Curious what would it have been made to be used for? Also what sort of process was used to make it? What type of material?

Looks and sounds like cast iron. Could be for setting rivets, straightening nails, that kind of light work.

Thanks! I'll pop it on the bench next to this. Should be an alright pairing for a bench. As this vise isn't one to be hammering away on as its not a blacksmiths vise.  I got them both locally, The anvil I got for £20 and the Vise I got for £20.

Yep, jewelers bench vise. They are good for working things out with clay. I have a piece of 3in. Plate and a small Czech hammer I use for figuring things out with refrigerated clay.

Hello, this is my first time posting on the forum. Here are my 2 anvils thus far, I picked up the Fisher 120# anvil for $150 from a farriers daughter who was moving and wanted it gone. The second anvil I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it's a peter wright. It's 100# and a has "solid wrought 0 3 17" (At least that's what I can read) stamped on the side. I bought that anvil for $250 from someone nearby that also needed it gone.

I am still new to blacksmithing, I've only made a few things. I injured my back last year but I hope I can get to using these more soon. I just picked up the solid wrought one the other day, it certainly has a lot more of a ring to it than the cast iron Fisher with the steel plate. Thanks to everyone else for showing their anvils, it's nice to see some unique equipment on here.

THall Just from the pictures they look very good indeed. And you got them at excellent prices. Count your blessings because you did good. I'm sure someone with the right knowledge will be along soon to help with if it's a PW or not

Dangit, I'm gettin' ticked off.  All these great deals on  good anvils and all I can find around me is beat up pieces of trash for $6-$7 a pound!!!!!

Oh...............Super anvils and super deals, THall.  Happy for you.  (but still ticked!)

Hey, THall.............how well it rings isn't quite as important as how much rebound it has.  Find a 1" ball bearing and drop it from a height of 10" and measure the percentage of rebound.  If it's 90% or higher, you can expect me to drive up and steal it from you in the middle of the night sometime.  (er-uh, dat dere was a joke!)

It's in the hole but not stuck, the farrier had put a railroad spike in the hardy hole I'm guessing to create a smooth surface over the top of it. Right now I took it out and set it aside, i'll see if I have a need for it in the future.

Thank you, I have been seeing nothing but $5+ per pound for a long time. I don't know what I did right to stumble upon these deals, but I've been looking in every crevice trying to find them. I've gone down to the local scrap yards, amish auctions, and I've asked just about everyone I know that goes to auctions to keep an eye out for anvils and hand planes. I hope you find your deal though, good luck.

I thought it looked like a spike. I'm glad it's not locked in there. I was trying to think of how you'd get it out. What kind of forge are you thinking of running?

Good find for both of them. Hope you have read about not doing any grinding, milling or welding on the hardened faces. Fishers are nice and quiet but still top of the anvil pyramid IMO. Have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST   It covers using the forum like using the quote feature and resizing pictures among others.

I'm hoping to do a 1 or 2 burner propane forge. My hope is to first make some knifes, and then later try out pattern welded knifes. As long as I can get the heat up enough for forge welding I guess I should be fine. I understand that ribbon burners might be better for even heat distribution but I don't know if I want to tackle that as a first forge.

I don't have a ball bearing currently, but I tried letting my hammer pivot and bounce off of it. The wrought one seems to have more rebound than the fisher, but it made a lot more noise doing it.

Well now, my newly acquainted friend, one isn't officially a blacksmith until one has that tell-tail bulge in his pants.....................er-uh, from a 1" ball bearing!

Welcome aboard T, glad to have you. Those are SWEET deals!

There are a couple popular urban myths rearing their heads here. Ring isn't an indicator of a good anvil, Fisher anvils are known for being quiet and still top shelf. Listening to the ring or clank clunk, etc. while tapping a pattern over an anvil's face  IS a good way to locate hidden damage. Wrought body welded steel face anvils can suffer delamination of the face. Causes vary but it still results in dead spots, the rebound is diminished and the sound is dead.

Another myth is the 1" bearing ball rebound test, a 3/8" or 1/2" bearing ball works a treat but can be hard to find after a wild bounce, however you can carry several without noticing. Unlike packing a pound of steel in a pocket.

Those are beautiful anvils, I hope you bought a lottery ticket that day. I'm thinking there are guys getting into the craft who should buddy up with you, you seem to be an anvil magnet.

My old lady got the grandkids these "insect repellent" bracelets. I keep telling her she bought them flea collars. (".." gives a clue as to there effectiveness)

When I was in Ohio I attended an Amish auction ONCE, after listening to them colluding against "english" bidders I decided it wasn't worth the hassle.  Funny that German, which was a language choice in my high school in NJ, first came in useful in Kidron OH, USA. (I've also used my HS German to help Mennonites from Canada in filling out the Mexican immigration forms down here at the border as they visit relatives that chose the southern option.)

hi tom powers where did you go to high school in nj  so did I a long time ago .
