Got the forge work done on my candle holders done today at our hammer in. Then wire wheeled and wax them when I got home to my shop. The about 23” talk. Made from A36, 3/4” square and 3”x3”-1/3” plate.

These were definitely a learning experience and something I will continue to work on.

Keep it fun,

David

(Just a question for Glen and his team, is there something I’m doing work the my pictures always end up rotated? I’m posting from an iPhone…)

Natkova, if you do your best with what you have never be ashamed of your work.

Used me new mandrel today. Tool worked good but the smith was a bit off. learned a few thing but mostly it would be easier to use a drill press. Anyway here it is.

Not as nice as i would like but it was a learning day.

Added a secondary table to my fly press, to provide a broader and more stable working surface and greater facility for clamping jigs and workpieces. To the latter end, I also drilled some holes and cut some slots for mounting some vise-grip hold-downs.

I had originally planned to screw this down to some existing threaded holes in the base, but those turned out to be too stripped out to be particularly solid. I therefore welded some smaller bolts into their mounting holes I’d already drilled and ground them flat (taking the opportunity to fill in some torch gouges while I was at it).

Instead, I mounted the plate with some brackets welded up from bits of angle iron, bolted to the table and welded to the underside of the plate.

Lola the Pitbull appears to approve.

Had a sales demo day at a car/motorcycle show today.

Forged a leaf heart wall hook from a landscaping nail that sold. Also forged a large fish hook to replace one that sold.  Some other stuff including starting a spatula from a rr spike. Not a big sales day but a busy day.  Liz and the kids stopped down so didn't get to forge as much but the kids had fun.

Thanks. They brought out a lot of smiles.

I'm excited to get them hammering some time.

Rojo, nice looking nail header. There's some good  nails there. It takes some practice.

Thanks for the question!

Hi Johnnywick, welcome to IForgeIron! Don't forget to put your location in your profile so we can see it when you post.

I'm confused, though: you quoted me and said thanks for the question and then copied the rest of my post into yours but there's no question?

Do you fossik often, what did you find?

Frosty, I'm only just discovering my interest in fossicking. There are a number of places to fossick in Queensland, but the ones I've travelled to with my family are for agate (a property literally called Agate Creek) and one for sapphires (a town literally called Sapphire. No, I'm not kidding:lol:)

We came back from Agate creek with 9kg of agate nodules, cracked pieces, geodes and quartz crystal pieces! We came back from Sapphire with a tiny baggy of low quality sapphires

Cheers,

Jono.

Sounds good Jono. I haven't gone rock hounding in quite a while but recently I've developed an interest in knapping stone and have been researching knappable stone locally. Flint and chert is relatively unknown in Alaska but it's a huge place and surprisingly unexplored and surveyed. Worse most is inaccessible except by foot, river boat or helicopter.

Last summer the wife and I spent a few days in a RV campground on a bluff over Cook Inlet and discovered quite a bit of jasper, quartzite and maybe agate weathered out of the bluffs on the beach, tumbled by the tides and waves. Turns out jasper, agate and quartzite are the most knappable stones within driving distance.

There is some good fossil hunting about 30 miles north of us dating from about 75mil bp. Ferns, leaves, etc. and if you're REALLY lucky insects.  I've recently made contact with the local rock club and hope to do a little fossiking my physical condition allowing.

Good times.

Frosty The Lucky.

I was able to fire up the forge Saturday, after being shut down from a shoulder injury, and made a mouse hawk that was commissioned in March, the day after injuring my shoulder. Now to make the sheath and deliver it. I also have 8 full size hawks on order that I have to get started on, but I've informed all my customers that I am working back into it slowly to ensure I don't re-injure my shoulder.

I don't have any pictures but I helped Debi by doing some grunt work with a knife grinding jig she is building. A lot of hand filing on a curved arch adjustment slot. Hand filing will let you know how much you are out of shape.:D

Of course picking up dead wood branches & mowing about 4 acres with a Cub Cadet zero turn mower yesterday didn't help with the sore muscles. I have a couple of acres to go but had to stop yesterday because the fuel pump developed a leak. Couldn't find a kit for it so I ordered a new pump. Surprised me that the vacuum operated pump was only $29 and change.

I forced a patina onto a blade this evening, and added some letter embellishments. It turned out decently enough that I am happy with it. Blade used to be a bright mirror polish.

Gave it a nice weathered look, toned down the brightness to more of a matte finish, and added a protective coating and decorative pattern.

Hello everybody, first post in this thread but hopefully not the last.

That dirk looks very nice. I like it a lot.

Just finished this up this past weekend, practicing making some hooks and decided to get some riveting practice too. Just gonna use it to hang stuff up around the shop

Making a fruitbowl out of 30x6 with a length of 200 (all mm, to lazy to convert for you lot). A practice on using a cold and hot chisel, eyeballing (keeping all the small stuff the same size) and not buring your piece (did i mention small amd thinned out stuff?)

Now only a cross with the 4 legs peened out to 30mm at the ends again and the middle of the legs (close to the cross)is 15x6.

I continued today. Split the legs of the cross in the middle for 2/3 of their length and spreading.

And started with splitting them again but now only 1/2 of their length.

And a picture
