Corkscrew design
Greetings Pancho, I think you find it would be short lived . The weak spot is at the flat to round transition. SNAP.. Save your metal for another project. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim

How to to flatten a forged knife blade
Greetings Eddie, . It sounds elementary but does your forging hammer have s slight crown for drawing out? The finish flattting should be done with a flat face to limit the divots..Be sure to keep your metal up to forging temp and well brushed at the last stages of you blade formation . The temperature transferr to the anvil is very fast the thinner the blade ., Give it a wack and good luck. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim

Antique coal forge
Greetings Jdawgnc, I have one and so does my friend who uses it as his go to for demos. I think you could improve the performance with a few adjustments.. 1st ... a much thinner drive belt .. leather is best .. it must flex on the blower pulley and proper tension . Not tight. 2nd ... lubrication .. 30 weight motor oil 3rd .... proper alignment of shafts and drive belt. 4th... nice smooth pump action .. go full stroke .. it's easy to short stoke and go fast but it will not work as well.. I hope this helps . Just an ol Boys advice on how to tune up your forge.. Have fun.. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim

Spring swage
Greetings Paradox, . I have my beginning students make a spring fuller and a couple of bending forks,. Notice the bends in the fuller they fit the hardi better and the rised bend works as a edge guide for the spring top. Ya never can make enough tools .. Have at it and good luck. Trenton Anvil
Greetings Gunslinger, . 1910 And 340 pounds ? I do not see the Trenton Logo or a parting line for a top plate.. Later Trentons were belt line welded and all tool steel from the weld up.. A closer look is in order.. I have had mine for years and it has served me well.. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim

Almost Ready
Greetings Glenna, . That's a lot of clay.. Your forge is a sheet metal base and not cast no need for all that clay... If you want to improve the forge just put a small brake drum over the air outlet that way you will have lots of room on top for coal and a few tools.,'Just an ol boys 2c . Any idea as to maker
Greetings Eagle, . Years ago I bought an anvil at a tractor show and put it in the pile with others ... Mr. Postman wrote in his book that the Enders company only made small cast anvils about 8 Pounds.. Just to have fun I brought my Enders 150 pound anvil to SOFA and displayed it on my tailgate . Richard a friend soon found me and he ended up with it .. We established that it was a prototype and was never produced for sale.. I think you might have the same situation with yours. The Steel Puck.
Greetings Vaugn, . You could easily make a wood saddle to fit over your anvil with a depression for the puck. I would try your puck on a stump first to see if it offers the hammer resistance that you had on the anvil... Keep up the good work . Forge on and make beautiful things Jim

Coal forge question
Greetings Tracker, The answers are yes and yes.. You could cut out a hole for your brake drum pot or just fit up the pluming to the the exsisting hole.. It is wise on old cast forges to clay the bottom . I would also suggest that you bring the forge up to operating temperature slow and it will last you a long time.. Have fun Forge on and make beautiful things Jim

Forging with square steel tubing
Greetings Bill, . You will find that filling square tubing with sand and twisting will end up with a mess.. My profile picture is square tubing twisted.. The best way I have found is to set down groves on all 4 sides . Holding the ends for twisting can be accomplished by cooling that portion prior to twisting. I hope this helps . I will try to take more detailed pictures and post for you.. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim

Triumph then disappointment
Greetings Dirks, A couple of 1/4 X1 straps on the turned up portion drilled and bolted and than cut yourself a 1/4 plate for the floor pan .. Drill and bolt it down on both sides of the crack. Than add some refractory and it will work just fine for years.. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim
