  1. At least this episode shows it may not be quite as easy as it has shown in the past. Dave
  2. Hey Beginner Blacksmith, take a moment to put the Godley Tx. in your profile. Then show us what you make.....good to see ya. Dave
  3. Allen, I'll have to think on that a while. all my sledge heads are hex shaped with the flat side over the handle hole. Not sure I want a hole under the face of my anvil. I have ground the web of the RR rail some and want to keep the features I've added. If I weld the sledge head on, should I worry about getting it to hot? Also, I'm thinking I should get full penetration and not just tack the edges. Das, jeepers I'm only using A 2 lb. now....I'd have to go to a tack hammer. LOL Thanks Dave
  4. Well, after using this vice, anvil combo for a bit. I like the way the vice is working, but I am finding the "face" on the RR rail is to small. I'm leaving way to many hammer marks, because the face of the rail is smaller than my hammer face. The "fix" I'm thinking, is to cut out the rail and weld in a sledge hammer head on end, pretty much flush with the rest of the web of the rail. Any thoughts, or suggestions? Thanks
  5. Dagr8tim, the jack was just going to be tossed in the scrap, so I had to take it to save it...I'm not sure you can tell from the pic, but there is a foot on the bottom of the jack to lift low to the ground. I think the little forge will be handy to travel with. Life is Good Dave
  6. Here are a couple of items that ended up here.....The rivet forge (Buffalo?) needs more work. I got the blower (Little Champ?) cleaned out and freed up. It was full of mud daubers and hickory shells. The replacement pan has to small of holes in it for my liking, plus it's not bolted into the original so it flops around a bit. I did build a small charcoal fire in it to test. I have some old disk blades or plow coulters I could use to rebuild it. We'll see... The rat tail jack had a broken latch. I did manage to hammer out a replacement that works well. If only it matched the original a little better. All in all I'm pleased......Both were freebies....... Life Is Good Dave
  7. Well that might just be the key to his problem......Dave

  13. Jm, I'm going to preach to you just a bit.....I feel the term "bud" is a bit disrespectful in this format. If you wish not to spell out Frosty or another members name, try "Sir", it will make you sound a bit more sincere. Respectfully...... Dave

  17. Beautiful shop Jim...Me being an old tractor and engine guy, I have to ask.....what powers your line shaft? It might show in the pics but for some reason I can not enlarge them enough to tell....If I ever get to do the " Big Mac" tractor drive crossing.....expect a call from me for a visit. Your kinda on the way...Thanks Dave
  18. I like it, maybe the legs just got lost in that heavy gear a bit.....good fix Dave
  19. If those are grand kids...My saying is .....they are the blessing you get, for letting your children live......good times right there!! Dave
  20. Aren't the knees on the hind legs backwards? (not a horse guy).....where' Charles ? Dave
  21. I would think a few hammers would be pretty easy. This is a tractor part I did a while back. Dave Thanks Glen, you are correct..... Dave
  22. See if this helps........ Dave Mod Note Link removed as it suggests using stainless in the set up. The main problem with using stainless is the hazardous waste it produces. Stainless steel contains chromium. The electrodes, and thus the chromium is consumed, and you end up with poisonous chromates in your electrolyte. Dumping these on the ground or down the drain is illegal. The compounds can cause severe skin problems and ultimately, cancer. Hexavalent chromate is poisonous. These compounds are not excused from hazardous waste regulations where household wastes are.
