Ventilation fan for new coal forge?
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to James Drescher's topic in Bellows, Blowers
When I first built my forge I used a Dayton blower motor. It worked great and had an air gate to control air flow. I switched to a hand crank blower because it gave me greater control and used less coal. http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/hvac/blowers/draft-inducer/shaded-pole-blower-1-25-hp-60-cfm?infoParam.campaignId=T9F&gclid=CJLfkrnv99MCFQkpaQodnR8HFg -

We have been to the Ketter Center many times. It's my understanding all of the work is provided by the student's. The College of the Ozarks teaches craft's and the student's work their way through for the tuition. They provide some culinary delights all made by students. https://www.google.com/maps/uv?hl=en&pb=!1s0x87cf0322642c136d%3A0xeab062f178b9c73f!2m19!2m2!1i80!2i80!3m1!2i20!16m13!1b1!2m2!1m1!1e1!2m2!1m1!1e3!2m2!1m1!1e5!2m2!1m1!1e4!3m1!7e115!4shttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.iceportal.com%2Fbrochures%2Fice%2Fbrochure.aspx%3Fdid%3D2813%26brochureid%3D28044%26type%3Dpic!5skeeter center college of the ozarks - Google Search&imagekey=!1e1!2shttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.cfmedia.vfmleonardo.com%2FimageRepo%2F2%2F0%2F47%2F300%2F177%2FLobby_Photo_1_Email_S.jpg&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwixyPTk6vfTAhXoFJoKHWiUAMoQoioInAEwCg -

Never had a cover for my slack tub. Might be a good idea if nothing more than to keep the mice from drowning in it. -
400 lb Vulcan
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to Benjaman's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
OK, so the line that runs the full length of the face is a fake thickness line. Never heard of that. Still a good quiet anvil and I'm happy with it. Been hammering hot metal for over 20 years on it without any more damage. -

I was going by the bottom of the chip. The line I see is at the 1 inch line. A couple of other pictures, the only marks I find are the logo and number 10 and 43 on the other side. -

That vise is a great find. Another followed me home. While at our BOA meeting a member gifted this sink to my wife for a slack tub. Building a stand for it. -

I'll try that in the daylight, right by a place where a prior owner had ground a weird radius into the edge (probably trying to fix a chip). -

The tool steel face of my 110 lb Vulcan is not paper thin. I just measured it at 3/4 inch. -
Sisco Anvil identification

I would rent a trailer or truck to transport that anvil, if it was too heavy/large to fit into the Fiesta. -
My comment would be, move that propane bottle and maybe cut a larger opening for your stock. Can't tell if there is an exhaust opening in the other end but it needs one.

You might benefit from this forum about traditional muzzleloading, Especially the gun builders sub-forum a lot of knowable folks there who are willing to share their knowledge. If the link doesn't work it's www dot muzzleloadingforum dot com http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/fusionbb.php -
Not all knowledge comes from college. Something my grandfather told me in the early '60s which still applies today.

Source for quality flap disks
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to Farmall's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
I once bought some expensive flap disk's and found in the fine print "made in China" so now I just get mine from HF and get just as much mileage from them. -

Our shop started out life as a "bunny barn". At the time we were raising fancy show rabbits, but it became a chore so the bunnies had to go and the 10' X 30' was converted into the shop.

Don't know about that. Without the blacksmith, the stone cutters would not have the tools to cut the stones. -

Just thinking out loud here but wonder if for some reason the factory failed to weld the steel plate on it. Something like when most steel was going to the war time effort in WWII.- 46 replies

I thought she was wearing the sweater so whoever was wearing those house slippers wouldn't feel bad. -
When my grandfather passed away, I wound up with all his tools and used them all the time even though they were "old". Then one day some miscreant broke into my van and stole all of them except for his 2lb cross peen hammer, which I still have and use. Another 60 years of use and the handle gave up last month. I re-handled it but it just doesn't feel the same. Every time I used that hammer, I felt connected to my grandfather and his wisdom and knowledge.

Setup help & introduction
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to JamesSr's topic in Tools, general discussion
Good score on your first anvil. Quite an ingenious anvil stand, I love it however you will find it gives some when forging steel. I would suggest making a stand that is more solid, a tree stump or 4x4's banded together. Another suggestion for searching the forum is use google with a search like this ("iforgeiron" anvil stands) without the brackets, the search function of the forum leaves a lot to be desired.
