charliecummings Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Hello all! Just wanted to drop in and introduce myself. I'm a 36 year old elementary school teacher who took a blacksmithing class at the Salem Art works, Salem NY last summer and was HOOKED! I've spent the last year scrounging tools and equipment and building a barn for the forge. (Though I sold the idea to my wife as a place to store the garden equipment). I have a nice little coal forge (questions about that to be posted in another place), and old Fisher Anvil that quite literally dropped into my hands, and a few various other essentials. While I've not played with a gas forge yet, the Coal seems to be a very enjoyable method for me so far. As a pretty typical newcomer, I'm big on enthusiasm and short on skills; but, its all about the journey right!?! I'd love to find some other smiths to chat with in the upstate NY, Vermont, and northern Mass areas. Since I'm a teacher, I'm off all summer and happy to road trip! Anyway, hello to all, and I'm looking forward to joining in this amazing online community!! Charlie Cummings Quote
Marksnagel Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Hey Charlie, welcome to IFI. This is a great place to learn and meet other smiths that are more than willing to teach. It sounds like you are on your way to a great start. I also use coal and love it. Remember that safety is the most important thing to learn. Look over the safety topic forum. There are a lot of great things to learn there. Enjoy your summer, look forward to seeing what you make. Mark <º)))>< Quote
Harley Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Hello Charlie, My name is Mark Suchocki and I live in the town of Royalston, Mass. which is on the NH. border south of Keene NH. I have been smithing since 1999. You are welcome to come visit and join in the forging. I have one or two friends who come by on Friday evenings from 6:00PM until we get tired. Lately that has been about 10:00PM. My smithy is set up for two smiths to work the coal forge at the same time with anvils set up on either side. There is a gas forge and also I have a portable coal forge that can be set up if needed outside the door of the shop. You may check out my shop and examples of my work at www.blackdogforge.net. You may call me at 978-249-6404 with any questions you may have. I usually work in the smithy Friday night, Sat., and Sunday. If interested in joining us call or email me [email protected] for directions and details on what to bring for safety gear. Hope you are able to join us, Mark Suchocki Black Dog Forge Quote
