  1. Wels catfish are pretty huge too. They're also ambush predators that feed along riverbanks. Pnut
  2. The plistix dried in my forge within twelve hours then I gave it another coat and waited 24 hrs just to be sure. Pnut
  3. I meant drifting. I need to stop typing while occupied with other things. Pnut
  4. The helium tank doesn't need anything to reduce the volume inside it like some of the plans for box type super suckers does it? Pnut
  5. Very cool site. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. There's a few live feeds from satellites I check out frequently. Pnut
  6. Every machine is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough. -Unknown . Pnut
  7. Yeah, I meant for a new cylinder plus the cost of filling it. According to the receipt the 40Lb cylinder was $89.99 plus $28.43 to fill it at $3.09 per gallon. Pnut
  8. Those ez tongs look a little weird but they really do work. I haven't tried making knife tongs out of them but I'm sure you could shape the bits to fit the tang pretty easily. Pnut
  9. What a difference a month and a half makes. I paid over three bucks a gallon yesterday at TSC. Pnut
  10. Better start construction on my Faraday cage. Hahahaha. Pnut
  11. Too much air will definitely cool a fire. It's been over a year since I've burned anything other than charcoal in my jabod so I kinda forgot that it's heavy enough that it won't get blown out of the firepot if the air going to it is harder than a light breeze. :-) Pnut
  12. Glad you had the ah-ha moment. I do love that moment of epiphany when the last piece slides into place. Keep us posted. Pnut
  13. A 3/4 sch 40 pipe might work better. I was using a one inch pipe in the first iteration of my jabod and had the same problem. That's a lot of room under the tuyere also. I have my tuyere about an inch above the floor of the trench and sitting on the bottom of the brick firepot in the MARKIII type I use now. Charles might be along with some advice soon too. Pnut
  14. I was wondering the same thing about coking. I've never burned any but I thought they may have enough oil or sugar content to coke similar to corn. I'm hesitant to bother the guy too much about it as he's a notorious grouch in the area where I live. People seem surprised he even entertained the idea much less agreed to give them to me. The problem is it's an all or nothing deal. Take all of them or take none of them. Pnut
  15. Mark Aspery has a good video titled "scarf theory' you might want to check out. You may have already viewed it as your first illustration looks like the ones used in the tutorial. Here's a link to save you the time having to search for it. https://www.youtube.com/embed/ucfZIjAdXwM?autoplay=1&FORM=VIRE2&PC=OPALAND Pnut
  16. I think I might be able to get a pretty good amount of hickory nut hulls and was wondering if anyone has any experience with making charcoal from them. They are very woody, just about the right size and may be good fuel. I was just wondering if anyone has first hand knowledge. Pnut
  17. You can find lignite washed out of hillsides here in Ky pretty easily. I've heard it called cannal coal, sub bituminous, shale coal, and oil coal also. Whether those are technically correct terms I don't know. Back in the glory days of coal mining here in KY it was considered overburden. I think as profit margins have gotten smaller they no longer think of it as waste. Pnut
  18. The name of your town blacksmithing. As an example I would use Dry Ridge Blacksmithing or possibly Dry Ridge Blacksmith Shop or Dry Ridge Blacksmith Co. It's transferable and there's no confusing What you do there. Pnut
  19. I use a stack of cinderblock with firebrick on top. It's easily stackable when I'm finished so it doesn't take up much room. I just stack them against the shed wall one block thick. Pnut
  20. I would try cutting test coupons from each and doing progressively faster quenches and then checking with a file for hardness and doing a break test. Spark testing is something that takes time to really get good at in my opinion. Too many variables like what the grinding wheel is made from etc. Pnut
  21. Doesn't excess phosphorus cause wrought iron to be cold short? Pnut
  22. Good work. On the next one you make you might want to make the ring with a recurve. I bend them the opposite way the scroll will go so they're centered over the shaft of the tool when the scroll is finished. That's just what I find pleasing. You may differ. Keep it up. Pnut
  23. If you plan on punching hammer eyes on it a pritchel would come in handy. The Goshen historical blacksmithing school page on facebook has been making a bunch of striking anvils. You can check out what they're doing. Pnut
  24. Dr. Jim Hrouslas also has authored a couple books and is a member here. His screen name is JPH iirc. He creates some beautiful swords. Pnut
  25. Kinda the same thing as, "The cobbler's children are always barefoot." Pnut
