I finally built some "A" frame stock racks:D Its so nice to finally have the long stock off the floor!!! I would like to incorporate my band saw as a cutting station into the storage system for ease of handling and cutting. What have you guys done or seen that you like and that works well? What saw orientation relative to in-feed table do you prefer? My frames are about 4 1/2 feet tall and I have access to both sides. I have a short section of roller for the in-feed. I may be getting a new band saw as my old Carolina is on its last legs:(. Any recommendations? If you have pictures to share, that would be excellent! Thanks!

Hi everyone, I'm new here and thought I'd ask all of ya'll this question to act as sort of an ice breaker. So with all your experiences, what is by far the best cutting disc you have used? For me, its the Smith & Arrow discs works just great. It's cheap and durable for its price. So, what's yours?

Here are a couple photos of a stop gauge I made for our cut-off saw. I used a mill to drill holes on 1/2" centers. The stop collar on the left engages the detent hole while the stop bar is pinched by the spring and collar to the right. This allows the material to be advanced to the stop bar and then the stop bar is pushed down out of the way before cutting. This lets the cut piece fall free, otherwise it binds against the blade which causes the piece to either flying across the shop or it breaks off teeth on the blade. One is too dangerous and the other too expensive. For 1/4" lengths, I just clamp a small piece of stock to the stop bar.

OK, Pardon my igorance, but I have a 14" El-Cheap-O Harbor Freight wood cutting bandsaw(belt driven) that I got for next to nothing. If I slowed that sucker down as much as I could and put an appropriate blade on it(possibly some stronger guides too?) could I do some stock cutting with it, or is this just a ridicuouls idea??? Would that be an extraordinarily bad idea for reasons that I am not aware? Any advice?

I got the drive belt and the shoes are now usuable. Does anyone have one of these and knows the band saw belt size? I'm thinking from the crude measurements i've taken. About 69-70 inches. Do they make this size? I haven't seen any in stores.

Fellow members and blacksmithaholics, I just busted my cheap chinese metal cutting bandsaw, and it will take 8-10 weeks for the replacement part. I have had second thoughts about ever buying another cheap bandsaw, and now I need your advice. For a hobbyist blacksmith such as myself, I need a reliable metal cutting bandsaw, price is only a part of the issue, I'm tired of dealing with a piece of crap, so the question is,what bandsaw should I buy? I use it to precut christopher crosses a lot, and several other small projects, and now the rolled rose napkin ring I posted on the other part of this site, I ended up using a hacksaw today.,, no mass production, but I need this…

all material being cut has an optimal cutting speed based on hardness and and machinability and tool type whether it is high speed steel or carbide the optimal cutting speed is usaully defined as s.f.m which can be optained thru tol manufatures or mmaterial sciences s.f.m, surface feet per minute is the rate you can safely pass the tool over a workpiece with minimal wear and good cutting action. s.f.m normally needs to be converted to r.p.m. revolutions per minute . when cutting a workpiece the most crucial variable in tool life is s.f.m second is feed rate of tool or workpiece . and third is depth of cut .

Hey all, I picked up a 14' Shopcraft Bandsaw that is in need of new rubber "shoe"(?) belts that go around the pulleys that the blade rests on. Anyone know where I can find these and if this is even the right term for it? I did find the drive belt at McMaster-Carr.

Does anyone use this type of band saw? What are some of the drawbacks to a hand held type compared to any other type? I was considering buying this one from Northern Tool Northern Industrial Portable Band Saw but wanted some second opinions. Thanks Larry

Hey folks, I stopped by the local scrap yard today and checked out a horizontal band saw they had. It is basically a low end Chicago model. Likely purchased at Harbor Freight. It was missing the motor and the band saw blade guides. The switch was busted on it to. Now replacing the switch and scrounging up and mounting a motor seems simple enough. However, I'm not sure about the band saw blade guides. I don't think I have the shop space, tools and time to fabricate them. So I would need to replace them some how. Does anyone know if you can order replacement blade guides anywhere? Do you guys have any ideas? Other then the things I mentioned, the saw looked OK.…
