I need a spark guard(the front guard that swivels up) for my Dewalt DW870 chop saw. I thought if someone had an old saw that cratered, I could buy the guard from them . Thanx.

On our local radio station they have little segments of trivia, quizzes and such. And one such quiz the other day was "why put charcoal in a toolbox?". And to get to the point people puts charcoal in because it absorbs the condensation and moisture and keeps tools from rusting. That was the first time I heard that but I'm going to try it, but I would put the charcoal in some kind of fine mesh that would allow the moisture in but help keep the dust from going through the tools when the charcoal got crushed up from banging around. Maybe charcoal briquettes would work too?

Hi Everyone, I'm new to blacksmithing, but have done a little forge work. I have a complete mobile blacksmith set-up and I just got a new permanent forge and hood made for my shop. I have lots of hammers, tongs, three post vises, two anvils, and a post drill as well as bending and cutting hardies I've made. And tools I used before blacksmithing like a welder,an acetylene set, a grinder, a drill press, bench vise. I hope to get my shop forge set up set up in the next couple weeks as well as my wood stove in my shop so I can start working all winter in the shop. I really hope to have a good time here and learn a lot from you guys who know your way around 'smithing. I'v…

Hello all, my name is Michael. I have never done blacksmithing before other than straitening out bent axles. Blacksmithing has always intriqued me but have never been able to do anything about it. Good thing is that I may be able to start this year. So I've decided to start researching and hopefully begin collecting tools. Money is limited for me right now. The tools I have now are a bench grinder with 80 and 60 grit wheels, a 3-5lb mallot, a 6in section of railroad track, some pliers and hammers and common tools like that. I have a grill but my father will be using it for food in the summer. I do have access to 55gal drums at the local auto shop. He said they would give …

  8. Hello. today I just finished my first knife, and know exactly what I'm doing on my second one of the same style. The drawback is that when I got in, my brother was having a get together with his class, who quickly pointed out to me that my hands were bright red, the skin burned through on a few fingers, old burn scars having a little historical reenactmnent and the skin of my knuckles inflamed and splitting open in more that twenty places. I had not noticed this before. now I will have to lay off the forge for a few days, and smear funny pastes on them (my dad is a doctor, not a craftsman so doesn't believe in work hardening one's own flesh) but at least my first knife i…

I got a Drill Doctor for Christmas and I have to admit to being a bit skeptical at first. However, since I punch holes like old people high jump, I drill most rivet holes. I burn up a lot of 1/4" bits. I grabbed a bunch of literally useless bits and got to work with this gadget. I learned how to do it correctly in about 5 minutes and went through that pile of bits in not much more than 5 minutes. Every one of them would quickly drill a smooth hole in 1/8" mild steel in just a few seconds with my crappy little Taiwanese Drill press. Yep, they work pretty good. However, for $70, I could still buy a lot of 1/4" bits.... :D

This hit pretty close to me in more ways than one, and I thought I would share. irnsrgn I wish you knew...............(written by one who does) I wish you could know what it is like to search a burning bedroom for trapped children at 3 AM, flames rolling above your head, your palms and knees burning as you crawl, the floor sagging under your weight as the kitchen below you burns. I wish you could comprehend a wife's horror at 6 in the morning as I Check her husband of 40 years for a pulse and find none. I start CPR anyway, hoping to bring him back, knowing intuitively it is too late. But wanting his wife and family to know everything possible was done to try …

We made it to Santa Fe last night. We can't check into the campground untill after lunch today so I made Steve get me a room. We left Louisiana around 6pm Thursday and drove untill 3am then stopped at a rest stop somewhere in OK for a nap. We had to park between two cattle trucks. Between the cold and the diesel fumes and the "hamburgers on a halfshell" mooing all night, I did not get much sleep. COWS ARE LOUD! The sunset was worth the drive. I can't wait to start class Monday. By the way, we did not have any problem finding diesel. We may have trouble paying off the credit card when we get home :D

I got up the other day and there was fresh snow falling on top of the last 2 previous snows. It was like a Thomas Kincaid Christmas card outside and I thought I'd put up the rest of the outside lights that I keep putting off. I almost felt "Christmasy" if thats a word. Little did I know I'd end the up making snow pigs. What! You aren't sure what a snow pig is? I am relatively sure you've all made snow pigs, If not you have been far luckier than most. Let me explain.... Remember long ago when you were small and the world was big and exciting and you hadn't learned terms like romance, mortgage, mother in law, divorce, child support, tax audit.....you get the idea. It wou…

Irn, just read your stories of the barber, and brazing in the airfield. Excellent work, you have a gift for the narrative. You throw in enough tech stuff to keep my non-liberal-arts brain enthused in the story. Don't stop now, I want to hear about you working with your family after school as a youngster, more explosions, and working your way through tough days with a clipboard screwball staring down your neck. If you could slow down for 30 minutes, I'm sure some gov't official would be happy to hang a national treasure medallion around your neck.. Thank you mike

I just received this email that I'm sure is just a new and much more convincing version of an old scam. It is suprisingly convincing in that the grammar, and spelling are very American. Of course the premise is an old scam, so it set off lots of "red flags". I did check and US money orders are legal and apparently easy enough to cash in the UK. Anyway here it is so you all can be warned. Pam Hello Dear, Good day to you, my name is Susan Bryant, I am an artist with my husband James Bryant, and we are the owner of Susan Art World. I'm from London, United Kingdom with my two kids, four cats, one dog and the love of my life my husband James Bryant. It is definite…

Living with a blacksmith is like living with a 2 year old because: 1. They're always beating on something. 2. Mom's kitchen is one of there favorite places to play, they're always baking something you wouldn't want to eat. 3. You never know what you'll find in their pockets. 4. No matter how many times you tell them to be good or they'll get coal for Christmas, they just keep being bad. 5. They have their own way of knowing when dinner is ready, when the fire goes out in the forge. 6. They always get dirty when they go out to play. 7. Dirt is still the sign of social acceptance. 8. If you don't bathe them yourself, they'll never get their elbows and behind their e…
