Rojo Pedro
Not blacksmithing since it was too hot to light the forge but I used a hammer and stake that I made from 1040 so all good. This is my second attempt at raising and super happy with the way it came out for a practice piece. Took a couple hours and an unbelievable amount of hammering, probably 10-12 annealings. Thanks for looking .
GhostTownForge
How did you anneal it?
JHCC
Well, speaking of fly presses, I used mine last night to do some cold-forming of some bowl blanks in preparation for hot forging. On a side note, I don't know if I posted about this before, but I added a piece of heavy-duty angle iron to my bench shear to act as a table that supports the workpiece. Together with the regular stock hold-down (rotated downward from its position in the following photo and adjusted to about 1/16" above the workpiece), this made cutting out the circular blanks a LOT easier. So much less work than burning them out with a torch and cleaning up the edges on a grinder.
Camerican
Made a little pipe holder out of some c channel I had kicking about. Nice little project while I was warming up the forge to forge weld some finials...
Hefty
Rojo Pedro, that's some nice raising! I did couple of pieces recently, one of which was very similar in dimensions/proportions but I really struggled to get the walls as steep as yours. Daswulf
Made a skull out of 3/4" steel this time. Cut it off tho one will end up a bottle opener.
LarryFahnoe
Alas, poor Yorick! Nice work Das! I think it will make a nice bottle opener & prolly be a big hit with the iron workers. --Larry
Daswulf
Thanks. Have a few more nights to practice before I demonstrate saturday morning. Next one I will try to make into a bottle opener. Been a lot going on so by the time I get a chance to forge at night I'm already tired and ready for bed.
Scott NC
That turned out well. I have noticed there is a thin bone layed back in the nose of skulls that kind of make them look more like nostrils. Maybe to finicky for forging though. Just a thought. Makes them look meaner.... Daswulf
Good point Scott. Could try with a different shaped chisel on each side to save the center section.
Frosty
Hmmm, sounds like time for some modeling clay and maybe a little stick whittling if there isn't a punch that does the trick. I LIKE it Scott, good idea! Frosty The Lucky.
jlpservicesinc
Rojo, that is some amazing work.. Super hard to get the corners to be sharp on the bottom.. How did the inside come out? Any cold shuts or folds? Das, super nice design.. Looks like you flattened the nose and eye sockets back in to gain the shadow and look of depth. past Saturday was NeB fall meet. I was able with assistance from young Mr Yaggy get the eye punched into the steeled wrought iron. No proper sized punch nor drift so made a proper drft on Sunday at the Sterling Fair demo.. I also started work on the fancy Tomahawk I was going to enter into the Northeast Blacksmiths Associations Fall meet at Ashokan NY.. Stacked wrought iron and drawn against the weak side of the welds. Sadly over the past weekend I came down with Covid and have been incapacitated since Monday. I'm feeling about 75% today thursday with only a slight sore throat.. The hammer will need to be drifted and upset more around the eye.. Drift is 3/4" sq back to back and 3/8" X 1" upset, stacked and welded onto the side. by the way.. I do not like doing large forge welding jobs in public like fairs.. At blacksmithing demos or events its a free for all..
Daswulf
Thanks Jennifer. Yes, I used a rounded chisel to hammer it back a bit. They will improve as I make more. Nice work and improv on the the tool. Hope you get back to 100% soon.

LarryFahnoe
Alex, the first piece is very interesting, maybe for the corner of a building? I love your joyous & playful curves, particularly on the second piece. Beautiful work as always. --Larry
jlpservicesinc
Alexandr very nice as always.. Very consistent.. Love it. Tomahawk finished..

Goods
That is fantastic JLP! I wondered what you were doing with the strange scarf! I’m working on some tomahawks myself. Got five started: I let the last on get away from me and burn the pole a bit. Finished it out like the rest hoping to save it. In the end it probably going to get scrapped or repurposed… Body is cold rolled and I’m not sure what I’m going to use for the bits yet, but I’ve got plenty or choices. Next step is to wrap and weld them up. After cleaning them up really good to make sure my welds take. Of course I got some tong blanks made at our last hammer-in, so I make a set of tongs to hold the pole first. You guys think I should make a pick-up style sized to the pole or bent jaw? I’m kind of torn between the two. Bent jaws would probably work better, but the pick-up style could be more versatile. Right now, I still don’t have a very large selection. Keep it fun, David
JHCC
Bowl work. Started by deepening one of the notches on my six-way swage. Here’s before: And after: This allowed some even deeper cold-shaping of the initial creases: Rough-forged a couple of bowls: And somewhere in the middle of all of that, broke a hammer handle (which was a bit of a surprise):
Chimaera
Goods and Jennifer, great tomahawks from both of y'all. I'm still on my 4th (5th?) attempt with no luck yet. Praying this one will take, but not too hopeful. It's welded in the middle but not anywhere else.
Daswulf
Loaded up to do a demo for the local iron workers program in Pittsburgh. Of course I loaded too much stuff. All to teach and share the craft to anyone interested. Also, I have No idea what i am getting into or what they reAlly expect. All I know is i have some project ideas. Might be fun, might be full on social anxiety. Or could get a flat tire on the trailer. Who knows. Pics to come whatever happens.
Shainarue
Jennifer, that tomahawk is beautiful! Glad you're feeling better and hope you're back to normal soon. Das, looking forward to your update on how the demo goes. I worked on a poker end this evening using a technique from the ABANA level 2 curriculum. I'll try again soon. Not happy with the bottom tine. I think I just need to shoulder in the pillow deeper.
Rojo Pedro
Good job Shaina. Nice work everyone Jennifer that is the best looking hawk I have ever seen. Love the wrought
Les L
Jennifer, I love that hawk, I have a couple of pieces of wrought iron that may be enough material for me to try one out. I just hope I can make it look a fraction as good as yours
