  4. well if you want to learn how to arc weld ? you have a good project in front of you !! you really can't hurt that anvil much more then it is !! -- Its fixable to a point I fix anvils all the time & have done one like that also -- theres alot of work & time there ! this is what I would do first torch cut or grind off the piece that sticks out & make it sq & 90 degs that way all welds are the same leanth when welded you NEED to read Rod G anvil repair !!!! --- Build up base rod 110-18 is my choice for this --- 7018 will do also pre heat to 350 or so that much welding will keep it hot -- build up until you're about 3/16 from top & flat grind high spots as needed use stoody 1105 rod as top build up rod & yes you can do more that 2 pass with it ! an air scale needler makes it easy to descale welds & peens the welds @ the same time --- chipping hammer AT LEAST to do above --- by the time you finish welding you're welds will look much better !! that's a good practice piece to learn with would be nice if you you welder friend there to give pointers then its just time bead after bead you get the Idea LOL ** when done wrap with leathers or pink insulation or something that keep heat in over night then theres the grinding Steve's Welding & fab
  5. that is an old style ball peen hammer old school -- Before some smith invented the ball peen end REALLY LOL
  6. IF NOT welded right !! It will snap the welds !!! & pop off been there done that !! I built a PH base / box welded a AR bottom plate to it with good rod choice I thought LOL 110/18 as it cooled you could watch it snap apart lost alot of time on that one -- redo was another base plate a week later I would not use it for die's getting the weld right & safe is a pain !! It can be done though careful pre & post heat is a must ! AR is great for a welding table top though Steve's Welding & Fab PS that ar plate is still on the ground 8 years later Top table plate is still a good Idea !
  7. we forge stainless for many outside sculptures into all sorts of forms that being said I also use a Ph & press some hand work & the rest a striker if I can't get the Ph near it it moves its just stubborn LOL I don't make tools with it not hard enough got a wolf like that gets in the house next to the wood stove & Set's the Parking brake Not even a beefy biscuit will move it

  15. the tool end isn't what i am looking for its the handle end form - it self I want one that's comfortable on the hand to hold wile using that tool under the PH & also have good control of that tool ! with out Killing my hand ! I have two styles here made by a blacksmith both are uncomfortable to hold one is very hard on the hand = needing the Killer grip Now like hammer handle everyone has there Owen Ideas on that subject this should be the same-way So what style do you use ??? got a pic I am going to make quite a few tools soon only got 2 top tool forms & the need for more is @ the *TOP* of the tool building list !! now
  16. Show me what you make handle wise for you're top tooling under the Ph ? or treadle hammer what is comfortable to hold on two -- or what's is not ? dose it shock you're hand -- do you need the killer hand grip ? to control the tooling ? I need to make top tools for my hammer & handle design has been on my mind for awhile THANKS ! Steve

  19. Yep pretty much what ph said I had to pull tub out of a #33 yang I had an air Leak & though piston ring was broken Hence the Noise I was hearing replaced seal fix -- noise ended up being motor mount tightening bracket the noise transferred to front of hammer ended up going from one end of the hammer to the other cking Everything pulling off all covers cking all seals & bearing just to find that noise well short story I Know how the hammer is built now LOL
