Second, pure propane can't burn without combustion air or O2. the purpose of the burner tube is to mix the two so it burns properly. Hi winton, Welcome to Iforgeiron. I would like to add that the flighting does not need to be welded, in one solid bead. In other words make skip welds about 2 to 3 inches long on one side of the flighting material. Then weld the same way on the opposite side of the flighting this time place you welds between the welds on the back side of the flighting. Do the same with 1/4" material you intend to use on the outside edge. A friend and I recently replace the flighting on huge corn head that fits on a combine. We just worked it alittle bit at a time from the ends of the auger. Because the inner tube of the auger was such thin material we use a wire feed welder. BTW the new flighting didn't follow where the old flighting was but it works just fine. Hope this helps, BE safe Larry

You may also be trying to run on the start winding this will make a motor smoke right off. There's two sets of winding in the motor to start, and run winding. Like Irnsrgn, said check with a appliance repair man. Good Luck Larry

Hey Sam, Just burn a hole in the side of the anvil post, near the top. Then pour sand, lead what ever in, then tack weld a patch over the hole to seal it. Don't have too much fun, Larry

When I make pulleys I use a cut off tool to cut the center groove to depth. Set the tool to cut the angle on one side. Reset tool for the other side cut that angle. Just another way to do it. Keep on turning:) LarryM

Kevin, A pair of heart shaped wall sconces, (candle holders) will make a big splash with the women. Just couple pieces of strap iron slit at the top shaped into heart scroll the bottom end to mount pipe candle cups. Lots of good ideas in the gallery, and blueprint sections. Merry Christmas!!! OK, guys we need more knee mail. I live about a hour and a half drive from these people the latest report dosn't look good the camera that was lowered today did not find them. The air dosn't have enough O2 to sustain life. But there is still HOPE!!. One pic on the internet showes picture of ventilating fan, (which I used to build) shut down. BTW that is one of my fans. There is not enough incomeing air to operate it. This really upset me to see this. Thanks Larry

cheftjcook, I also have this book bought it about 1980. Yes I agree It is very good book. I would like to also add that there is a good beginner's BBQ forge built with hair dryer as a blower. The hardware and tongs chapter sure helped when I first started blacksmithing. Great book guys look for it at your local library. Keep Hammerin':D Larry

Mike, Beautiful Ulu, I havn't seen one since I left Alaska. If you want to see something amazing. Just watch eskimo person prepare salmon to be dried with one of those things. They can clean and cut up a large salmon quicker than I was able think about it. Thanks for sharing Larry

Here's another idea. Think square tube instead of round tubing. My welded firepot is plumbed to the blower with square tubing salvaged from an old basketball hoop stand. To make a tee fitting without welding can be done. You need to have a hand drill. Just drill a series of holes in side of upright tube, in shape of a square hole. then break out the center of the hole. Drill some holes to bolt the horizonal piece to vertical piece. Add a couple of straps bolted to side of both pieces to hold everything in place. Check blueprint section under coal forges also. Lots good info on building inexpensive coal forges. I like the 55 gallon barrel forge

O.K. I'll take a crack at it. If you could heat the impeller and pulley and remove them. You could buy hardware store pillow block bearing. Either bushings or ball bearing. Make new shaft out of a piece of cold rolled shafting. You might have shim under pillow blocks to center the shaft in the housing. As far as the grinder belt drive it sound like good idea to me. Hope this gives you some ideas. Larry

Jr. is exactlly right on the belts. One other point I would like to add is that when a v belt is bent over a pulley the center of the taper sides of the belt, has a tendency to bulge outward to grip the pulley better. If you picture what happen when you bend a piece of tubing, or hose it flattens out and becomes wider. The old wide B belts would become twisted and roll over in the pulley. That's why we started using narrower belts on machine as well as vehicles. When a heavy load is on the belt we use many small belts to do the work of one. Happy Hammering Larry

I'm with pault17. 4 1/2 grinder will do alot of cutting. The inverters that for sale at auto parts or department stores work very well. They are easy to use just plug them into cigerette lighter socket. If you use a pickup to haul you can also build two hook like frames to hang in bed stack pockets. And haul longer length of material. Be Safe. LarryM

Hoary, Check out this idea for a firepot. It's welded firepot, that I made for myself. One thing that I changed was to use 3" square tube instead of pipe. Fabricated Fire Pot by Bob Patrick Also look at irnsrgn's post on clay and horse manure lining. Be Safe!! Larry

Christopher, Nice looking unit. One thing you can do is cure the clay while it is damp. By building fire. First do yourself a favor, take a length of wire, and push it into clay all over to vent the steam generated. Happy Hammerin' Larry

Just thought I add my two cents. First of a swing type mobil chair needs to have a place for the smith's feet to rest. Or be low enough so their feet could to touch the floor. A power chair would be better. You need to build everything lower. But remember that there cannot be any cross rails under benchs so chair will be able to go under it. Same with forge and anvil. The anvil stand should be built so that a least the front part of the chair will go under it. LarryM

Dan, You might want to try making a few out of old files first just to get the hang of it. I have bought them in second hand stores for $.50 a piece. I made wood turning chisels and scrapers from. Just a thought. LarryM
