  1. Joel, are you going to make all 82(?) rivets ? Surely not...... Dave
  2. Thanks Thomas, makes sense now...still learning so that's a good thing.... Dave
  3. If you read up on an electrolysis tank, all you have to do is hook it up backwards. + or positive or red to rust...Find some rusty scrap to clean and use the project for the sacrificial electrode. You can move the rust from one part to another. Been there done that. Or I have had good luck with paint remover (zip strip)also. And please don't take this as argumentative, but I thought you could use vinegar to de-rust...I've got some experimenting to do... Dave
  4. Any plan for an IFI photo this year ? I just missed the last one by seconds....... Life is Good Dave
  5. 2 1/2 hours from me........see ya there. Dave
  6. My advice would be shoes and long pants during your next forging session. Or a least some heat resistant nail polish. he he Dave
  7. Thanks, Robert and John. I remember seeing a holdfast with a toggle link, and adjustable screw, that fit into the hardy hole. I had thought this may be similar, but that just didn't seem right. I am going to blame it on ...not being a farrier... Life is Good in my little world Thanks again Dave
  8. John, I hate to be the dumb one here.......but, I gotta ask. The vice in the first pic. How does it work? Does it go in the hardy, across the face, or both? Is the brass piece a spring to open the jaws? And what might it be used for? I really like the looks of the build, but I just can't wrap this ole brain around it use. Sorry if this is obvious to all. Thanks Dave
  9. Maybe the leathery fingers was not the right term. I was not wearing groves (seldom do). I just scorched the skin and now have( almost gone) some tough skin on my fingers. Evidently I got to the water in time because there has not been any blisters show up. Life is Good Dave
  10. Note to self....make, and take a portable hot table to the next demo. I was working a demo at the county fair and laid a steak flipper I was working on, at the edge of the rivet forge while I was talking to a bystander. When I finished talking I grabbed the coal rake to tend the fire. Problem was, the steak flipper looked a lot like the coal rake. A long dip in the quench bucket and all I have to show for the mistake is some leathery fingers. Be careful when working out of your normal setup. Dave
  11. Me too, Thomas. Only I have been saving $1 bills. I have a long wish list.......I may be the guy that has to buy a trailer to haul it all home this year. LOL Life is Good Dave
  12. Twilight......you may need to try the pics again.....I can't view them from here. Dave
  13. Just a final follow up to this.....I saw no blacksmiths anywhere. I would think with all the tourist like the "wife" and I. The market should be good for someone to sell anything with an Hawaiian theme. Just say'in ..Made it back home in good shape and not broke....Life is Good Dave
  14. Thanks Frosty.....seems the wife has me going to aloha stadium in the morning for the "BIG" swap meet.......maybe a smith will be set up there.........TBD Life is Good Dave
  15. Well, the Mrs. and I made it here for a few days. Just wondering if there any smiths or meetings within the next week, that would welcome a visitor for a bit. We're staying on the far north side of the island till the 14th. Thanks, I just worry about getting an iron deficiently....lovely, here by the way. Life is Good Dave
  16. Just a tablespoon of washing soda per gallon of water will do.....enjoy Dave
  17. I see a problem kubiack........ 13 C Channels.....bad omen. Dave
  18. Depending on the set up, I sometimes have to run my charger on 6V rather than 12V to keep from drawing to many amps and putting my charger in danger of over heating..... Dave
  19. rhitee, may I ask what group you are a part of ? I'm not up on the local knife makers. I have met a few down by Elnora tho....nice work. Dave
  20. Notownkid, I Really like this piece ! It looks like something I could almost accomplish ....lol Just wondering if the upset is larger than the hole. I can't tell from the pic. I'm guessing it's a wall hook? Thanks a bunch....... Life is Good Dave
  21. Hey Steve, Just wanted to say thanks .....I really enjoyed talking to ya. I had a great time, other than that rain shower, I think the day went well. Did you sell out of books and tee shirts? Maybe we can meet up again at Quad State.....Till then Life is Good Dave
  22. Steve, I hope to see you then Sat. afternoon. I have a High School graduation party in the morning....Am I the only IFI Hoosier going? Are you gonna set up or just mingle? If ya see a fairly tall guy with an IFI tee shirt and wearing an Acubra with a JD bandanna tied on it, I could be me.......... See ya Dave
  23. Hey Steve....That's the plan. You gonna have any T-shirts? Dave
  24. Clayton, sounds like you are wanting to build a box to work in...sometimes it's a good idea to think "outside" the box. If you have room enough room in the back yard for a shed, you have an open air workspace. Which you will probably use anyway, once the sun heats that metal roof . Don't wait.....get to work...
