Does belt thickness affect speed? How about width? Will I lose much with a 1 1/2" belt on a 2" pulley? Enquiring mind and all.

I have an old Browne and Sharp(I think) surface grinder that had a motor added to the back to run it. I checked the original motor and it still works. I reckon the belt broke and they just added the other motor rather than go thru the aggravation of making a new belt. My question is, should I go with a leather belt or a composite? Thanks bruce

Distance between 18" pulley and 3" drive pulley will be 36" - 48". Final speed will be 300+-rpm I want to use an idler pulley to act as a "clutch". Do I put the idler pulley on the driven side of the belt or on the slack side of the belt? Should the idler be in the center or near the 18" or 4" pulley. Thanks, Keith..

Hi Friends, I'm a bit over my head on this one (what else is new). The manager of the condo complex we presently rent at has offered me the 11 story building's old generator simply for disconnecting it and hauling it out. It's connected to a bunch of electrical boxes with relays, humming coils and breaker switches. It hasn't been used for years. I just got a quick look at it in the near dark basement. All I could read was Lister Diesel on two lids next to the fuel tank. The exhaust is piped out, no fuel piped in. Heck of a generator. Sure wish I still had my farm. I'm going to scramble to see if I can find someone or place to stash it. Not sure how to go about moving th…

Any advise for helping a shop air compressor start on cold days ? I run 30 W compressor duty oil in the crankcase and change it about every 6 months. Should I switch to a multigrade like 10-30 W motor oil ? Is that a bad idea for this application ? I think the compressor duty oil has an anti foaming agent. The compressor in question is a 60's vintage Worthington 2 stage with a 3 hp. 1725 rpm 220 V motor on it. I think it was originally equipped with a 5 hp. motor but the 3 hp. gives me enough air power for my needs. The slower RPM keeps the noise level down. Would a bigger motor help on cold starts ? or make it worse ? The compressor is on a dedicated 30 amp 2…

I have a Central Machinery table top drill press and the switch died a few days back. I decided I could use a house hold type light switch to replace it. What i have rigged now turns the motor on when i plug it in, but I when i turn off the switch I also turn off the breaker! I'm not too electrically inclined, will this type switch work? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Russell

I posted this on another site this morning.It works well and thought I'd share it instead of lurking and not giving back. That's piece of 5/8 stainless bent cold.1" post with a 2" bearing,6X8X4 block,10 X12 3/8 base plate,1X2X6 arm welded to a 1" handle about 12" long,2 3/8" X 7" post welded to block with an angle iron clip to keep everything rigid.I put a 4' handle on and bent some 2X1/4 flat cold.Just thought I'd share this with you folks.

Hey everyone, Looking for some input on flat belts and lacing. After pricing out leather belts from McMaster Carr, I am thinking that it will be less expensive to go to Tandy and just buy a whole side of leather and cut my own belts. I have access to a leather belt/lacing cutter so I should be able to cut nice even belts. Anyone ever cut their own or have any thoughts on the matter? The second thought is lacing. Given that the drill press these belts are for (see bellow) requires two belts per spindle plus one belt to drive the main shaft (yep. one machine, seven belts!) it will obviously be worthwhile for me to be able to make and lace the belts myself. Hey guys, I know there has been some talk here and there in the machinists forum about metal shapers and there usefulness in a blacksmith shop. I happened across this one on the 'Bay and figured I'd toss it up here as nobody has bid on it as of this posting. It looks like a decent deal at the price even if it does need some TLC. Re: my post below, about Greenerd arbor press, Leland-Gifford drill press and Sawmore built by Rasmussen of Racine. I got Seafoam Green for the Leland-Gifford from the lower related post, but does anybody have the original colors for the Greenerd or Rasmussen saw? I am interested in constructing a small table using 4 standard hand pump jacks as the legs only I want to connect them all together so that they all work off of only one hand pump. Any ideas of how or if I can do this? Thanks, IAF

I have an odd question. Big laser cut rigs that are used for cutting plate etc. I'm wondering if there is a way to set the "depth" of the cut. For instance..can you cut one side out of a chunk of pipe. or(as is my intrest) cut one side of a coil of wire to get very clean cut rings. I suppose I could ask the same question about water jet cutters.

Have just recently purchased this pullmax nibbler/punch at a most reasonable price. The problem is however, I have no idea how it works or how one actually uses it or what are its full range of applications. The internet research I have done has not been that fruitful, but I am sure that someone on this forum will point me in the right direction. It is a Pullmax P2/5 and from what I have read is a most desirable machine to have. Hi. Just thought I'd share an interesting experience I had with a Dremel carbide end mill. I have a touchmark that I wanted to "touch" up, and it is good and hard. So, I wondered if a Dremel moto-tool with a small carbide end mill would work. Information on the web is pretty spotty on these things, and I don't know anybody who has much experience with this technique. Since we are bending here is my Scroller and it is motorized with a 60:1 gearbox and a 3/4 hp motor 1,000+ inch pounds of torque. I can scroll 1,000 pcs of 3/16"x1" metal in a day with no effort or strain on my body like bending them by hand...Bob

A drill chuck decides to drop off it's taper in the middle of a run... and you have your back turned. Luckily, I'm just making a bunch of parts out of G-10. (fibreglass, essentially) The next tool, which was a carbide centerdrill, hit the chuck off-center, driving it the rest of the way through the part, before pushing it out of the way. A strange occurance, so I thought I'd grab a picture. :D

Got my toy truck back, its been at the mechanic shop since 2000 to have brakes fixed. I guess I am not high priority. It was a 1953 M37 Cargo truck when I got it out of a salvage yard, didn't run just got the cab and chassis. I always wanted a winch truck that could navigate in the mud to retrieve stuck farm machinery and dozers. I spent a lot of time and money in building it up to what I wanted, never did get it painted tho, doesn't seem to affect its ability to work tho. 3 winches, Main winch 40K tulsa, boom winch 15K with a 4 part line to poles, 20K tulsa for an auxiliary. PTO is transfer case powered, with 5 sp tranny for fwd and reverse and speeds. Each winch …

For the last year or so, since my wife gave me a small 10-inch bench-mount drill press, I have been burning the drill bits up like no ones business. After searching the forums here recently, and having seen various comments made (not on the subject of burning drill bits, but of just drilling holes) I realized that drilling dry is no way to go:o you don't need oil when drilling wood! I recently picked up some real "cutting oil" and a little squeeze pump oil can, and WOW!! what a difference. drilling metal is now a whole lot more fun. Thanks for leaning me a new lesson... Now I just have to pick up some new bits of all sizes..
