JustAnotherViking
Today I attempted to make my first bottle opener It's a bit rough... but it opens bottles, so let's call this one a success. Cheers!

Al It holds really well but I cut the lever too short so it a little bit of a pain to use...so I remade it. This is version 2.0. This one holds better and is more user friendly. Daswulf
I was cleaning and organizing today. No photos but WOW have I found out that I have been hoarding used files. I know I just grab what I need when I need it out of what is hanging out but I now realize I have hundreds of files to clean up and check for use. Feeling overwhelmed a bit with it lol. Tho not sad about it. I did pull 2 files out to forge that didn't feel usable....
Jasent
If you do find your self overwhelmed you can send them my way. I'd be happy to go threw them all and I'll send ya back the good ones.
jlpservicesinc
There is a guy who resharpens them and he is reasonably priced.. I don't have his information but I have seen his work which is top notch.. He labels the no good ones with red handles and the files I have tried that he has redone cut nicely just about like new.. Daswulf
Jasent, it'd cost more to ship me then I've paid for them . Besides, it sounds like good rainy day fun to go through and organize and clean them up. JLP, that would be something to look into after I've gone through them. There are some useful odd shaped ones that I don't see often and if the price was right it would be worth a shot over buying new. I have also read some posts here about fixing up old files. I'll have to revisit those when the time comes.
JHCC
Reshaped my first knife, which I’d never been happy with: (FYI, this is what it was like before: )
Jasent
I think I like the bottom one best myself. Looks like my fav skinner I use mostly for beaver and big game. What did you not like about it?
JHCC
I was aiming for a classic Nessmuk profile, but about 1/4” split off the edge, flattening the belly of the knife and pushing the center of balance closer to the point. Here it is (top) with my second knife (bottom), which was much closer to my original goal:
Jasent
Love those. That 2nd one is much nicer imo aswell. Great work. What steel did you use

Jasent
Awe I think I remember this knife. You posted about it when it happened? Looks like you saved the project nicely.

Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Cleaned up the rust and oiled the new vise. Then fabricated a stand so it's portable and ready to go traveling. Still need to paint the stand though (just too cold today). The only marking on it is 45 on the boss of the front jaw, no makers name. I need an aircraft mechanic friend haha. I see what is unmistakably a kitty down there waiting patiently for some attention. Or just sleeping. One or the other. Thanks Das. I thought I had cropped the cat out of the picture but perhaps I didn't save the crop. It's a Burman (not Burmese) cat - very friendly and always has to inspect and approve any work I do. Lou L
Had some fun time with my son today. He forged his first hook out of 1/8” round stock (he’s five, give him a break). To his credit, he did every two-handed swing with the hammer. All I did was heat it in the forge and hold it with the tongs at the anvil. He told me when his misses were my fault because I moved. Then I knocked out some gifts for friends I will be seeing in two weeks at our annual hangout/memorial for a lost brother in our crew. I know it’s boring so I tried to make bottle openers interesting. I used my first railroad spike to make something.
ausfire
Great little hook from your son there, Lou! Next he'll be wanting to put a twist in the middle. Your basket twist is admirably even. Is it a stand-alone hook or a handle for something else?
bubba682
Nice basket twist Lou ...
Lou L
I made the basket twist to learn. Hadn’t made one from square stock yet and I wanted to see how that Forge weld went. My previous baskets welded fine with round stock but delaminated when I would draw out the ends. It took one reweld but I was able to draw this out pretty well as one piece of steel. The point of all of this is that I put all that effort and learning into turning that basket into a stupid bottle opener. In the end I always end up making bottle openers for friends. I need to make about eight more for next weekend. My other projects always get pushed back for bottle openers....

Zeroclick
I made a leaf key fob, but I made a new veining fuller to use out of coil spring. I am happy with the look it gives. I also made a little door stop for in the house, was also my first attempt at a scroll only a little one but I am pretty happy with it. Both are made from 12 mm square. D.C.
Spent a couple hours in the forge last night roughing out a hammer. All done by hand, with no striker. Total time was 2 hours including forge warmup. I'm trying to streamline this process a bit, so I'm curious how long similar progress takes you more experienced smiths. Starting stock was 4" of 1 7/8".
