  1. Thank you Sir......Very informative and enjoyable.....enjoying the tour a bunch. Dave
  2. If you would, could you comment on your lube schedule? Like, how often do you lube all those shafts and how long does it take? Is there a ladder involved, getting to some of those countershafts? I use some old farm equipment pretty regular and have to inspect and lube daily, some pieces more often. This is a beautiful shop and I am really enjoying the tour... Thanks for your time. Dave
  3. Littleblacksmith... 3/8 square stock ( I make mine from 1/2" rebar) 2 1/2" long....top cut, 1".....bottom cut, 1 3/4"....remove 3/4" from one bottom leg. I found this info on IFI some where. If you want a different size stock, just use the same proportions.....I've made them out 3/4" down to 1/8"..... Search for Fredricks Cross. Enjoy Dave
  4. Randy, I think if I had access to a lathe and some 2 3/4 id pipe. I'd make a cone mandrel to slip vertically back on top of the post anvil. But, after thinking a bit...... that may be a problem if your post gets mushroomed a bit from use. Dave
  5. Randy, just a lucky guess....I have a couple of those extra, when that A comes along, let me know..... I've been eyeing one also. Got any plans for the cut off piece? Dave IPS
  6. Randy, looks like a 10 spline axel from an unstyled JD A. 34' to mid 37' year. Am I close? Dave
  7. Thanks JHCC, I do come up with one, every once in a while......he he, Maybe I'll just use it for a small drift and a punch or two. Forgemaster, I did have just a bit of knowledge on this, but not near enough to be sure of the results. Thanks for the confirmation. Sometimes I know just enough to fail..... Dave
  8. night66, turn your tank valve on with the torch off and let it sit a few seconds before you open the torch valve, slowly...there is something in these new tri-knob tanks, that checks the flow. I use a hosed torch of similar style. See if that helps.....let us know Dave
  9. Yea Jim, something like that....after the foot vice build, this looks pretty straight forward. I have an old buss saw axel with the pulley blocks, and belt pulley complete. Some belt and a 12lb. sledge just waiting........wonder if a 12lb. is big enough? hmmm... Dave
  10. Oh no......I think I see another build in my future. That looks like something I could coble together. Thanks Alan..... Dave
  11. Thank yooou, Kozzy.......That was kinda my thought 2 months ago, but wasn't sure. And afraid to say...... I just remember ,back in the day as a kid, my dad pulling clinkers out of the coal stoker furnace in the basement. The handles were different , but the claw was real close to that. He had to reach through a door about 16" square, I think...I duknow, that was over 50 years ago... Dave
  12. Yip, I'm as tickled as a 3 year old in a pack of puppies... Life is Good Dave
  13. Smoggy, the only thing I know to do with it is to make a sword.........NOT lol Dave
  14. Yer right on the patina Biggundoctor. Plus, I got to avoid my heat treating phobia......Life is Good Dave
  15. Well, I got it bent. I did it cold in the 6" vice. It was about all I and the vice wanted for sure. After bending, the angle grinder took care of the cut. I got it installed and looks good. No obvious cracks, time will tell. thanks again for all the input.....pics attached, I hope... Life is Good Dave
  16. I'm really enjoying this thread........ Dave
  17. I'm glad I asked this question now....lots of input....Thanks a bunch. Right now I'm thinking to try it cold. I know , I said I couldn't do it cold....But, if I put a piece of angle iron on one jaw of my 6" leg vice, I may be able to squeeze it in like a wedge, between the coils....maybe....How does that sound? Dave
  18. Thanks for the input guys. I do know this spring is to strong 'for me' to bend cold. Dave
  19. Thanks Jim, I do have a plug that screws into the spring that is used on the hitch spring of these plows. I may go that way if I don't get this worked out....I just ran out and took a couple of pics so you can see what I want to do..... Thanks Dave (not sure the 2nd pic loaded or not, tried twice.....we'll see) ds
  20. Thanks Jim, actually it's a lift spring on an old IH rope trip plow. Once I cut to length, I need to bend a loop back on the end to attach to an eye bolt for adjustment. Just so happens there are two different lengths of springs on these plows. I have an extra long one but not the short one...Once I heat to bend the loop in, I'll need to heat treat to maintain the integrity of the original....not to soft, not to hard..... Thanks Dave
  21. Sorry guys, I can't find the info I need...I need to shorten pull type coil spring from about 23" to 20" and reuse it. The spring is about 2" diam. with 5/16" stock. Any tips for heat treat? All I have found is how to make knifes out of it ...LOL.... 1162 threads on coil spring.....Thanks Dave
  22. Hey Fuzz, that would be a Vulcan anvil...Looks to be in good shape. It is in the low range of quality anvils, due to the thin faceplate. Dave
  23. Good to see ya Spanky. Here's to a speedy and successful recovery. Take care.....Life is Good Dave
