  1. I love the drop bin. It's where I get most of my steel actually. There's a problem with scraptors stealing everything so I don't keep much on hand. Unfortunately no one has ordered any high carbon in a long time and they won't order it unless it's for a commercial order so I only have mystery hardenable steel at the moment. Iirc they charge between forty and seventy cents a pound. I'm going to have to make a trip soon. Pnut
  2. I believe it says The Columbian hardware co. Cleveland Ohio Pnut
  3. I found a video of an Indian woman swinging a sledge and she could out work most men I've seen. I'll post the link in a moment. Pnut
  4. One of the handiest tricks I've learned since joining. Thanks Thomas, it worked wonders on a hammer that got just a little loose. I now do it yearly in a big pan after wiping down all the handles. It's become a part of my yearly maintenance. Pnut
  5. P38 on my keychain at all times. I don't have the data to load the video but you can open a can just by vigorously rubbing the lid across a rough surface. Is that what is in the video? My curiosity is killing me. Pnut
  6. Have you had a chance to read his book? I highly recommend it. Pnut
  7. You could heat it in the forge like said above and just quench the ends and leave it hot where you want the bend. It would probably be easier than taking the burners off. They might not burn the same outside of the forge as they do in it. Pnut
  8. Belated welcome aboard. I too have PTSD and if you've not given ECD therapy a go you might find some relief. It's the only thing that helped me manage the hyper vigilance issues etc. A lot of people say they get into smithing to get the aggression out. I do it to get the serenity in. Pnut
  9. The LA opera house had to be sandblasted because it was melting paper boxes and peeling paint on cars. It was also a traffic hazard because of the glare Pnut
  10. You'll be missed but you'll live on in the knowledge you shared. https://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/local_news/blacksmith-brought-harmonious-motion-to-metal-dance/article_8d9e6152-2824-11eb-9fb2-afcaa8bd6d22.html
  11. Check with the Cincinnati blacksmiths guild. They regularly meet at Blue Hell Studio or did. Can't say for sure now but CBG is the local ABANA affiliate. I'm just outside of Florence KY about thirty minutes from Cincinnati. The other option is Cumberland Elkhorn coal and coke in Louisville. Pnut
  12. I made a sound suppressor for a firearm back in about 1990 in eighth grade shop class and got an A. I know you couldn't do that anymore. I used to make water pipes in art class too. No one ever batted an eye. Those days are long gone. I think they'd expel you for either nowadays. Pnut
  13. Too right Frosty. At the rubber refinery it seemed like all the old fellas were missing at least one knuckle. One thing too often overlooked is that familiarity breeds complacency with some people. Pnut
  14. Familiarity maybe. If you know something works it's easy to just stay on that road. Pnut
  15. Some MRE's are pretty good. Mainly the vegetarian ones believe it or not but the beef stew was the same as dinty moore. We had most of a truck load confiscated from my family's surplus store outside of FT. Campbell. Turns out they were stolen. They throw them away after coming back from the field but it's still a no no. Pnut
  16. It's definitely coming along. I'm looking forward to seeing you finish it. Nothing like getting to see someone accomplish a goal to motivate me to perform a posteriectomy¹ on my recliner. Pnut ¹surgically removing a posterior from it's resting place.
  17. This is exactly the way I feel. Too much fiddly work but on occasion I do find hand filing meditative. Just not six hours worth of it ;-) Pnut
  18. Also before you apply the refractory make sure you butter (spritz with water) the wool or it will flash dry. I don't know if anyone mentioned it specifically or not. Pnut
  19. I had to help pull a lady's ponytail out of some wheels on a stacker at the printing company I worked at. It pulled a little skin off with it. I have hair down to the small of my back and it's always in a ponytail under a hat around spinning machinery. Pnut
  20. I received a YouTube notification when you post a new one but the WiFi at my house is slow and videos eat up data fast so I usually wait till I go to my place of employment where the WiFi is fast enough that I don't go crazy watching it buffer. Pnut
  21. I use a ball valve on the AC mattress pump that was my air supply before I got an actual blower. There's also a picture somewhere on the forum of a waste gate made from conduit parts but I don't remember where. If I locate it I will let you know. Also you may want to bring the brick that is lying across the bottom bricks of your fire pot level with top of the box. Pnut
  22. Watched the first one yesterday. Thanks for getting this one up so quickly. Pnut
  23. TSC is five minutes away. I'm more concerned with freeze up. I went and looked at their tanks today. Forty pound tank filled costs $121USD. I'll definitely be going with that one versus the thirty pound tank. It's only ten dollars more for the forty pound tank empty than the thirty so it doesn't make sense to not spend the extra ten bucks for the larger. They have a hundred pound tank too but I don't think the landlord would go for it. I haven't mentioned it to her yet. Pnut
