I know, I sure get some odd jobs. Keeps it interesting. A few years back I had a lady contact me that does Pysanky. That's Ukranian egg decorating. She does beautiful work! Her house is full of all kinds and designs of eggs. As she is from the Ukrane many are historical designs and some are her creations. She needed an egg about 22" in circumference to use as a sign and possible for a lamp for her Pysanky museum. She had chosen several designs that she thought would work and we agreed on this historical based design. So now to figure how to create it. As it was also to be used as a lamp it needed an open design. Then how was I going to form this large an item and keep bot…

I attached some pictures I thought you all might like, I think they are incredible. They were done by someone who moved into my building a few months ago. You can see a lot more pictures on her website here: http://staceyleewebber.com. She should offer lessons in patience....

The Russian Rose is truly a clever blacksmith project. One of my first instructors made one, but I never understood his explanation of how it was made (I had to wait for this forum for that). The problem with the Russian Rose is that while it looks just fine looking down from the top, from the side and from the bottom it looks goofy (and very un-rose-like). What it's missing is the bottom part of the rose, the leaves that cover the rosebud before it opens. The technical name for this part is the sepal. I've cobbled together a way to craft a sepal. I use thin gauge sheet aluminum (something I have lots of) which in my case comes from the lids of cat food cans. I m…

This was a great little job and had an opportunity to design something totally new to me. The following are some sketches, progress pictures and the final result. The client had a 30″ x 40″ canvas picture and was looking to give it a decorative frame. The content of the picture was distracting at first and after meeting the client she had an attraction to skulls. Working with that, I tried to put some elegance and keep it appealing in the iron work. Thanks for reading and please contact me if you have any questions. These are some pics of the process from conceptual to finished. About 30 hours of work and weighs in at 38 lbs. I have a large dry erase board that I sk…

I commented to a photographer, Sean Stevens, who has just moved in at the complex where my shop is located, that the time that one of my roses is most beautiful is while I am nearing the end of making it, when the flames from the torch go down among the petals and are diffused, coming back up as a second flower of living flame. I said that usually I was the only one who got to see that beauty. He asked if he could shoot the process, and I agreed. I put his beautiful photographs into a slideshow: http://www.youtube.c...bed/LV1INAgmfhA And a few of the photos on their own, including my photos of the resulting bouquet of a half dozen steel roses:

Here is a piece I just finished for an Xmas gift.It is 22g or 20g mild.I guess it's not true repousse, its only lightly dished with some accents chiseled/punched into it.It was supposed to be a Chesapeake Bay rockfish(striped bass),but I did not like the way the stripes turned out.So I just heated again and left some blue.Happy holidays. http://s1087.photobucket.com/albums/j476/tantofolder/?action=view¤t=repoussefish.jpg
