Machinery General Discussions

  1. Started by 11echo,

I have just picked up a small knee mill and am now in the process of rebuilding it. One problem I've now run across is the one of the threaded table shafts is bent. It's a semi long shaft (30"), threaded and has a number of different diameters on it. The end portion where the hand crank is, is 1/2" in diameter x 7" long, unthreaded and this is the area where it

  2. I picked this up the other day, and have no idea what it is. It looks like something for use with a piece of machinery, but my knowledge on machines is limited. The top section is shaped like a 'C' and will swing either way by adjusting the stops on the side, and swinging the little handle on the front. The clamp part has a brass end on screw part. It is heavy, about 18" long and weighs several pounds. The only marking I could find is "KG22" imprinted under the swing handle. It also can be adjusted for position as there is set screws and a dovetail between the top part and the clamp part. Anyone have any clue? Thanks.

With a lathe and a mill you can make your own accesories. I started with a pair of large Angle Blocks that were a gift and drilled and tapped them for easier set up. photo 1 Then I needed an Indexer. photo 2 Then making a few extra parts, photo 3 I had a dividing head.

Has anyone here ever made their own "ring roller"? The ones I've seen on the 'net have a big handwheel and three rolls that are adjustable so different radii can be bent. This is all mounted to a piece of square tubing that is bolted to the floor. I'd like a set of plans if anyone knows where I can borrow or buy them.

A friend of mine came home with these. Are they tinners tools?

Howdy, I recently stumbled across some plans for building a 2x72 inch belt grinder. Basically a KMG clone. The material list for the machine specifies cold roll material. It is decidedly easier for me to find scrap hot roll. Will using hot roll instead of cold roll really make a difference? I did some initial research, and it kind of seems like I should be fine with hot roll, but I thought I would ask. I know cold roll should be a little harder, or more rigid, but will it make that much of difference? I thought another reason they say cold roll might just be the appearance.. Thanks!

Stupid question I know, but after looking at another post here, I thought I'd try to drag out a few more of you. How many other blacksmiths out there are machinists as well? Most of the sources that I know say that blacksmiths of the past were quite often at least familiar enough with a metal lathe to make the things that needed to be machined for repairs to both his and others tools. However I find that not one in ten of the actual blacksmiths I know in this day and age actually run or own a lathe. I see some of you do have machines already, but wondered what kinds/ types you might have. Frog Valley has a complete older machine shop with a benchtop Atlas Lathe wi…

  17. I may be able to get an old Ridged threading machine that we have replaced. Am wondering what the max would be for twisting steel. It has the automatic jaws which quick holding pipe so it was replaced with a new machine with the manual clamp jaws. I'm thinking I can make an adapter to hold different size sq. stock and then possible make the twists cold, depending on the size of course. Any ideas as to what size I will be able to twist cold? Am I CRAZY or is this a workable idea? Thanks for your thoughts and ideas.
