  1. You should be able to come up with a 20# tank for free. The old valves can not be refilled and they are hard to dispose of. Just look around a little, go to a place that refills tanks and see if they don't have one that you can have for free, or go to an auto repair shop that does AC work and get a Freon tank, or go to the local HVAC shop and ask for one. If you drive your pick up be careful that they don't fill the bed up. They are hard to dispose of. They are probably just waiting for someone like you to come in and ask. My forge is a 30# tank with a 10" ribbon burner. It is not what I recommend but I was given a burner and it was to big for a 20# tank. Again, let me know if I can help you. See my profile for contact info. Wayne
  2. Read the Build a Gas Forge on the Forge Supplies page of my web-site. You can get the web-site and other contact information on my Profiles page. That is a 30# tank. A 20# would be a better size for the reasons that Frosty mentioned. You could even go with a Freon tank for an even smaller forge. Two inch blanket is hard to form around in small spaces. Let me know if I can help you. Wayne
  3. Check out the Build a Gas Forge on the Forge Supplies page of my web-site. The fire brick is a heat sink and will cause you to use excessive amounts of gas and will therefore, also take a long time to heat up to forging temperatures. You can get the url for my web-site as well as other contact information on my Profiles page. Let me know if I can help you. Where are you located? It would be good to put that in your Profiles page. Wayne

  8. Check out the Build a Gas Forge attachment on the Forge Supplies page on my web-site for instructions on how I like to build a good, efficient, and long lasting forge. It is surprising how easily you can build a great forge, better than most commercial forges for much less money. You can contact me by PM or e-mail or phone from information found on my profile here. Let me know if I can help you. Wayne
  9. I believe that an IR coating will improve any gas forge. ITC-100 costs about $100.00 per pint. Plistix is $15.00 and Metrikote is $20.00 per pint. Why would you consider paying $100.00 per pint when $15.00 or $20.00 will do the same job? You can e-mail me or PM me or just look at my web-site for helpful information. Let me know if I can help you. Wayne
  10. You can build your own forge and save a lot of money and have a better forge too. You can get my web-site, phone number and e-mail addy on my profiles page. I prefer contact by e-mail. Wayne.
  11. You did not tell what kind of a hammer you have. I have a BigBlu hammer. If you get down and look the treadle is activated by a 3/4" ball valve. I made one, bypassing the one on the hammer. The valve is mounted on a movable base with a peddle and a spring to pull it back to closed. Total cost less than $25.00 and I can move it anywhere within a 15' radius. Sorry but I don't have any pictures.
  12. Have you read the attachments on the Forge Supplies page of my web-site? That should give you some good information, then you can e-mail me or call if you need more info. You can get my web-site, e-mail and phone number from my profiles page here. Wayne
  13. Charles, do you know why the Comanches liked the Appaloosa so much? They were the only horses they could run fast enough to catch, and when they got to the battle they were so ###### mad they could whip anybody.
  14. My web-site is back and running.  GoDaddy has a new version of their software and want $500.00 to rebuild it.  After I spent hours to get it set up to begin with.  I told them to go stuff it.

Thank you to all who notified me that the site was not operating.

Let me know if I can help you.

  15. It looks like a Johnson to me but what do I know?

  18. Check out the Build a Gas Forge attachment on the Forge Supplies page of my web-site. It is a "clam shell design" and is quite easy to build. This is how I like to build a tough, long lasting, efficient forge. Go to my Profiles above for my web-site and contact information. Let me know how I can help you. Wayne
  19. Jim, from what I can see from your pictures, You're shop is to clean for a blacksmith. Years ago a smith in Atlanta was hosting an Alex Bealer Blacksmith Association meeting. He always kept his shop clean with everything in it's place. The demonstrator came in and said, "This shop is to clean for me to demonstrate in." He then picked up a hand full of gravel and dirt and threw it on the floor. Everyone in attendance laughed and thought that it was very funny. That was the end of the meeting. All in attendance were immediately ordered to leave, especially the demonstrator. Let me know if I can help you. Wayne
  20. Gene, you should be able to get 20# Propane tanks for free because the ones with the old valves can't be refilled. You should be able to get a truck load of Freon bottles for free at your local HVAC company or auto repair shops that do AC work.
  21. I suggest that you read the Build a Gas Forge at the Forge Supplies page of my web-site. You can get the URL and contact information by going to my Profiles page. If you want to contact me I prefer e-mail. Let me know if I can help you. Wayne

  24. I skipped last year. I had only missed 1 year in 17. We were building our new home in Tennessee, I had a construction crew busy and my wife living in a 24' camping trailer. I had to make up my mind, which did I want worst, a trip to Quad State or a divorce. I think that I made the wise decision that year. Now, at age 75, I have decided that spending a week getting every thing loaded, driving for 7 hours so that I could unload all that I had spent a week loading, getting set up, all so that 5 days later I could load it all up again, drive 7 hours back and spend another week unloading ,,,and then spending a week resting up, it was time to quit going to conferences. Last week David Custer (Firey Furnace) came to my shop and loaded up all the stuff that I would have brought. He has my banner, so if you need any of the things that I had look for my banner or Dave's Firey Furnace banner. Oh yeah, he also has my canopy, well, now his canopy. Stop by and visit with Dave. He is a really nice guy and, especially for his age, an exceptional blacksmith. Here is the future of Blacksmithing in America! Let me know if I can help you. You can get all of my contact information on my profile. I prefer contact by e-mail. to pick me up, put me up and bring me back home, but I haven't seen him yet! I keep looking up the drive for him. Wayne
