Kast-O_Lite 97 In my search for a better castable refractory I declare my experiments with Greencast a bust, it's just too dense to make a good liner in a small forge like I run. My new portable forge will barely hit medium orange with both burners running at max. I talked to the guys at EJ Bartell last week and learned a bunch. Our soft fire brick is only rated to 2,200f. no wonder it deteriorates so quickly in our forges, 2,600f isn't out of the question on a normal day. That leads to a 3,000f+ castable refractory that is a good insulator and will withstand contact with Borax based fluxes. High alumina refractories fill the temperature and flux…

I am very happy to be working with Colter Fike to bring you two full weekend classes! Both weekends are focusing on skill building for beginners/intermediate by working through fun small projects. Below are just a few of the topics we will be covering: Shrink and stretch: Often misunderstood skills that you can use to your advantage. Project will be Spoon making (without the need for a swage block) Symmetry: Lay out with volume changes the easy way. Learn to create balanced designs with minimal math. Hammer swing tune up: Efficient hammering, no sweat! Brazing for the blacksmith: A valuable and underused metal fastening technique. …

I am moving back home to Alaska after 15 years, this coming month. Bringing my blacksmithing stuff with me. I sadly will not get to do much blacksmithing for a while though, as only own raw land up there. So when I get there, getting a roof over my head will be a vastly higher priority then pretty much anything else, hopefully I can build a house mostly myself, with some help of my roommate, before winter comes. I will have enough money for all the materials to build a house, just not enough money to pay someone to build one for me. I am only a beginner in blacksmithing, but I am really looking forward to trying to attempt to at least partially make a living doing it…

Sorry to be so late announcing our next meeting guys. My bad. (shuffle shuffle) The next meeting is Saturday July 14th. at Pat Garley's studio, "Arctic Fires Bronze" on Springer Loop. Turn in on Inner Springer Lp. by the church, if you're coming from Anchorage, Pat's is right around the T intersection, turn LEFT. If you're coming from the other direction turn in at the Fair Ground's main entrance and follow it around. I don't know if we have a demonstration set up but I believe Tristan is going to do a presentation of a basic gas forge and burner build to help get guys started. Be there or be square. The annual Art on Fire event is happening this coming Saturday 06/23/18 at the "Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry," close to the Wasilla Airport. Follow the signs off the Parks Highway north of Wasilla. I'll be set up in front of the trains, between the engines, my usual location. It's close enough to get electric power for little thing. I'll be burning coal this year. If you bring your PPE I'll let you take a lash. It's good PR to let the public see a newcomer learning the craft. Frosty The Lucky.

Hello Everyone. I am very pleased I found this site, I live in Anchorage and have been wanting for a long time to get in the craft of black smithing. I want to finally start this instead of putting it off for another year. Is there any classes near Anchorage for beginners, any one doing any training? Other then reading books and watching videos I don't have any hands on experince. I would like to attend the next meeting for the community, not sure when and where that would be. I am interesting in learning skills and have really no idea other then here where to start other then posting this. Thank you for your time.

Hello everyone! My best friend and I would like to get started mashing metal this summer. We are very new to smithing and are doing our best to read and learn all that we can. We both live in Anchorage but will be “opening up shop” in Palmer. We love the outdoors and will start with a focus on making bushcraft tools for us to use. If you have any “Alaska Specific” tips on where to get materials, tools, or any tips in general we’d really appreciate it! Thanks in advance! -BTB

I hope I disabled the link to this enough to avoid site rules and still left enough to let locals find it. Anyway Anchorage has a new source for metals of different kinds, shapes and quantities. I don't know what the pricing is like I haven't called or asked for a quote. They will cut to size and or do shaping, lasering, water jetting, who knows whating on request. Yeah, I'm a LITTLE excited. metalsupermarkets dot com anchorage Frosty The Lucky.

For any of you who can get free the next meeting of the Association of Alaskan Blacksmiths is Saturday September 30th. at Arctic Fires Bronze hosted by Pat Garley. Meetings get started around 9:00am. The business part is usually around lunch time. Meetings are open to anybody except for club business of course. Unless you want to join, then we'll elect you to something if we have to make up an office. Mark is going to demo making leaves, preforms, dies and only by hammer. I'll be making a pair of door pulls for a young lady who will attend (I hope) to call the design details. Should I bring a crock pot of Chicken & Andouille gumbo, if someone were to make c…

Mr. Barkwood is hosting a Hammer in/ Camp out and you are invited! August 12-13th at Matanuska River Campground. 925 E Arctic Avenue, Palmer, Alaska 99645 I don't know about you but I think this is WAY overdue! This is family friendly so bring the whole crew. If you have not been there before it is a nice little spot, there is a playground for the kids as well. Keith has reserved 4 large flat adjoining campsites and cleared the concept with the park management. The main thing they were concerned about was that we don't put forges on the picnic tables, so bring your own and lets get this party started!
