Yesterday it was Kingsday in the Netherlands, where we celebrate the birthday of our King. We also do that by having fleamarkets everywhere on the streets, so obviously is spend most of the day there. I got a couple of wood chisels, two cold chisels, an old Nicholson Holland file, a 1.5 kg crosspeen, and a larger sized wooden plane. Pretty good haul with most of the stuff I was looking for. I'm going to use the large cold chisel and file for HC stock, and I'm restoring the plane and chisels to working condition to use them for woodworking projects. The hammer is going to be the next step for forging larger stock, as currently I have no hammers between 1.25 kg and 2.5 kg in size.

  Probably get shot around here.  Nail your card to his front door?  I'd like to see those pictures as I like cool old stuff too.  I have one of those old bike style sharpening stones but the stone is broken off the spindle.  And the handlebars are missing...

  That IS a nice haul, Job.  Every Friday is Flea Market Day here.  Not a holiday or celebration but a local thing.  Odds are, I drag something of interest home tomorrow....

 

In Scranton PA we have the Steam Town historic site. They have a Big Boy sitting outside. I can't imagine what it to machine some of the parts on that thing.

Just think of the forging done before the machining started!

We did a day trip to Steamtown last summer. That Big Boy sure was an impressive chunk of metal sitting out front there. I also enjoyed looking at the boneyard from the elevated walkway

My neighbor across the way brought over a bunch of 5/16” round bar that he’d found in his attic. Appears to be mild steel, despite the gold paint in some of it.

I Went to an auction yesterday to look at some blacksmithing stuff,

anvils went insanely high, beat up 200 pound fisher brought $1450, a broken 50 pound fisher brought 3-4 hundred, a cast no name anvil 3-4 hundred, and The top half of a Peter Wright went for $3-4 hundred

post vises went high too, and there was one champion 400 blower that went for $140 

tongs brought $16-21 a pair an most needed new rivets an were rust pitted pretty bad, 

i ended up buying a tool box a chain come along and a box with a couple hammers an some chisels an punches, and a piece of brass, spent $59 at the auction, figured the chain come along was worth that, 

On the way home I stopped by a house that’s had a cast iron table forge setting out for the last 15-20 years an inquired about it,

the old guy that lived there, was very friendly and we chatted for about an hour,

he wanted $350 for the forge but the fire pot was missing an someone had rigged up something else that burned through, and I didn’t wanna get to far into it,

the pan is in excellent shape and the blower was pretty good to, keeps running a few turns after ya let go

I was gonna pass it up but he asked what I’d give for it an I said $200, he accepted an through in some odds and ends as well as a stand welded to a wheel, So I drug it home, 

It’s unmarked but I believe it’s a canedy Otto,

anyways I just got around to unloading the truck an thought I’d grab some pictures,

Not tools yet but I'm sure I can do something with the axle and tierods. 

I don't know about this big ring.... I bought it for flat stock but it kind of tares apart if you hammer it cold..... Oh well might as well scrap it (joking)

Looks like the bi-directional rolled WI I have where it's a "platy" break rather than a "stringy" break.  WI does NOT like to be worked cold, work it near welding heat!

Nice little find today. These framed used to support some sludge pumps, I got 2 of them. The main bit is 2.5 by 8 inch solid bar. 

I don't have clue 1 what to use them for but you don't turn down free chunks of solid steel. 

Would make a great travel anvil or a striking anvil

Yes. Not as good as a hardened steel anvil (or anvil with a hardened steel face), but better than cast grey iron. Also, you don't have to worry about the ill effects of a missed hammer blow quite as much!

It’s perfect for that, John hit on most of the reasons, easy to redress with a grinder when something gets messed up. 

Nice score. I use my mild chunk for cutting and punching. 

No name on the forge except No. 142 on pan and tuyere. In perfect condition save one missing bolt on the leg support.

Belt drive blower no name but big and turns free.  1-3/4”x1/2” leaf spring pack and piece of cloth.

All for $45. 
 

So i am now officially a car owner got this over the weekend a 2000 GMC Jimmy not the truck i had hoped for, but at 1K i couldn't pass it by as the tires with it are worth almost that much

Make sure the springs are in good shape for all the steel hauling you're going to be doing!
