  4. for my 2 cents that rebar is made to flex / bend not brake this means it has alot of duckabilliy sp- ? I think that would be a problem for a knife won't harden much ??? Test a small piece first
  5. I find most folks that live there life as welder's & metal worker's are already smiths but don't know it !! they just haven't hit an anvil yet to SET THE HOOK they already know how to build things cold ! when you add Heat well life change's LOL ! then there building mind gos to work !! Hook is set !! Fire fighters are also called by the anvil got to be the fire, a doctor retired I know never hit steel all his life we meet long back he need some rings & din;t want me to make them He wanted to so told him how came to hammer in & has be lost since lol I started him on the road I saw what I call the need for steel & a UNKNOWN talent he had the first day on the anvil !! 7. HAY Frosty I never got tired of you're posts ! or others !! theirs many ways to skin a cat so you make it works I have done things that good welds say can't be done LOL I always ask myself why ? then I make a fix ! when I was working for a weekly pay ck the UPPER Bose"s didn't like me much we played heavy !!! Darn never got fired though I tried to !! cause I do things right . or NOT @ all back then they scraped 90 % of that we made Gov job MY scrap was 10 % or less Hmm I think @ this point the metal sup / type changed & They didn't understand that they had engineers RIGHT ?? for what LOL that blew out everything down the line to scrap !! on the line / warp = fit up to jig & so on !! myself & another welder didn't go by the welding book & made it work NOPE !!!! can't do that do it the way the book says -- proved that wrong in front of the Big boys LOL can't think outa the box !!! WE did !! yep Nope LOL ** PS for thoughts that read this there is never a Box or something you can't do more or less !!! that is why you have come here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 LOL plant closed for a week I moved 1000 mile up the coast & never look back they called better money & what ever LOL It is a SHAME !! when LG CO didn't listen to the guy that's doing the job & making there money @ that point they can save $$$ alot buy thinking outa the box ???????/ this is one of the reasons I am here I don't have a box
  8. if you take stainless to a yellow heat the throw into the slack tub you get a black oxide that is very hard to grind off we do alot of SS art pieces & many times I have to tig weld pieces together that oxide coat doesn't weld good @ all so must grind area to well then reheat piece if I want that black oxide look on the hole piece try a test piece ! Steve
  9. I was never allowed to even touch the xo/ac torch or use the welder ever Hmm ? maybe that's why I became a welder ? but then I could use the table saw & skill saw & other power tools anytime I had a lg train layout in the basement lol couldn't have a candle though or anything to do with fire !! Don't fig

  15. well here in the northern ca if you want to work outside you put on you're FULL DUCK suit cause its raining !!!LOL or just fire up the wood stove in the shop & get to it
  16. that my MAIN problem theirs no inside left
  17. GOOD thread I have the same hammer I started to rebuild it along long time ago its still sitting outside waiting for some Love I had new slides made - clean & painted PH I need to forge out new eye spring bolts -- & was going to replace the leaf springs pack & rework the brake set up better also -- WELL then I got a small air hammer LOL Now were looking for more power so thinking of getting her back in the shop & finish her up this winter when the rain hits for you're pulley shaft instead of Babbitt I have seen Teflon or UHMB plastic I think thats the name used sp ? the lumber mills use it hear alot for slides & other use's have it machined out & it will never wear out the babbitt in mine is in good shape so one less problem
  18. HO now there's a *** CHALLENGE *** better !! LOL can't wait to see what you come up with next !!!
  19. I use a piece of wood on top so leathers don't get burnt - then cover & wrap with 2 old leather welding jackets or fiberglass insulation should work also -- anything that keeps the heat in for awhile around anvil it will be warm to touch 12 Hrs later -- you can use a propane weed burner to heat to 350 + deg you will need a welders temp stick that melts @ 350 degs get the hole anvil up to that temp !! ** Pre clean anvil / welding area = grind the rust off & wire wheel the bad spots to get any junk out of the holes peen all welds to relive stress
  20. very nice wood working joinery ! so were is the back leg / stand ? so its off the ground some ? to pick up
  21. Das not sure why that is happening on the twisting thing ? but you are thinning the top end to make a flare on the horn ! so the fullered area is thicker then the top shouldn't be a problem but ?? I find it easier to make lg pipe smaller then to take smaller pipe & flare out to a Lg size over the horn I also use a PH LOL
  22. Steve's welding here I repair LOTS !! of anvils the way to do it is like Rod Gunther wrote !!! thats how I do it now that being said do you have a Tig welder ? once cleaned those holes can be welded with a good tool steel or spring steel rod --- or use arc rod 7018 or better 110-18 a mig is last resort ! & if 110 v NO way ! good heavy shop welder only 220 v you still have to pre heat & post heat & cover over night cool slow !
  23. AFTER re-thinking this thread then working in the shop USING what I use all the time !!! to hold things & I have 5 of these in the shop on the portable welder trailer - LG outside fab table an so on LOL ! can you guess what ?? well its a HF Vice the head swivels 360 degs around has pipe jaws & can hold round stock on its end - anything odd it can hold base swivels 360 degs I do alot of art stuff hard to hold where I need it @ ANY angle you need I have yet to find something it can't hold well !!! who ever designed it did good !!!!! I just wish it was made better in the USA I will post a pic for those that haven't seen one soon - its a go to tool daily & well worth the cost !!!
  24. way to much OZ beer COOL Idea a first !!
  25. you mite consider a lite wt forklift attachment for the back more usable keeps wt @ the back near tractor & close to the ground a bit more work to fab out though it all depends on what you're picking & going to do with this set up YES you need more wt on the front end !!! Steves Welding & Fab
