November 23, 20241 yr First attempt at pick up tongs finished a couple days ago. They do work for grabbing hot things that wind up on the floor. Not so sure if I'll use them much, just wanted to be able to make them.
November 23, 20241 yr I just bought a set of Pickups when I was at the UMBA fall conference at Centaur Forge. I have used them constantly since. Nicely made.
November 23, 20241 yr Wait, duct tape and a Skillsaw? I'm picturing a potential extreme Red and Green moment here. Don't get me wrong, I would probably do it every bit exactly the same way, but I have a mental picture of the saw hanging up and kicking in the bowling ball, with the saw pulling you forward in a non-OSHA compliant sort of way whilst (and at the same time even) a bowling ball with fronds of duct tape goes flying through the air in the opposite direction, presumably while at a working height something at about waist level. i.e. a "the saddle went up and the cowboy came down and that's how the yodel was born" sort of situation.
November 23, 20241 yr It’s a lot harder to hang up the saw if you made a number of small overlapping cuts, so the kerf is much wider than the blade. But yeah, OSHA would not have been happy.
November 23, 20241 yr 1 hour ago, Nobody Special said: I'm picturing a potential extreme Red and Green I have been watching the Red Green show on youtube lately. Just yesterday i watched one where a circular saw went out of control and was chasing them around.
November 23, 20241 yr I loved the Red Green show until the new version started and the writing went down hill. Heck, it's been so long I can't think of Red's main phrase. Frosty The Lucky.
November 23, 20241 yr Been a while since I've done any forging. Have yet to try out the hydraulic press I made. I did get a plasma cutter. And with that plasma cutter I was learning how to use it and cut off a knife sized piece of steel. That hunk sat on my desk for a few weeks until I could no longer contain myself. I carved out a knife from it. Made the handle from cedar. Kept me busy for a couple weeks. Check it out.

"If the women don't find you handsome, at least they should find you handy?" Or perhaps: "I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together?"
November 24, 20241 yr Ayup, those are the classics! I KNEW someone out there with a functioning memory knew. Heck, I say "We're pulling for you" here all the time. Frosty The Lucky.
November 24, 20241 yr Hondo, it has been a while, I hadn't seen you pay in months. Hope your doing ok. Nice job on the knife, which type of cedar is it,?
November 25, 20241 yr Finally got a successful forhe welded billet out of my propane forge. To be fair I hadn't really tried before today with the new build. I did upgrade the insulation to almost 3 inches of Koawool. Maybe when it's going to be warm I'll put the refractory on as I planned. Initial billet 11 layers 15N20 and 1095 hand set it.
November 25, 20241 yr Finished my new Eric Thing-style armor/bowl forge: There’s a full description of the build here: https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/77813-eric-thing-style-armorbowl-forge/
November 25, 20241 yr Thanks Rojo, Chad. I think I'll be making a hammer eye cutter with a sharper point. Maybee like the second picture. The railroad bolt I used is pretty tuff but taking a long time to knock out the plug.
November 25, 20241 yr Got a few more pieces made for my cabinet/shelf thingy. Hinges, still need holes and rivets (waiting to drill holes for when i have a bunch at once to do)Redid the backing plates to a bit smaller stock and a finial more like the hinges. Mainly because i discovered my others were to short. "L" brackets and handles. I am not using the ones with the round ends. Those were my first thoughts but nothing else will be rounded like that. So again switched gears on them and went with something more matching. Also still needing holes and a bit of file work. There comes a time in life when retirement is in order. So after years of faithful service i have decided to retire my watering can. I figured it was time after my 8th or 10th time fishing it out of my slack tank. Now i just need to eat some veggies to get a new one.
November 26, 20241 yr I had a request for a basic fire poker over the weekend. I guess I’m not so good at basic… Keep it fun, David
November 26, 20241 yr Non-blacksmithing folk will think it is basic, even if we know better, lol Looks great. Are those collar welds on either end of the twist?
November 26, 20241 yr Yes, collar welds. 3/8” collar material on 1/2” square. Forged to octagon below the collars, tapering down to 3/8” square… taper could have be better. Keep it fun, David
November 26, 20241 yr Very nice. I had an exercise in humility in the forge today so I'm just going to bask in your accomplishment, lol
November 26, 20241 yr Yeah, you gotta tone it down for basic David. Looks right handsome from here, I'd be proud to hang it by the fireplace. Frosty The Lucky.

November 26, 20241 yr "I'm a man but I can change if I have to I guess." A web search turned up some good memories, I may have to watch a few episodes. It was the "New Red Green Show" that jumped the shark. Frosty The Lucky.
November 26, 20241 yr There is an official Youtube channel that has all of the classic Red Green Show episodes and many, many short clips from them (I am mostly a fan of the Handyman Corner sketches). As far as I know, it is untainted by the "New" show episodes. https://www.youtube.com/@RedGreenTV/videos
