After 40 years of being gone I have moved back to New England and trying to get my workshop set back up. Unfortunately some stuff was left in Az including the 4X10X23 in plate steel I was using as an anvil. Does anyone know of a scrap yard in New England that will sell to the public. I have not been able to find one yet that will sell scrap, they will only buy. I do miss Tucson Iron & Steel, I could get all kinds of steel there. Hopefully someone knows of a place, near Manchester NH would be best, but if I have to travel a bit so be it. I have heard Cohens up in Concord has cutoffs but haven't made it there yet. Thanks in advance Bob

A friend approached me about a scout troop he is working with and there is a metalworking merit badge that nine of their older scouts are trying to get. A portion of it requires hands-on forging basic skills like drawing, bending, and twisting. I want to help out, but I have concerns about liability because I am not set up with my own insurance or LLC for my forge. They have all signed activity waivers and whatnot, but in the event something were to go wrong and someone wanted to sue, I fear I would probably be vulnerable, even with liability waivers in place. Two questions: A: Thoughts on my vulnerability to liability in the event of a misha…

Remember New Englanders and adjacent friends, memberships rollover Jan. 1st. You can renew online here http://www.newenglandblacksmiths.org/neb-membership/ Or save $1 by printing out the paper form and mailing it in. If you are a returning member you should receive a reminder email shortly. On a related note, we usually have 2 meets a year, spring and fall. This year (2020) we are skipping the spring meet as we are basically running the ABANA national conference in Saratoga, NY and that's plenty to take on in the spring. If you are interested in attending and or volunteering at the ABANA conference check out the fall newsletter, or google it.

If any NEB members haven't heard this already, here you go. Our old email list server, Yahoo Groups is discontinuing their service. They have been a buggy, unsupported pain in the butt for a few years now so good riddance. We have migrated the list to groups.io. Most members have been automatically and seamlessly transitioned, but if you feel you have fallen thru the cracks google them and include the words NEB list in your search to find the path to join. You do need to be a NEB member in good standing to join. If you have questions or concerns, contact your state representatives for help, info about state reps is on our website http://www.newenglandbla…

Despite experiencing 42 degree (F) overnight temps while tenting during the 2017 NEB spring meet, my wife said she will go with me to the 2019 spring meet on Cape Cod. However her boss is asking for vacation dates already and there is nothing to be found on the NEB website calendar. Have the dates been settled yet ?

I'm new to smithing, but I've got the bug bad. joined NEB, but since there's no discussion forum or much means of communication through the website, I figure I'll post here. I just purchased a table (railroad?) forge, anvil, basic tools, and some coal, but haven't had a chance to fire it up yet. Hoping this coming weekend. Anyway, I live in Pembroke, just north of Plymouth and was wondering who might be in my area to meet up with, have a beer, talk shop, etc. (I'm a home brewer that actually makes really good beer, not your average homemade swill, and I'm happy to share). Hi all, I'm new here and a new smith as well. I've taken a few classes and just purchased a forge, anvil, and some basic tools. I'm in SE Massachusetts near Plymouth and wondering if there is a good, reasonably priced source for coal around here. Any recommendations?

Good morning everybody, Looking for info to join the organization. Looked at new web site and didn't find anything to move in that direction. I am in the process of moving to Mass. from NY. Kinda like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. I'm a current member of the New York State Designer Blacksmiths. Right now my shop is pretty well torn apart, half here in Mass and half in NY. Hi All, It was recommended I poke my head in here and say hello. I'm a complete novice and just a hobbyist having fun hitting hot steel. I'm primarily interested in bladesmithing and making the various tools to enable that. There seems to be something useful to learn from pretty much any blacksmithing conversation though. I'm in Vermont, located up around the Burlington area. I hear there might be a few other Vermonters on here. I'll be keeping an eye out for activities, learning opportunities and whatnot in the area. -Nate
