  1. I have a lg slack tube right next to the propane forge I Always !! cool down tongs after Each use ! & on long bars that dragon breath like to heat the hand ends up - after working bar the hand end 'go's in the tube for a cool down then back to the forge for next heat this take No time at all to do ! another trick I do once in awhile is put a very wet rag on the end of the bar to help keep it cool BUT like I always say All steel is hot until you Know it isn't ! I don't wear glove's much if you see me wear a glove there's a good reason ! also have a slack tub @ the anvil & change water often Just in case someone needs to dip there hand in clean water Steve's Welding & Fab
  2. the Simple Rule I Consider ALL!!! Metal Hot in shop until ck by the back of my hand & have never so far got burnt yet & have been welding since 1976 & smithing for 20 + years LOL now watch me Goof up also I have 3 lg slack tubs in shop & use often to keep tools cold & Hot work is under the forge or in it
  3. forge a new one out of SS steel Gee or TIG it !
  4. for my two cent's worth 2x3 is not enough I would do 4" sq tube - 3" min & maybe rebar in tubing & cement if posts can't handle wt well you'er Done ! I have a friend that does BIG gates often he will weld legs to posts run I beam across and bury & cement the hold support frame across to the other post - also rec tube will bend more than Sq tube Steve's Welding & Fab
  5. there Ti framing hammer work as Good as my steel framing hammer the same size @ a tenth the wt So makes me wonder ???
  6. I ask this ? a few years back & the subject came back up LOL some carpenters I work for have Lg titanium framing hammers they use all day long there not cheap $$ but they are sweet !! they don't work you like my Lg steel framing hammer does ! So anyone ever seen a smithing hammer made from Ti ?? or use one ?? Tomas if I remember right you had a piece of ti & was going to try & forge a hammer ?? did you ever do that ? ALSO anyone know what kind of Ti would forge well & work for this Idea I have helped make 1 set of Ti tongs @ a meet along time ago the metal forge well @ yellow heat & has a small working window I have No Ti right now I will have to start looking of a chunk from the Big city somewhere I would like to try one a see who it hammers
  7. here's my 2 cent's worth If welding o/a do you have or can find a Hemrod torch ??? they are a small hand torch that welds like a Tig torch just on o/a 4 psi I use mine for brazing all the time does much Better work than a victor torch hands down !! Very precise flame And there also a cast iron rod 1/4 x 1/4 available not sure you would want that rod but its out there / if brazing I would get a high tensile rod I can't remember the #No though I have used it often -- SO run a welding rod test !!! GOOD Luck ! & tell us what worked when done Steve's Welding & Fab
  8. Hay frosty & All have fun !!! Marks Demos are always fun & busy been there
  9. witch hammer depends on what you're forging ? a new 88 gota to be around 10 G ?? a used 165 ? $$ - is it a one piece or 2 piece ? A two piece is a bit more work to install myself I am a more power guy can you test run the 165 ?? or get near a 88 ? I have never heard of the heat problem you talk of unless its run Hard all day & then some all hammers get warm / hot depending on use a hard day on my 33 & you can't hold you're hand on it and yes I push the 33 when needed ! I need the 65# up & running
