I just smith. I the rest of my life find time to fit in somewhere between hammer blows. Smithing lets me express my creativity, is great stress relief, allows for the best alone time I can get, makes my mind work things out more than my "regular job" , and just all in all makes me feel good. When something does that for me I let everything else find it's own place in my life's schedule.

Nice anvil. I had a 165 lb. Fisher Norris Eagle anvil . Sold it and have regretted it ever since. Yeah, they do not ring. I sold mine for $400.00. Do nothing to it except USE IT. Have fun.

I have a 4 speaker stereo in my smithy. I listen to Sirius XM ....mostly the blues station while I am working .

In the Italian North end on Hanover Street some of the best Italian food this side of the Atlantic in particular La Dolce Vida restaurante . The oldest seafood establishment in Boston...The Union Oyster House. Best Irish Pub...The Black Rose. Fenway Park for a Boston Red Sox game and after the game go to the Cask and Flagon Pub next to Fenway Park. Travel west and in the Berkshires...... Pittsfield Ma. The Hancock Shaker Village. Very good point. I went to a party where I was to deep fry a whole turkey and had mentioned to the host that I was using peanut oil. He informed me that one of the guests had an allergy to peanuts . I then changed to corn oil. One can never be too safe when it comes to food allergies .

I just got a 5 inch leg vise in a local on line auction for $25.00...Paid $75 for the last 5 inch leg vise I got through CL.

The post vise may be a Colombian.......... the other I believe mav be a "saw set" for setting the teeth on a hand saw. Just my best guess.

How Much ?

It was reported that one of the men "shooting " the anvil had a premature ignition and was seriously injured I believe loosing one or more fingers and was life flighted to a hospital. Also it was reported that some members of the Mythbusters crew were also injured. BTW , yes it is an old tradition that goes back to I believe the Revolutionary War.Or possibly the Civil War.

Vent free propane heater to take out the chill while the Harman coal stove is getting up to temp. Plenum over the coal stove and 6 inch stove pipe across the shop ceiling with open 'T's" every few feet and cap the far end. The heat travels up the pipe and down the open T's into the shop . also a ceiling fan.

I got tired of having to replace pipe every so often so I contacted a chimney sweep who also does relining of chimneys. He told me the best pipe for what I do is made from 316L stainless. I replaced all my pipe with 10 inch 316L stainless three yrs ago and it looks as new as it did the day I installed it . costly though . four - four sections cost me $500.00 but it looks to be paying for itself in the long run. I have a coal stove in the shop for heat and will be buying 6 inch 316L for that also as I plan to be smithing until the day I can no longer pick up a hammer. Mark A.K.A. Harley

Hello Charlie, My name is Mark Suchocki and I live in the town of Royalston, Mass. which is on the NH. border south of Keene NH. I have been smithing since 1999. You are welcome to come visit and join in the forging. I have one or two friends who come by on Friday evenings from 6:00PM until we get tired. Lately that has been about 10:00PM. My smithy is set up for two smiths to work the coal forge at the same time with anvils set up on either side.
