control than an abrasive cutoff wheel in an angle grinder. I built it to clamp in my vice. I took off the carrying handle and laid out the holes on a piece of angle iron, ground some clearance for the handle, and bolted it back together. Clamp it up in the vice and it's at a nice working height. Since it's built to be hand held, it didn't come with a cutting table, just a little stop to butt up against the piece you…

I have been using a standard 14" abrasive cut off saw for a while and was considering making the leap to a carbide tipped saw. I have been looking at the rage saws at sears, both 7.25" and 14" and wondering if anyone has owned or used either, or if they could recommend a good one at a reasonable price. I of course like the 150 dollar price tag of the 7.25" but the 1/4" thick rating for material it can cut worries me.
