December 3, 201312 yr Greetings All, A person who is only shiny on the outside is much smaller than a person who is shiny on the inside.. A sculpture to live by.. I made this and others a few years ago and it still stands true... Forge on and make beautiful things Jim
December 4, 201312 yr This is probably the only hobby where it is perfectly acceptable to beat on an antique with a large hammer... My anvil is probably an early 1800's-ish one, and looks every year of it.
December 4, 201312 yr The difference between a "master" and a beginner. A "master" has made more mistakes than a "beginner" as dreamt of trying. Frosty The Lucky.
December 4, 201312 yr "Five minutes at the anvil saves an hour at the bench." Donald Streeter "Forge to shape; file to fit." old saying "He's making up in shine what he lacks in ability." These latter two may seem antithetical, but the second one means that there is WAY TOO MUCH grinding, sanding, filing on a crudely forged lump.
December 4, 201312 yr I dont think I will ever forget one of the first things Frank Turley said when I attended one of his short classes. "So, you want to be a blacksmith, and wear a size 50 shirt and peer thru a keyhole with both eyes at the same time"! BTW Frank, thanks a million for the time you spent with us. I have benefited from it greatly, and have worn out the notes I took as well. Vince Smith San Jon, NM
December 4, 201312 yr "He's making up in shine what he lacks in ability." or "Highly polished and deeply scratched" and have we had "All the gear, no idea."
December 6, 201312 yr Author From the chat When I worked in a machine shop, I learned to never where your work shoes home
December 7, 201312 yr You can tell the quality of a blacksmith by the quality of his scrap pile. If its yellow its mellow If its red its dead
December 7, 201312 yr "If Daniel Boon would've had it he'd have used it!" my first blacksmith teacher John (grape day park)
December 8, 201312 yr Author From the forum "success is the ability to go from failure to failure, with no loss of enthusiasm" (Churchill), Sounds like a session at the forge sometimes.
December 9, 201312 yr "20 plus years, and I still have a lot to learn." from Steve Sells..... I resemble that remark....... 20 years full time from next June and as much is ahead as behind me (I hope!!)

December 9, 201312 yr "20 plus years, and I still have a lot to learn." from Steve Sells..... I resemble that remark....... 20 years full time from next June and as much is ahead as behind me (I hope!!) Me too except I'm another 35 years on from you youngsters, and there's even more to learn, barely scratched the surface yet. Good fun though !!
December 10, 201312 yr Reference to post 19 and 20. That's funny I've never seen that before however I am always telling people especially if children are present; everything at the back of my truck IS hot, heavy, hard, or sharp!
December 11, 201312 yr Author Anything that costs less than $20 and looks good in a double wide trailer home will sell. Bill Epps A fast 10 will outrun a slow 20 any day. Bill Epps
December 11, 201312 yr NobodySpecial reminded me of this when he said 'Don't [tick] off the person who can [fix something]' I think its supposed to be a 'Confucius say' line: "Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it." I see that kind of attitude from people who are JUST starting to smith and insist that some things are impossible while watching the instructor do them :)
