Titanium Alloys

  1. Started by Scott NC,

Here is something of interest. American Titanium Metal, LLC is going to invest almost $1 billion dollars in a new titanium plant to serve the aerospace industry, right here in good ol NC. It's nice to see American jobs being created. The "average" starting salary looks good as well. The President of Capital Projects certainly sounds qualified and I bet they mean business. It's really not far from here, but I bet I can't wangle my way into getting any scrap from it, when it's up and running.... Here's a link to the Dept of Commerece announcement at any rate, if anyones interested. https://www.commerce.nc.gov/news/press-releases/2024/07/23/manufacturing-company-a…

As I have said before I work at a smelting plant and can get differant types of metal one is pure titanium. Just was wanting to know what it would be good for if anything. I've seen that razor are made form it but didn't know if it would be good fore a hole knife/sword.

Good day all-----part of my "mother of all followed me homes" was 2 60 lb blocks of titanium. This was part of an estate sale of a renowned fabricator/machinist/testor metallurgist ---the gentlemans widow confirmed he did a good bit of military and aviation testing decades ago and one of these blocks is marked for Lockheed. My preliminary scan shows ti @ 88.76 fe @ .607 v @4.77-------what are the chances this was destined for the SR71 ?----i have had a devil of a time confirming the specific alloy/alloys used back then----anyone have any insight/guesses ?----all just a curiosity on a quiet Sunday ! Thanks !!

Hello all. I recently forged a couple of bowls out of titanium, and am having a bit of difficulty electro-anodizing them for the colors. I practiced on some scraps that didn't see the heat of the forge and was successful, but am not having luck on the forged pieces. I used my angle grinder to wire-brush all the scale off the pieces, but there must still be some oxidation or something else preventing the colors from showing. I then used an an grinding disc on the flat bottom and this worked, but there is no way I'll be able to get into all the nooks of the bowl with it. I'm hoping someone has a liquid I can soak the pieces in to remove whatever is preventing the anodi…

  5. A Titanium-Gold alloy (Ti3Au) has been developed that is purported to be 4 times harder than titanium, making it the hardest material known that is compatible with living tissue. Interesting stuff, primarily since I never thought that titanium and gold could bond in that manner (not that I gave it much thought), although it probably has no particular application for metal working. Still, worth a read: BBC News Article Science Advances journal where the paper is published

I recently been designing a brass part that I would like titanium coated. I chose titanium for its scratch resistance, non-toxicity (can anyone verify?), and its resistance to corrosion. Since the part I am plating is a mouthpiece for an instrument, these qualities are desirable. Side note: for all brass players out there, I will attempt to coat the rim and inside in silver if I can since I know titanium isnt the softest of metals. But back to the original question: can i titanium plate brass and if so how?

I Make fenders typically out of steel .aluminum, stainles and brass . I Have wanted to try titanium , well I finally found some at what might be concidered affordable . Well I worked up a fender . Tough stuff . If zero was lead and aluminum was 3 steel 7 stainless 12 titanium would be 18 on the scale of hard to do . Sping back something terrible . After forming I took it to the buffer and I got random white blue sparks ocationally . titanium is .6 the weight of steel and 50-65 thousand psi yeild as upose to 45 thousand psi of steel . Neet stuff if you get past mean .

Here's one of my forged titanium knives/letter openers. Color from torch heat. Really shows how well titanium can be forged. It was scrap material so no clue if pure or alloy.

I'm gonna try forging titanium for the first time this weekend. I've emailed randy and hes told me what to expect. I'll report back and let everyone know how it goes. Thanks for all the advice in these threads guys. 1/2" x 7" x 16" pieces of titanium alloy. Hopefully soon to be a knife or ten.

Looking to create a knife pocket clip. I see some people use titanium, what would be recommended thickness to be strong enough but not too obstrusive? It would need bending, anything to bear in mind if hot bending it?

I’ve had what I thought were strange requests over the years, but this one is the strangest one yet. I’ve had to do fireplace tools with German short haired pointers on the handles, hood ornaments of a monster and one as a pointing hand, requests for chastity belts that always fell through, and even a 22” diameter Easter egg to list a few and then this one comes along. I received an email from a gentleman in Minnesota asking for my help. Here was his request: “I have been searching the internet for information about forging Titanium. I came across your video on YouTube and saw how you made a dragon handled knife (very cool by the way). In December 2010 I had two verteb…

I'm having a rather odd problem I've never run into before. I got a bunch of scrap titanium plate (0.135") from a scrap yard a while ago and finally got around to playing with it. I've forged some bracelets out of it and after acid etching and heat anodizing they come out looking pretty neat. Now here's the problem: they don't stay bracelet shaped. Even though I got them to a nice yellow heat at points while shaping them they very very slowly open up, trying to flatten out again. I've had to put mine in a vice twice now and close it up (in about 5 weeks). I did some looking online and apparently ti plate has "memory" to its original form. Has anybody else had thi…

As a favor, I have been making pig roasting spits for a reenactor friend of mine. To return the favor, he gave me, in exchange, a 20 foot bar of three quarter inch round pure titanium. Does anyone out there have experience with forging pure titanium in a blacksmith coal forge? I looked up "titanium forging" on google, and the articles I read aren't much help. According to what I read, titanium undergoes a structural phase change, just like steel, at around 1650 farenheit, in which it changes to a face centered cube in structure. Can anyone give me some tips and hints on how to "play" with this material?

Hello, i hope i can pick your collective brains. I have made hand hammered bowls from pewter and copper, usually 12" in diameter and with Repoussé and chasing work on the inside. I've not had much luck with retaining any real heat colours for any length of time on copper. I stumbled upon the properties of Titanium, which i'm told retains oxide colour for ever! This is and neat idea for what i do. I have researched the material but opinions seem confused as it's usually used for industrial applications or small in the form of jewellery. Phrases like "it works like Stainless steel" worry me and the process of softening after work hardening too with tails of 450c for 45 mins…

Hi Friends, Any of you folks work with titanium? I'm trying to cut a 1" slice off of a 2"x4"x6" chunk of Ti-6Al-4V. It is slooooooooow going! I'm probably 6+ hours into it and still have almost 1" to go. Anyone have any suggestions, or is this par for the course? Thanks, Phil
