I'm forging my first hammer! It's been a ton of fun so far. I started with 3 inch 4140 round, cut a disc off and shaped the billet first. I punched the hole accurately (or so i thought!) and once i drifted it, I saw it wiggled a bit off center. I got some help trying to correct it by drifting to round then oval again, but it didn't really work sadly. I forged in the fullers and then forged the faces, round side into octagon and the flat side I hit the corners to octagon on the rounding side, but on the flat side i just smashed the corners in a bit. i've rough ground it and heat treated it, and

Hey guys, beginner blacksmith here. I want to purchase a Brian Brazeal style rounding hammer, like the one Alec Steele uses but I don't know how heavy it should be. I plan on forging candleholders, leaves, bottlecap openers and other smaller projects. If things go well I might eventually try to forge knives. How heavy do you recommend that the hammer should be? 1 kg? 1,5 kg? If you know any good ones, please link me to them (if they ship to Europe, I live in Sweden). Grateful for all the help I can get. Sincerely, Eophex

Happened to see this hammer at Tractor Supply yesterday and I thought it looked like it could make a decent rounding hammer. It has a flat side and a rounded side. The rounded side looks like it has too sharp of a radius, but that could probably be fixed with a grinder. I'm not crazy about the fiberglass handle, but that could also be replaced. The head looks to be of good quality, yet the hammer is really cheap ($18.99) Anyone have any thoughts? Mod note: Link removed

I just got a Brian Brazeal forged to finish 3 1/2 lb rounding hammer in the mail yesterday when I got home. It was late so I'll try it out tonight. These are great hammers. I had the pleasure of striking for the same type hammer (about a pound less) at Brian's last March for a three day class. Wish that I had more time to spend there. I would encourage anyone looking to further their blacksmith skills to take a class with Brian. His level of knowledge is outstanding as well as his ability to convey that information. Brian and Karen are great hosts and Karen is an awesome cook. You won't be dis

I have been looking for a reasonably priced rounding hammer, I am new to blacksmithing and can't yet justify spending hundreds of dollars on a hammer, and I ran across Nordic Forge hammers. They seem to be of decent quality from what I can tell and after contacting them they have told me they think it will work for my applications. They have a website that is only semi functional but they were very prompt in answering my email and questions about their hammers. There are two models one is hand turned and finished the other is heat treated then machine turned and finished,

Hello I would like to share some pictures of the work Irish, 5starhobo and myself did over the last few weeks. A 3.5lb rounding hammer 5starhobo and Irish forged for Irish out of 2inch by 4 1/2inch 1045. Two bottom swages I directed Some other small forgings 5star and I did one day, from left to right a small english pattern hammer, small set hammer, prototype ball peen hammer, an adjusted top swage and an unfinished flatter.

As a beginner I am still building up my collection of hammers. I have a few cross/ball pein hammers but I keep seeing a rounding hammer as the choice for a lot of blacksmiths. Can anyone provide more detail on the advantage of the rounding hammer and its uses? What hammer would you recommend?

Hey fellows! Last weekend I visited Joe to pick up a new military style portable forge I bought from him. We took this occasion to also work together for one day. Matt charged us to forge a rounding hammer for him and that fit very well because Joe wanted me to show him how to forge one anyway. I myself was taught by Alec how to forge them and he learned it from Brian... so it was basically forged with the techniques Brian Brazeal teaches at the moment. The hammer was forged out of 40mm car axle steel, the billet was 8cm long. After grinding it weighs 790g (1,75lbs) and is now ready for
