It was once again to wet in the forest to haul logs so I fired up the forge. I made a couple more page holders and a Nordic belt buckle (still need to make the belt) hopefully I'll sell this stuff at a decent price to help pay the bills! Nobody's shop is open and spacious, they're all crowded especially when we're working on a project. We would all like to build a larger shop and fill it with more equipment and tools. jlpservicesinc Posted June 17, 2019 Share Posted June 17, 2019 All depends on how much storage room you have or want. the trailer at 8X10X10 is nearly ideal for the types of things I make in it.. For some extra room and storage 4ft longer would be great. With that said. the "REAL" shop will be 40X60ft closed space and 80ft overall. Welding gases and metal storage area. Storage for the items not in use takes up a lot of space. Alexandr YOu use the space well and it seems as though you have a pretty good turn over.. I used to make my own handles for sales items, (Like my eyes a little rounder/fuller) for hawks but now I buy them for a sales item. This gives people who don't make their own handles the ability to spend 15-20.00 on 4-5 handles and actually throw the thing.. the handles do break and being able to give them an easy source works out very well. I used to tell people if and when the handle broke then can send it back to me for rehandling and sharpening I think it was 30.00 or something like that back in the day.. I have never had one come back, but I was also selling them for 60.00 complete for a straight wrapped eye. Well, that is the idea anyhow. A hawk eye shape is fairly standard now but with this said there is still variation both in handle shape and it eye shape so custom handles still exist. Michael Posted June 18, 2019 Share Posted June 18, 2019 Spent some quality time with a couple of angle grinders, grinding disk and flap sander, cleaning up the two stakes tools I'd made at a hammer in a few weeks ago. The lovely wife commented 'you don't usually polish that much'. making a heading plate from one inch plate to make bottom tools with, after laying out the odd ball hardy hole size (7/8" go figure!) and drilling out the corners and then some, took a cape chisel to the webs, got as close to the line as I dared and then found a safe edge 'dreadnought" file, curved single teeth, to finish up the sides. BillyBones Posted June 19, 2019 Share Posted June 19, 2019 Made some new tongs. 3/4 bar, then welded 1/2 bar for reigns. Man, i love welding with coal. Still more shaping and the like. (and yeah i know need to pick up the scrap, but some it comes in handy) Hardened my tomahawk. Tried to make another, failed miserably. But hey that is the learning curve. The worst part though is the edge is my first piece of "Damascus". I am still going to grind an edge on it and etch it just to see what the pattern looks like.
