Those aren't boards, they're components. <SHEESH> No wonder the cow is offering to help. The dog is holding component 1778 till you're ready for it.

Be sure to put her supper within reach okay?

I’m really wishing I had just welded up an a frame and thrown some swings on it

A yup. That's what I did. The top bar cradles in the angle iron and is bolted through. Figured I'll have to expand and make it longer once they start bringing friends over. It holds 3 regular swings fine but is crowded with those big disc swings.  Thinking it is already time to expand.

All the pipe, angle iron and bolts in this was salvaged.

Very nice, John.  Looks like something from Colonial Williamsburg.  Now you need a big walk in fireplace, cranes, griddles, gridirons, meat hooks, big forks, etc..

John, Great looking trammel hook. Been wanting to make one but never think of it when I ready to forge. What did you use to make the "teeth"?

If you read the instructions, it says "some assembly required" (grin)

We had to replace our front entrance storm door. The old one finally gave up after 40 or so years. The instructions for the door said installation time 2 hours. It took me that long to read and absorb the "manual" after finding the English version. Four days later we have a new nice insulated storm door, although the weather did have something to do with the delay in getting it finished.

It's been a very busy couple days here. I was very fortunate enough to have my family's help through the process. My Uncle who is the smith who's teaching me (I've read the mistakes newbies make section) (I'm not a very good apprentice) made himself, my cousin, and his boy available. Mostly my cousin was here with me while we set up the new shop upgrades. As I said been busy busy, I'm ready to get back to work...but we did get a good forge day in today.IMG_1072.jpg.702e6d49db9069120ebe54c6bd1bc659.jpg

Initial shaping with a side-cut hardy and final shaping with an angled bottom tool recommended by Kim Thomas in one of his videos*.

I’ve since added a bit of steel at the front of this, to keep it from slipping too far down the hardy hole.

FatBader, your totally right hes to young to fake a smile!

nice score on the power hammer by the way!

it looks like your smithy is really coming along!

Im glad to see your still running that awesomely giant Gas rig!

I don’t know what I’d use it for but I definitely have have some forge envy!

I roughed out a small camp ax/tomahawk using the wrap around method with wrought iron as the body, and 5160 as the bit. All welds went good and got to the point of drifting the eye and drawing the cheeks when it struck me that I didn't have an ac/tomahawk eye drift so I set out making one. Started with probably 9 inches or so of about 1.25" roundstock. I drew out the handle then started tapering the drift end when my brother showed up to help strike for me. After roughly an hour of work we got it tapered out pretty nice. He is coming out after work tomorrow to help again and we will finish flattening out the taper we have, then beveling the oblong drift to tear dropped shape. Super excited to finally have an ax eye drift and really happy how my forge welds went tonight. I've been really challenging myself to do some sort of forge weld every time I light up my forge to get more comfortable forge welding, and this project I think really pushed the limits of my rivet forge burning charcoal. Coke is a LOT easier to build heat and weld in with this size or forge and lack of a fire pot

Went to the scrapyard Saturday with US$6 in my pocket and spent US$5.50. My big find was a wrought iron trivet for open fire cooking.  Heavily rusted showing a coarse WI pattern---the fun thing is that I've done a dozen or more ones exactly like that, forged the same way just from drawings.

My guess is that it's around 150 years old; perhaps spanish colonial.  Prices have gone up though 25 USCents a pound! Did some prep work for my MNABA demo next Saturday after lunch.

Today, road trip to Albuquerque to see  our oldest Daughter being proposed to.  Long day as we spent a lot of time meeting her fiancée's family---warped and twisted humor on both sides; so the marriage has a good chance of working!

MAN that's one fancy swing set Billy! One look at that smile would make me forget about a few little injuries instantly. I don't even feel like teasing you for some silly reason.

Nice job on the trammel John.

Billy, you wait.  It won't be long and Max will be trying to see how high he can go on that swing.... :)  Nice!

Totally worth it TW. He will have many smiles on that.

Thanks John. That is one way I was thinking.

Nice hammer FatBadger.

I like the hawk CLB.

Thomas, that is a really cool save from the scrap.

Thanks, Das.

My steel supplier has gone up to $1.50/lb for drops.

Welp, got another leaf spring in the scrap pile.

So with a little time i had yesterday, the lady of the manor spent the day with the granddaughters so me and the cat were home alone. Why not build a fire? Had another idea bouncing around the old noggin for a door bolt. This is one for the top of the door held by spring tension. Made the bolt portion to small and now cannot get straps to hold it to the backing plate tight enough. No pics of the mangled backing plate. So in frustration i switched gears. I have a night stand to build for my daughter. I need corner straps, nails, a handle, hinges and a latch. Got a good start on that stuff but nothing finished to show.

I ought to pick up my swage blocks. Piece of advise, if you trip on one do not try and kick it.

Nice Trammel! Have to check out that FB group.

A friend had the first open forge saturday at their shop and I went to help out. Not enough gas in the torch for my project, putting some "Life" into a forged, multi piece figure. So I helped out some, the shop's part time welder is really a jewelry person, and wanted to make a RR spike coat hook so we talked it through, did some bends and some drilled some holes, we'll work on punching holes next time. Drawing out the shaft of the spike was going slow. Checking if they minded, I offered to do a bit of work over the horn.  'Oh, you mean really hit it!  Yup.'  Jeweler's work had them choked up on the hammer and tap, tap, tap. Goal was to go home with something to hang on the wall and we got there.

A dish of food for your dog of course Billy, the steer is standing in food. I've been around THAT much you know.

I'm not ignoring you other guy's efforts but messing with Billy can get distracting.

Good job on the Hawk, what's it weigh?

That's a nice hammer, I like it.

Bummer about the door latch but projects go south sometimes, club dues. It looks good regardless, smooth transitions and texture. I award the work a Frosty well done.

Thank you!

The FB group is private, and there's a one-time subscription fee to view the videos. Still, I've found it to be worth it.

So tell us Dax, did your hand hurt as much after talking to your hospital neighbor?

Frosty The Lucky.

It didn't hurt at all, that's why I was in hospital, I cut through the nerve and had zero feeling in my little finger and half of my ring finger. 1 surgery and about 10 years and the feeling came back.

Some excellent stuff being made on here.

It's so frustrating not being able to get in my forge. The sooner my lungs recover from Covid the better

This morning I have been forge welding the ends of 4 rod election sign baskets and cleaning up the ends of the 1/2" sq stock I hot cut for the NMABA meeting next Saturday.  I'm going to Demo incised twists on the 1/2" stock and twisting the baskets on the forge welded stuff---and then we will have a hands on for newbies time. Hence the extras and the pre-forge welded ones.  I weld in coal and at the demo there will be only propane forges---also a limited amount of time...

I got 14 forge welds done and had started on the last basket preform when I thought; perhaps I should go to the house and check my blood sugar.  66; so am banished from the shop until I'm back up to not falling over and having convulsions range.  Of course this means I will have to clean out the forge and start over just for 2 small simple forge welds.

Ya'll are turning out some nice work. I've not had any time at the forge, due to other things needing done.

Spent the weekend enlarging the bog for the goldfish pond. And thinning out the plants. Gave away about a dozen Black Gamecock Iris.
